Overview

The RC4WD Internal Springs for ARB 70mm Shocks (Z-S1177) are essential upgrade components for anyone running ARB Old Man Emu 70mm shock absorbers on their RC crawler, scale truck, or off-road RC vehicle. These precision-engineered internal springs allow you to fine-tune the damping characteristics of your suspension system, enabling you to optimise your RC car's handling across a wide range of driving conditions and terrains. Whether you're tackling rocky crawling courses, fast desert terrain, or competitive racing tracks, having the right spring rate makes a genuine difference to performance and driver confidence.

This spring set is designed specifically for use with ARB Old Man Emu 70mm shocks, including the popular RC4WD 70mm Old Man Emu Nitrocharger Sport Shock (model Z-D0034). The kit supplies four different spring rates in colour-coded variants, giving you maximum flexibility to experiment and dial in the perfect setup for your particular RC car or driving style. For UK RC enthusiasts and hobbyists, whether you're a seasoned basher or someone exploring the world of advanced suspension tuning, these springs represent an affordable way to improve your vehicle's handling without replacing entire shock assemblies.

Spring rate selection is one of the most practical suspension adjustments available to RC car owners. The stock shock spring rate on ARB 70mm shocks is 0.7, but by swapping in different rates from this set, you can adjust how quickly your shocks compress and extend. Softer springs (lower rates) give you more compliance over bumps and smoother corner entry, whilst stiffer springs (higher rates) provide better support under acceleration and sharper handling response. This makes the Z-S1177 an invaluable tuning tool for anyone serious about maximising their RC vehicle's potential.

Key Features

  • Four different spring rates included — This set supplies you with spring rates of 0.3 (Yellow), 0.5 (White), 1.5 (Red), and 1.9 (Blue), giving you complete flexibility to experiment and find the ideal damping setup for your specific driving conditions and RC vehicle weight distribution.
  • Colour-coded for easy identification — Each spring features a small colour marking on the bottom that clearly identifies the spring rate, eliminating any confusion when swapping springs between front and rear shocks or comparing setups with fellow RC enthusiasts.
  • Enough springs for four complete shocks — The kit includes 16 springs in total (four of each rate), providing sufficient springs to outfit a complete four-shock suspension system, or to allow you to run mixed rates on different shocks for asymmetrical tuning.
  • Direct fit for ARB Old Man Emu 70mm shocks — These springs are engineered to work seamlessly with genuine ARB Old Man Emu 70mm shock absorbers, including the RC4WD version, ensuring perfect fitment without modification or adaptation.
  • Lightweight precision engineering — At just 2 grams per spring, these components add minimal unsprung weight to your suspension whilst delivering precise damping characteristics that directly influence your RC car's handling balance and responsiveness.
  • Stock rate reference point — Knowing that the standard stock shock spring rate is 0.7 gives you a clear baseline from which to tune upwards or downwards, making it easy to understand how each alternative rate will affect your vehicle's behaviour.

Technical Performance

These internal springs are manufactured to exacting specifications to ensure consistent performance and durability in demanding RC applications. Each spring measures 26mm in length with an outer diameter of 6.3mm and inner diameter of 4.1mm, precisely matching the internal geometry of ARB 70mm shock bodies. The spring rates—0.3, 0.5, 1.5, and 1.9—represent a comprehensive range covering everything from maximum compliance for technical rock crawling to significant stiffness for high-speed bashers and racers. The engineering behind spring rate selection is fundamental to suspension tuning in RC cars: spring stiffness directly affects how quickly shock absorbers respond to terrain inputs, influencing both ride quality and vehicle stability. Softer springs allow the suspension to absorb large obstacles more gradually, whilst stiffer springs maintain ride height and prevent excessive suspension extension during aggressive driving. For UK RC car enthusiasts running scale crawlers, short course trucks, buggies, or trail rigs, having this range of spring rates at your disposal transforms suspension setup from a guessing game into a precision tuning exercise. The colour-marking system—yellow for 0.3, white for 0.5, red for 1.5, and blue for 1.9—makes it straightforward to manage multiple spring rates and document your preferred configurations for future reference. Whether you're dialling in a newly acquired ARB shock setup or seeking marginal handling improvements on an established vehicle, these springs provide the fine-tuning capability that separates good setups from genuinely optimised ones.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is the difference between spring rates and why would I need different rates? — Spring rate determines how stiff or soft your shock absorbers feel when compressing and extending. The lower the number (0.3, 0.5), the softer the spring and the more easily your suspension absorbs bumps; higher rates (1.5, 1.9) make the suspension stiffer and more resistant to compression. Different terrain types and driving styles benefit from different rates. Rock crawling often uses softer springs for maximum articulation, whilst high-speed bashers benefit from stiffer springs that resist bottoming out during jumps and maintain ride height under acceleration.
  • Can I use these springs on other shock brands? — These springs are specifically designed for ARB Old Man Emu 70mm shocks and compatible variants. The internal dimensions (6.3mm outer diameter, 4.1mm inner diameter, 26mm length) are tailored to fit inside ARB 70mm shock bodies. Attempting to use them on different shock designs from other manufacturers is not recommended as they may not fit correctly or perform safely.
  • What is the stock spring rate and how does it compare? — The factory stock spring rate on ARB 70mm shocks is 0.7. This kit includes rates both softer (0.3 and 0.5) and stiffer (1.5 and 1.9) than stock, allowing you to experiment in both directions. The 0.3 rate is significantly softer for maximum compliance, whilst the 1.9 rate is substantially stiffer for higher-performance applications.
  • How many shocks can this kit equip? — This set includes 16 springs total (four springs of each rate), providing enough springs for four complete shocks. If you run asymmetrical setups (different rates front and rear, or left and right), you have flexibility in how you distribute the rates.
  • Are these springs suitable for beginners? — Yes, absolutely. Whilst spring tuning is an intermediate skill, these springs are durable and easy to swap without special tools. Beginners can start with the stock 0.7 rate equivalent or try the included rates to see how suspension tuning affects handling. The colour-coding makes it impossible to mix up rates.
  • How are the spring rates marked and identified? — Each spring has a small colour marking on the bottom to indicate its rate. Yellow = 0.3, White = 0.5, Red = 1.5, Blue = 1.9. This colour system makes it simple to identify springs visually without consulting documentation, and makes it easy to keep track of your preferred setup combinations.
  • Do I need tools to change the springs? — Changing springs typically requires disassembling the shock body from your RC vehicle, which may require basic hex drivers or Allen keys depending on your vehicle's design. The springs themselves install and remove by hand or with a small shock spring tool. Consult your specific shock documentation for detailed disassembly instructions.
  • Will different spring rates affect my lap times or performance? — Potentially, yes. The correct spring rate for your vehicle's weight, driving style, and terrain can result in noticeably better handling, reduced bottoming out, improved traction in corners, and more confidence during aggressive driving. Finding the right rate for your specific application is part of the RC tuning process and can make a real difference to your performance.
