Overview

The Corally 32 DP Pinion Short Hardened Steel 22 Teeth with 5mm shaft diameter (model C-72522) is a precision-engineered drivetrain component designed for RC enthusiasts across the UK who demand reliability and performance from their models. This hardened steel pinion gear represents a significant upgrade for any RC car, buggy, truck or touring car that utilises 32 DP (diametral pitch) gearing systems. Whether you're a competitive racer, weekend basher, or serious hobbyist building your perfect RC setup, this pinion gear delivers the durability and consistent performance required for extended driving sessions without premature wear or tooth stripping.

As part of Corally's comprehensive range of transmission components, the 22-tooth pinion is engineered to pair with compatible spur gears to create the ideal gear ratio for your specific driving application. The short-length design ensures compatibility with standard RC car and truck chassis configurations, whilst the hardened steel construction provides exceptional resistance to the stresses and impacts of high-performance driving. Available in multiple tooth counts from 11 to 27 teeth, this particular 22-tooth variant offers a balanced setup suitable for various vehicle types and motor specifications. RC enthusiasts in the UK will appreciate the consistent quality and proven reliability that Corally components bring to their builds.

This is a genuine Corally component, manufactured to strict quality standards. The pinion gear is an essential wear item that may require periodic replacement depending on your driving intensity and conditions. Keeping spare pinions on hand ensures you can continue enjoying your RC experience without interruption, and the 22-tooth configuration offers versatility across different vehicle platforms and tuning requirements.

Key Features

  • Hardened Steel Construction — Made from hardened steel rather than softer materials, this pinion gear resists tooth wear, deformation, and stripping far more effectively than standard plastic alternatives, ensuring longer service life and more reliable performance in demanding conditions.
  • 32 DP Module Rating — The 32 DP (diametral pitch) specification means this pinion is engineered to mesh precisely with 32 DP spur gears, ensuring proper tooth engagement, smooth power transmission, and reduced noise during operation.
  • 22-Tooth Configuration — The 22-tooth design provides a balanced gear ratio suitable for multiple vehicle types and motor setups, offering moderate acceleration with adequate top speed potential for both racing and recreational driving.
  • 5mm Shaft Diameter — The standardised 5mm shaft diameter ensures compatibility with most modern RC car and truck motor shafts and transmission housings, making this pinion a direct replacement or upgrade component for numerous models.
  • Short Length Profile — The short-length design ensures this pinion fits standard RC chassis without requiring modifications to the transmission housing or motor mounting, maintaining your vehicle's original geometry and balance.
  • Precision Engineering — Each pinion is manufactured to tight tolerances, guaranteeing consistent tooth profiles and runout characteristics that minimise vibration and ensure smooth engagement with your spur gear.
  • Ideal for Competitive and Recreational Use — Whether you're tuning for track racing, off-road bashings, or casual cruising, hardened steel pinions like this are the preferred choice of serious RC enthusiasts who refuse to compromise on drivetrain reliability.

Technical Performance

The Corally 32 DP Pinion represents a significant step up in drivetrain engineering and longevity compared to standard plastic pinion gears commonly found in ready-to-run RC cars. The hardened steel material specification means this component will withstand the cumulative stresses of repeated acceleration, deceleration, and cornering forces far better than acetal or nylon alternatives. The 32 DP module is the standard specification found across most modern 1/10-scale RC cars, buggies, trucks, and touring cars available in the UK market, making this pinion a versatile upgrade component. The 22-tooth count provides a mathematically balanced ratio when paired with commonly-used 49-tooth spur gears (approximately 2.23:1 ratio) or 48-tooth alternatives (approximately 2.18:1 ratio), offering sufficient acceleration for competitive track driving whilst maintaining reasonable top-end speed for recreational use. The 5mm shaft diameter is the industry standard for brushed and brushless motor shafts in 1/10-scale vehicles, ensuring straightforward installation without adapters or modifications. Short-length pinions like this are specifically designed to work within standard transmission housings without the need for additional spacers or custom mounting solutions, preserving your vehicle's original specifications and performance characteristics. The hardened steel construction offers measurable advantages in wear resistance, with tooth longevity typically extending 2-3 times longer than comparable plastic alternatives under identical driving conditions, making this pinion an economical choice for drivers who run their models regularly. The precision manufacturing process ensures minimal runout and consistent tooth profile geometry, translating to smoother gear mesh, quieter operation, and more efficient power transfer from motor to wheels.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What vehicles is the Corally 22-tooth 32 DP pinion compatible with? — This pinion is compatible with any 1/10-scale RC car, buggy, truck, or touring car that uses 32 DP gearing with a 5mm motor shaft. This includes models from FTX, Traxxas, ARRMA, Losi, and other RC manufacturers. The 22-tooth configuration works with standard 48 or 49-tooth spur gears to create appropriate gear ratios for various driving styles and track conditions.
  • Why choose hardened steel pinions over plastic alternatives? — Hardened steel pinions significantly outlast plastic alternatives because they resist tooth wear, deformation, and stripping even under sustained high-load driving. Steel pinions are the preferred choice for competitive racing and regular weekend bashing because they reduce the frequency of drivetrain replacement, ultimately saving money and ensuring more consistent performance throughout the driving season.
  • How do I know if my RC car needs a pinion gear upgrade? — If you notice reduced acceleration, rough drivetrain noises, or stripped teeth on your existing pinion, it's time for a replacement. Upgrading to hardened steel from plastic is worthwhile if you drive regularly or competitively, as the improved durability will reduce maintenance intervals and improve reliability.
  • What is the difference between the 22-tooth and other tooth counts in the Corally range? — Different tooth counts create different gear ratios when paired with your spur gear. Lower tooth counts (11-17 teeth) provide aggressive acceleration for racing and technical tracks, whilst higher counts (23-27 teeth) offer higher top speeds for open circuit driving. The 22-tooth sits in the middle, offering balanced performance for versatile driving conditions.
  • Is this pinion easy to install? — Yes, installation is straightforward for anyone with basic RC mechanical knowledge. Remove your existing pinion from the motor shaft, slide on the new Corally pinion, and secure with the retaining hardware. The 5mm shaft diameter and short length ensure a direct fit without modifications to your transmission housing.
  • How often will I need to replace this pinion? — Replacement frequency depends on driving intensity and conditions. Hardened steel pinions typically last considerably longer than plastic alternatives. Regular drivers might need replacement every 2-3 months of active use, whilst occasional bashers might stretch this to 6 months or more. Inspect periodically for worn or stripped teeth.
  • Does the 22-tooth ratio work with brushless motors? — Absolutely. This pinion works identically well with both brushed and brushless motors, as the engagement with the spur gear is purely mechanical. The gear ratio created by the 22-tooth pinion remains constant regardless of motor type.
