This is an essential accessory for any serious RC enthusiast running a winch-equipped scale crawler or recovery vehicle. Whether you're operating an RC car UK setup or running dedicated scale models, this wired controller provides reliable, intuitive winch control that integrates directly with your existing radio system without the need for separate wireless modules.
Designed with simplicity and practicality in mind, the Z-S1089 delivers plug-and-play installation that gets your winch operational within minutes. The unit is engineered to work seamlessly with any radio transmitter featuring a three-position third channel, making it an excellent choice for modellers who want direct, responsive winch control without wireless lag or battery complications. This wired solution is favoured by serious RC competitors and weekend bashers alike because it eliminates the variables associated with wireless control units, offering consistent performance every single time you hit the trail.
RC Model Shop stocks the RC4WD Z-S1089 as part of our comprehensive range of scale RC accessories and winch components. For anyone building a dedicated scale crawler or upgrading their recovery vehicle, this controller represents outstanding value and proven reliability from one of the industry's most trusted manufacturers in the RC hobby space.
Key Features
- Compact, Lightweight Design — The receiver unit measures just 41mm long, 31mm wide and 10mm tall, weighing only 10 grams, making it incredibly easy to mount discreetly within your RC vehicle's chassis without adding unnecessary weight or compromising scale appearance.
- Wide Operating Voltage Range (6V to 11.1V) — This flexible voltage compatibility allows the controller to work with virtually any standard battery configuration you might already be running in your RC car, from lower-voltage packs through to full 3S LiPo setups, giving you complete freedom in power source selection.
- Three-Position Third Channel Requirement — The unit operates from your radio transmitter's third channel using a three-position switch (on/off/on configuration), providing intuitive forward-off-reverse winch control that becomes second nature after your first recovery operation.
- Plug-and-Play Installation — No complex soldering or electronics expertise required; the Z-S1089 connects directly to your receiver with simple wire connections, and comprehensive instructions are included to guide you through the straightforward setup process.
- Includes Pre-Terminated Wiring — Two 6-inch pre-terminated wires are supplied (one receiver power wire and one winch control wire), eliminating the need for custom connectors and ensuring reliable, secure connections from day one.
- Extended Wire Options Available — If your vehicle layout requires longer cable runs, optional 3-inch and 9-inch wiring packs are available separately, allowing you to configure the system to match your specific RC model's dimensions and electrical architecture.
Technical Performance
The RC4WD Wired Winch Control Unit represents the pinnacle of reliable winch control engineering for scale RC applications. Operating across a voltage range of 6V to 11.1V, this controller accommodates everything from smaller battery configurations through to standard 3S LiPo packs, ensuring compatibility with the vast majority of modern RC setups running in the UK hobby market. The receiver unit itself is impressively compact, measuring just 41mm in length, 31mm in width and 10mm in height, with a total weight of only 10 grams—small enough to integrate invisibly into your RC vehicle without affecting weight distribution or scale fidelity. The included wiring harness utilises 150mm (6-inch) pre-terminated leads that weigh just 4 grams combined, maintaining the minimalist weight profile while delivering rock-solid electrical connections. The wired architecture eliminates the interference concerns sometimes associated with wireless controllers and provides instantaneous response to third-channel inputs, crucial when you're attempting delicate winch operations on technical terrain. The unit requires a three-position third channel on your transmitter (configured as on/off/on), which is standard on virtually all modern hobby-grade RC radios used in the UK. The electrical design accommodates the nuances of modern battery technology, though users should verify that their LiPo packs do not exceed 11.1V before operation, as some premium cells can slightly exceed this threshold. This is a purpose-engineered component designed to live in the harsh world of scale RC, where reliability and consistent performance are non-negotiable.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Do I need a wireless winch controller or will the wired Z-S1089 work for my setup? — The Z-S1089 is a wired controller that operates directly from your radio transmitter's third channel, making it ideal if your radio system features a three-position switch on the third channel. If your transmitter lacks this capability, RC4WD manufactures the wireless controller unit model Z-S1092 as an alternative solution.
- What battery voltage does the RC4WD Wired Winch Control Unit require? — The Z-S1089 operates across a voltage range of 6V to 11.1V, making it compatible with standard battery configurations from 2S through to 3S LiPo packs. However, some LiPo batteries can exceed 11.1V; always check your battery voltage before connecting the unit to avoid potential damage.
- Is the Z-S1089 suitable for beginners in RC hobbies? — Yes, this is an excellent choice for newcomers to winch-equipped scale vehicles. The plug-and-play design requires no soldering or advanced electronics knowledge, and comprehensive instructions are provided. Simply plug the receiver connectors into your receiver, connect the winch wire to your motor, and you're ready to operate. The included documentation makes the setup process straightforward.
- What is the difference between the wired Z-S1089 and the wireless Z-S1092 controller? — The Z-S1089 is a wired unit that connects directly to your receiver and transmitter's third channel, offering instantaneous response and eliminating wireless lag. It requires a three-position third channel on your radio. The Z-S1092 is a wireless controller designed for transmitters that lack this three-position switch capability. Choose the wired version if your radio system supports it, as wired control provides more immediate response and eliminates wireless variables.
- Will the RC4WD Z-S1089 work with any winch motor? — The Z-S1089 is designed to control winch motors operating within its 6V to 11.1V voltage range. RC4WD lists the Warn 1/10 9.5cti as a suggested compatible winch assembly. We recommend verifying your specific winch motor's voltage requirements before purchase.
- Is this controller waterproof? — No, the Z-S1089 is not waterproof. Whilst some users have successfully applied waterproofing methods independently, doing so will void the manufacturer's warranty. If you require waterproof electronics, you may need to explore alternative solutions or protective installations within your RC vehicle's chassis.
- What happens if I cut the control box wires? — Cutting or modifying any of the pre-terminated wires supplied with the unit will void the manufacturer's 30-day warranty. If you require different wire lengths, RC4WD provides optional wiring packs in 3-inch and 9-inch configurations specifically designed for this purpose.
