Overview

The AXIAL 1/24 SCX24 Deadbolt 4WD Rock Crawler RTR is the first Axial off-roader to be released in 1/24 scale, marking an exciting new chapter in compact RC crawling. At less than 8 inches long, this ready to run RC car is the perfect rig to take along on your hiking, camping, and other outdoor and indoor adventures. Whether you are exploring mountain trails, rocky terrain, or simply enjoying weekend bashing in your garden, the Deadbolt offers factory-assembled ease, authentic scale looks, and confident handling on virtually any surface. This is not just a toy — it is a serious rock crawler in miniature form that delivers genuine Axial performance characteristics in a portable package.

Even new modellers driving the SCX24 chassis will be well-equipped to tackle tough climbs and rough trails thanks to its robust steel construction and proven suspension geometry. Like the larger SCX10 II chassis that has become legendary in the RC community, this smaller version uses plenty of steel components throughout — from the C-channel frame rails to the front and rear axles and dogbones. This means you get authentic crawling performance and durability that will handle demanding terrain without flexing or breaking. The Deadbolt is the perfect ready to run RC crawler for beginners and experienced enthusiasts alike, combining ease of use with serious off-road capability.

Adding even more to its beginner appeal, the SCX24 Deadbolt comes 100% complete and ready to run straight out of the box. Everything required for immediate action is included: the assembled and finished vehicle in stunning olive green; a dedicated Axial 3-channel 2.4GHz radio system with servo and ESC/receiver unit; the proven Dynamite 88T brushed electric motor and 350mAh 2S 7.4V LiPo battery; USB LiPo charger; and even four AA cells for the transmitter. This level of completeness means there are no hidden additional purchases required — you can start driving within minutes of opening the box.

Key Features

  • Full-Time 4WD Drivetrain — The Deadbolt features genuine full-time four-wheel drive that distributes power evenly to all four wheels, ensuring maximum traction on difficult terrain and the ability to climb obstacles that would defeat a 2WD vehicle. This makes it substantially more capable than simpler RC crawlers.
  • Steel C-Channel Chassis Frame Rails — Just like the 1/10 scale SCX10 II platform, the SCX24 features rugged and sturdy steel C-channel frame rails with additional bracing to keep everything intact and perfectly aligned even during aggressive driving. This rigid construction prevents flexing and frame twist that can damage components and reduce handling precision.
  • Worm Gear Differentials — The front and rear differentials each house a worm screw and worm gear setup that powers the axles and creates higher ground clearance for better obstacle clearance. The worm gear drive also provides a low gear ratio specifically engineered to reduce torque twist, improving climbing ability on steep slopes.
  • Durable Steel Axles and Dogbones — Steel front and rear axles, front stub axles and steel dogbones provide exceptional strength and durability to keep everything running smoothly during tough climbs and rough trails. This specification is critical for reliability when driving on rocky terrain and sharp surfaces.
  • Splined and Sleeved Drive Shafts — The front and rear drive shafts are splined and sleeved specifically to allow for maximum suspension travel while keeping constant power delivered to the wheels. This design prevents the wheels from losing traction when the suspension cycles through its full range of motion.
  • Three-Link Front and Four-Link Rear Suspension — For optimal handling and climbing ability, the SCX24 suspension features a three-link front and four-link rear setup. The four-link rear suspension geometry is specifically optimised to reduce axle steer and torque twist, which means the vehicle climbs more predictably and steers more accurately on slopes.
  • Coil-Over Shock Absorbers with Adjustable Wheelbase — The combination of coil-over shocks with simulated reservoirs and durable plastic suspension links delivers the proven Axial crawling performance you would expect from a vehicle bearing the Axial name. Extra suspension links are included for adjusting your wheelbase length to suit different terrain types.
  • Hinged Body System for Easy Access — The hinged body system offers quick and convenient access to on-board components without requiring complete disassembly. You can reach the battery and chassis by removing just two body clips and swinging the body up, making maintenance and battery changes incredibly simple.
  • Full Ball Bearings Throughout — Just because the SCX24 is smaller in size does not mean the features need to follow suit. No bushings are found in the drivetrain — instead the entire drivetrain spins freely on sealed cartridge bearings throughout the entire vehicle, ensuring smooth operation and long component life.
  • Axial AS-1 Servo with Servo Saver — Mounted just above the front axle is the Axial AS-1 steering servo fitted with a servo saver mechanism that allows for steering accuracy while also providing critical protection for the servo gears in the event of a bind or impact on obstacles.
  • Realistic Narrow-Stance Rock Crawler Body — The Deadbolt body features a narrow stance, bulging hood, realistic scale driver figure, and moulded roll cage with a realistic light bar that captures the essence of a full-size rock crawler. This level of detail brings the model to life and appeals to both collectors and active drivers.
  • Officially Licensed KMC XD229 Machete Crawl Wheels — Wrapped around the vehicle are officially licensed KMC XD Machete wheels that are legendary in the off-road world. These wheels are moulded in black and feature stunning scale details despite the small scale, giving the Deadbolt an authentic appearance that rivals much larger RC crawlers.
  • Officially Licensed Nitto Trail Grappler M/T Tyres — The officially licensed Nitto Trail Grappler M/T tyres feature an S30 compound with large block tread that offers a fantastic blend of off-road performance while still retaining excellent composure for on-road use. This makes the Deadbolt more versatile than competitors that only perform on extreme terrain.
  • Front LED Lights for Night Driving — Two bright LED lights are mounted in the front bumper for enhanced night driving visibility and authentic scale appearance. An extra LED light port on the ESC allows you to add optional LED lights for even greater night-time capability and customisation.
  • Included 3-Channel Radio System — The Axial AX-4 2.4GHz 3-channel radio system comes included with four AA transmitter batteries, meaning you can start driving immediately without purchasing additional radio equipment. The 2.4GHz frequency ensures interference-free operation in crowded driving areas.
  • Complete Dynamite 88T Brushed Motor — The included Dynamite 88T brushed electric motor provides the right amount of torque to help ascend steep climbs and negotiate rough terrain. It is mounted to a steel motor mount that keeps flex to a minimum, which helps protect the gears from damage during aggressive climbing.
  • Included LiPo Battery and USB Charger — The 350mAh 2S 7.4V LiPo battery provides excellent power delivery for the 88T motor, while the included USB LiPo charger allows you to recharge the battery conveniently from any USB power source — perfect for charging at home or in your caravan whilst travelling.

Technical Performance

The SCX24 Deadbolt achieves its impressive crawling performance through a combination of precision engineering and quality materials that Axial has refined across decades of RC vehicle development. The motor is a Dynamite 88T brushed unit — a proven design that offers optimal torque characteristics for climbing and obstacle negotiation. This motor is paired with the Axial AE-6 ESC and receiver combo, which provides reliable electronic speed control and integrated receiver functionality, simplifying the electrical architecture whilst maintaining performance. The 350mAh 2S 7.4V LiPo battery delivers ample power for extended driving sessions and is charged via a convenient USB charger, allowing you to keep driving throughout your day by rotating between multiple charged batteries. The Axial AX-4 2.4GHz 3-channel radio system provides dedicated channels for steering and throttle control with the precision needed for technical crawling. The vehicle measures 7.8 inches in length, 3.9 inches in width, and 4.73 inches in height, giving it a genuinely compact footprint that makes it ideal for indoor driving or portable outdoor adventures. Its wheelbase of 5.25 inches provides excellent stability and approach angles for climbing. The drivetrain uses worm gear differentials with 16T/4T ratios that provide the low gearing essential for technical crawling, whilst the 55T spur gear and 10T pinion combine for precise power delivery. The suspension geometry with 3-link front and 4-link rear setup ensures that all wheels maintain contact with terrain whilst climbing, and the solid axle design with two-piece moulded plastic construction provides the right balance of strength and weight. The vehicle uses a PH 2.0 connector for the battery, allowing compatibility with other 2S LiPo batteries and accessories from the broad ecosystem of 1/24 scale RC crawlers. The entire chassis is water-resistant during normal operation, though not fully waterproof, meaning you can drive through shallow water crossings but should avoid submersion. Weight is a modest 0.5 pounds, which translates to excellent manoeuvrability and the ability to be carried easily on hiking and camping trips.

It comes completely assembled and ready to run straight from the box with no additional setup required. The factory-calibrated electronics, included radio system, and intuitive controls make it easy for anyone to pick up and start driving within minutes. The low weight and compact size also make it less intimidating for new pilots compared to larger RC crawlers.
  • What battery does the SCX24 Deadbolt need? — The vehicle comes with a 350mAh 2S 7.4V LiPo battery that provides excellent performance for recreational driving. The 2S configuration means it uses two 3.7V LiPo cells in series. The battery connector type is PH 2.0, which is the standard for 1/24 scale RC crawlers, allowing you to purchase additional compatible batteries from various manufacturers including Gens Ace and other aftermarket suppliers. The included USB charger allows charging from any USB power source for convenience.
  • What is the difference between the Axial SCX24 and larger Axial crawlers like the SCX10 II? — The key difference is scale: the SCX24 is 1/24 scale whilst the SCX10 II is 1/10 scale, making the Deadbolt approximately one-quarter the size and weight. This portability advantage is substantial for those wanting to take their RC crawler on adventures. Despite the size difference, the SCX24 shares many of the same design principles as its larger sibling, including steel C-channel frame rails, worm gear differentials, and link-style suspension. However, the SCX24 uses smaller components throughout and is optimised for different terrain types — it excels on small-scale rocky outcrops and technical terrain that would be trivial for a 1/10 scale vehicle.
  • Can I upgrade components on the SCX24 Deadbolt? — Yes, Axial and third-party manufacturers including Injora offer various upgrade options for the SCX24 platform. Common upgrades include replacement shock absorbers such as the 40mm Big Bore Oil Shocks, alternative batteries for longer runtime, and various chassis and body modifications. The Deadbolt is designed with modularity in mind, making component swaps straightforward for those with basic mechanical knowledge.
  • How long will the battery last on a single charge? — Runtime depends on driving style and terrain, but the 350mAh battery typically provides between 15 to 30 minutes of active driving per charge. Enthusiasts commonly purchase additional batteries to enable longer overall driving sessions by swapping batteries between drives.
  • Is this a ready to run RC crawler? — Yes, absolutely. The Deadbolt is a complete ready to run RC crawler with absolutely nothing required to complete. It comes fully assembled with motor, servo, ESC, radio system, battery, and charger all included. You can unbox it and start driving within minutes, making it perfect for those new to RC hobbies.
  • What type of motor does the SCX24 Deadbolt have? — The SCX24 Deadbolt features a Dynamite 88T brushed electric motor, which is a 030-size motor optimised for low-speed, high-torque crawling applications. Brushed motors like this are simple, reliable, and require minimal maintenance compared to brushless alternatives, though they do generate slightly more heat during extended use.
  • What surface is the Deadbolt best suited for? — The SCX24 Deadbolt is a dedicated rock crawler that excels on rocky, mountainous, and uneven terrain including boulders, stone outcrops, and similar obstacles. The independently controlled suspension and low gearing allow it to navigate extreme terrain. However, the Nitto Trail Grappler tyres also provide decent performance on loose surfaces like sand and gravel, giving the vehicle surprising versatility beyond pure rock crawling.
