Overview

The Traxxas Differential Oil (20M weight) TRX5040 is an essential maintenance fluid for serious RC enthusiasts in the UK who demand precision performance from their remote control vehicles. This super-thick differential oil is specifically engineered to deliver consistent, reliable differential control across a wide range of Traxxas models, from entry-level runners to high-performance brushless RC trucks and monster vehicles. Whether you're a weekend basher pushing your RC car to the limit or a competitive racer fine-tuning your differential response, this 20 million weight oil provides the viscosity and performance characteristics needed to optimise your vehicle's handling and traction.

Differential oil is one of the most overlooked yet critically important fluids in any RC car setup. The differential is responsible for distributing power between the drive wheels, and the viscosity of the oil directly affects how your vehicle handles cornering, acceleration, and weight transfer. A thicker oil creates more resistance and lock-up, which can be beneficial in centre differentials on certain tracks or conditions, whilst the right weight also allows you to lock front or rear differentials when you need equal power transfer to both wheels. The Traxxas 20M weight represents the thicker end of the spectrum, making it ideal for applications where you want maximum differential engagement and control.

This is genuine Traxxas-manufactured fluid, not a cheap substitute, ensuring compatibility and performance across the entire Traxxas RC car range available to UK buyers. From the legendary X-Maxx monster truck to the Sledge belted 4WD and the modern Maxx Slash short course truck, this differential oil is the fluid trusted by Traxxas to keep your differentials operating smoothly and predictably in every condition.

Key Features

  • Super-Thick 20 Million Weight Viscosity — This is one of the thickest differential oils in the Traxxas range, providing maximum resistance and differential lock-up for centre differentials, which is the most common application for this weight oil. The consistency is described as thick putty, giving you precise control over differential engagement and slip characteristics.
  • Centre Differential Optimisation — The 20M weight is specifically formulated and most often used in centre differentials, where it provides the right balance of viscosity to manage power distribution between front and rear axles without over-stiffening the entire drivetrain.
  • Front and Rear Differential Locking Capability — Whilst designed for centre differentials, this oil can also be used to lock front or rear differentials when you need equal power transfer to both wheels on the same axle, making it versatile for different track conditions and driving styles.
  • Genuine Traxxas Manufacturing — This is authentic Traxxas fluid, not an aftermarket substitute, ensuring it meets Traxxas specifications and will perform exactly as intended in your RC vehicle's differential system.
  • Universal Compatibility Across Traxxas Range — Suitable for use in a wide range of Traxxas models including the X-Maxx Ultimate and Belted versions, XRT Ultimate and VXL-8S variants, Sledge monster truck in multiple colours, WideMaxx, and the modern Maxx Slash brushless short course truck family, as well as many other Traxxas platforms.
  • Easy Application and Adjustment — Differential oil is one of the easiest settings to adjust on any RC car, allowing you to fine-tune your vehicle's handling characteristics without tools or mechanical knowledge, making this a perfect product for both beginners and experienced racers.

Technical Performance

Differential oil thickness is measured in weight, and at 20 million (20M), this Traxxas fluid sits at the thicker end of the viscosity spectrum. The thick putty-like consistency creates significant resistance within the differential gears, which translates to more differential lock-up and reduced slippage between drive wheels. This is particularly important in centre differentials, where the right oil weight determines how power is split between the front and rear axles during acceleration, cornering, and weight transfer. In a 4WD brushless RC truck like the X-Maxx or Sledge, the centre differential is crucial for maintaining traction and preventing wheelies or understeer, and the 20M weight excels in this application. The oil's thickness also makes it suitable for locking differentials when full power needs to be delivered equally to both wheels on the same axle, such as in tight cornering situations or on slippery surfaces where independent wheel rotation would cause loss of traction. Traxxas engineers have developed this formula to work seamlessly with the tolerances and materials in Traxxas differentials, ensuring compatibility and preventing damage to seals or gears. Unlike thin oils that can migrate or break down under the extreme forces of high-performance brushless 6S and 8S RC vehicles, this thick formulation stays in place and maintains its viscosity characteristics through intense driving sessions.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is differential oil and why do I need it for my RC car? — Differential oil controls how power is distributed between your RC vehicle's drive wheels. The thicker the oil, the more the differential will lock up, meaning wheels will slip less and turn together more as a unit. Thinner oils allow more slip, which is useful on high-traction tracks where you want weight transfer, whilst thick oils like this 20M weight are better for low-traction surfaces or when you want maximum power transfer to both wheels simultaneously. Without the right differential oil, your RC car's handling will be unpredictable and you won't achieve optimal performance.
  • What weight differential oil should I use? — This depends on your track conditions, driving style, and personal preference. The 20M (20 million) weight is the thicker end of the spectrum and is most commonly used in centre differentials. If you find your RC truck understeers (nose pushes wide) or loses traction in turns, a thicker oil like this 20M weight can help. If your vehicle oversteers (rear slides) too much, you might try thinner oil. Most Traxxas vehicles come with a standard weight, so experimenting with different weights is part of fine-tuning your setup.
  • Is 20M weight suitable for beginners? — Yes, absolutely. Differential oil weight is one of the safest and easiest settings to experiment with on any RC car in the UK. Unlike internal gearing changes or suspension modifications, changing differential oil takes minutes and requires no mechanical expertise. Beginners can start with the weight their vehicle came with and experiment from there, making this an ideal first upgrade or maintenance task.
  • Which Traxxas models use this oil? — This 20M weight differential oil is compatible with a huge range of Traxxas vehicles including the X-Maxx Ultimate and Belted 4WD brushless monster trucks, XRT Ultimate and VXL-8S 4WD racing trucks, Sledge Belted 1/8 4WD brushless monster truck, WideMaxx monster truck, Maxx Slash 1/8 4WD brushless short course truck, and the X-Monster chassis platform. Always check your specific vehicle's manual for the recommended weight, but this 20M is one of the most versatile weights in the Traxxas range.
  • How often should I change differential oil? — Differential oil doesn't wear out like engine oil in a car, so you don't need to change it regularly just for maintenance. However, if you get water, sand, or dirt in your differential (such as after water play or dusty off-road sessions), you should flush and replace the oil. Additionally, you might want to change oil weights seasonally or when you change tracks to optimise performance, which means a single bottle of this thick 20M oil might last you a long time.
  • Can I mix different weight oils? — It's not recommended. If you want to experiment with a different weight, drain the old oil completely and refill with the new weight. Mixing weights can give you unpredictable handling characteristics and make it impossible to dial in your vehicle's setup properly.
  • What is the difference between this 20M weight and other Traxxas differential oils? — Traxxas produces differential oils in various weights, typically ranging from thin (like 30WT) to very thick (like 50WT or higher). The 20M weight is towards the thicker end of the standard range. Thinner oils allow more differential slip and are useful on high-grip tracks where you want weight transfer and agility, whilst thicker oils like this lock up the differential more, providing more traction and more predictable handling on low-grip surfaces or when you want maximum power delivery to both wheels. Think of it like choosing between a responsive, nimble setup (thin oil) and a planted, aggressive setup (thick oil).
