Key Features
- Heat Treated Hardened Steel Construction — The pinion gear is manufactured from hardened steel and heat-treated to achieve superior durability and resistance to wear, ensuring it maintains its tooth profile and mesh quality even after extended use in RC vehicles. This treatment process is critical for RC components that experience continuous rotational stress.
- Engineered and Manufactured by RC4WD — As an RC4WD original component, this pinion gear is designed and produced to the brand's exacting standards, guaranteeing compatibility and performance consistency across RC4WD drivetrain systems and compatible platforms used by RC enthusiasts UK-wide.
- 18 Tooth, 32 Pitch Specification — The 18-tooth count combined with 32-pitch dimensions creates the ideal gearing for smooth meshing with compatible spur gears, delivering reliable power transmission with minimal backlash. This specification is widely used in RC crawlers and scale vehicles for its versatility and proven performance.
- Precision 3.1mm Bore Size — The accurately machined 3.1mm bore ensures a secure fit on compatible RC motor shafts, preventing slipping whilst maintaining straightforward installation. This precision manufacturing is essential for consistent gear mesh and reliable drivetrain operation in RC vehicles.
- Compact Dimensions for Space-Constrained Builds — With a total length of just 10mm, outside diameter of 16mm and gear width of 5mm, this pinion gear is engineered to fit within tight motor compartments common in modern RC crawlers, buggies and scale vehicles without requiring chassis modifications.
- Lightweight Design at Just 9 Grams — Weighing only 9 grams, this pinion gear adds minimal unsprung weight to your RC vehicle's drivetrain, helping preserve the precise weight distribution and handling characteristics that RC builders carefully optimise.
- Includes Installation Hardware — The package includes a precision M3 x 3mm set screw (part Z-S0124), providing everything necessary for secure installation without requiring additional fasteners from your RC spares box.
Technical Performance
This hardened steel pinion gear represents a substantial upgrade in drivetrain quality for RC vehicles. The heat treatment process applied during manufacturing increases the material's hardness and wear resistance significantly, extending the working lifespan of the gear under the continuous rotational forces experienced in RC crawlers, buggies and scale vehicles. The 32-pitch specification combined with the 18-tooth count creates a precise gearing arrangement that produces smooth mesh characteristics when paired with compatible spur gears, reducing noise and vibration whilst maintaining efficient power transmission from your RC motor to the drivetrain.
The 3.1mm bore diameter has been precisely machined to exacting tolerances, ensuring secure seating on RC motor shafts whilst eliminating the slipping that can occur with poorly fitted pinions. This precision is crucial for reliable RC performance, as any micro-movement between the pinion and motor shaft introduces inconsistency and premature wear. The compact overall dimensions—10mm length, 16mm outside diameter, and 5mm gear width—make this pinion ideal for installation in modern RC vehicles where motor compartment space is at a premium. The minimal 9-gram weight ensures the pinion does not negatively impact your RC vehicle's weight distribution or handling characteristics. This pinion gear is engineered for use with RC4WD's proven drivetrain systems, including compatibility with the R3 2 Speed (Z-U0025), R3 Single Speed (Z-U0028), and AX2 2 Speed (Z-U0006) transmissions, making it an excellent choice for RC builders working with these platforms.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What does the 32-pitch specification mean on this RC pinion gear? — Pitch on RC gears refers to the number of gear teeth per inch of the gear's diameter. The 32-pitch specification indicates this pinion gear is part of the 32-pitch gear system, which must be paired with compatible 32-pitch spur gears for proper mesh and reliable operation. Mixing different pitches will result in poor mesh quality and potential drivetrain damage.
- Is the RC4WD 18T pinion gear suitable for beginners? — Yes, this pinion gear is an excellent choice for RC vehicle builders at any experience level. Whilst it's a precision component, installation is straightforward with the included M3 set screw providing secure fastening. Beginners will appreciate that this is an original RC4WD component designed for reliable performance without requiring extensive technical knowledge to install.
- What is the difference between this 18-tooth pinion and other tooth counts? — The 18-tooth count determines your RC vehicle's final gear ratio when paired with a specific spur gear. Fewer teeth on the pinion (lower numbers) create a higher gear ratio, resulting in higher top speeds but reduced torque and acceleration. The 18-tooth specification offers a balanced approach suitable for crawlers and scale vehicles where controlled speed and consistent torque delivery are priorities.
- Will this pinion gear fit my RC motor shaft? — The 3.1mm bore is designed for RC motors with standard 3.1mm shafts, which is the common specification for RC4WD motors and many comparable RC motor systems. Before purchasing, verify your motor shaft diameter matches 3.1mm to ensure proper fit. The included M3 set screw provides the clamping force necessary to secure the pinion firmly to your motor shaft.
- How long will this hardened steel pinion gear last in RC use? — The heat-treated hardened steel construction significantly extends component lifespan compared to standard pinion gears. With proper maintenance including regular inspection for wear and appropriate lubrication of the gear mesh, this pinion should provide thousands of hours of reliable service in typical RC vehicle use. Longevity depends on driving style, maintenance practices and the specific RC vehicle application.
- Can I use this pinion gear with non-RC4WD transmissions? — This pinion gear is specifically designed and tested for use with RC4WD transmissions including the R3 2 Speed, R3 Single Speed and AX2 2 Speed units. Using this pinion with non-compatible transmissions may result in poor mesh quality, increased wear and unreliable performance. Always verify compatibility with your specific RC drivetrain before installation.
