Technical Performance

The Corally 64 DP Pinion represents the pinnacle of precision gear manufacturing for competitive RC racing in the UK and beyond. Every component is engineered with race-winning performance in mind. The hardened steel material undergoes a specialised heat treatment process that increases hardness and wear resistance without making the gear brittle, creating a material that can handle thousands of harsh acceleration cycles without tooth degradation. The CNC tooth cutting process produces a gear with a contact ratio that ensures multiple teeth are always engaged with the spur gear, distributing load evenly and minimising stress concentrations that can lead to premature failure. The 19-tooth configuration, when paired with appropriate spur gears, delivers a gear ratio that balances acceleration and top speed—essential for competitive racing where you need quick getaway and sustained velocity. The 64 DP module is the standard pitch size for 1/10-scale RC cars and is the most widely adopted specification in the UK RC racing community, ensuring compatibility with virtually all aftermarket and stock spur gears. With a 3.17mm bore diameter, installation is straightforward using the supplied 1.5mm hex key, and the gear can be changed in minutes if you need to adjust your final drive ratio between races. The 4mm teeth width provides optimal load distribution during mesh with the spur gear, and the 9mm overall length keeps the pinion compact without sacrificing strength. Running concentricity is maintained to ultra-tight tolerances—typically within 0.01mm—meaning there's virtually no run-out or wobble as the gear spins, which translates directly to improved handling precision and reduced mechanical noise.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is a pinion gear and why does it matter for my RC car? — A pinion gear is the small gear mounted on your electric motor shaft that meshes with the larger spur gear in your RC car's drivetrain. It directly controls your final drive ratio, which determines how quickly your motor's rotations are translated into wheel speed. A smaller pinion (like this 19T) increases wheel speed but reduces torque, whilst a larger pinion decreases speed but increases acceleration. The quality of your pinion gear affects efficiency, noise, vibration and overall performance consistency.
  • What is 64 DP and will this pinion fit my RC car? — DP stands for Diametral Pitch, which is a standard measurement of gear tooth size. 64 DP is the standard pitch for 1/10-scale RC cars and is the most common specification used in UK RC racing. This pinion will fit any RC car equipped with a 64 DP drivetrain—check your car's manual or ask your dealer if you're unsure. The 3.17mm shaft diameter is also the standard for most 1/10-scale electric motors.
  • Why is hardened steel better than standard steel for pinion gears? — Hardened steel undergoes a special heat treatment process that increases its resistance to wear and deformation without becoming brittle. This means the teeth maintain their shape and spacing even after thousands of meshing cycles, reducing backlash and ensuring consistent performance. Standard steel gears wear faster, particularly under high-load racing conditions, leading to increased noise, vibration and eventual tooth stripping.
  • What does CNC cut teeth mean and why does it matter? — CNC (Computer Numerical Control) cutting uses precision machinery controlled by computer programs to machine each tooth to exact specifications. This produces teeth with consistent shape, spacing and angle across the entire gear, ensuring smooth engagement with your spur gear. Hand-cut or injection-moulded gears have tolerance variations that cause binding, noise and vibration—CNC precision eliminates these issues.
  • Can I change my gear ratio by using a different pinion? — Yes. Using a larger-tooth-count pinion (e.g., 21T instead of 19T) reduces your final drive ratio, giving you better acceleration but lower top speed. Using a smaller pinion (e.g., 17T) increases top speed but reduces acceleration. Most serious RC racers carry several pinion gears to dial in the perfect setup for different tracks and conditions.
  • How often should I replace my pinion gear? — High-quality hardened steel pinions like this Corally unit typically last for several seasons of regular racing. Replace your pinion if you notice increased noise during operation, visible tooth wear or chipping, or if your RC car starts pulling to one side (which can indicate pinion wear causing uneven mesh). Always inspect your pinion regularly as part of your maintenance routine.
  • What is concentricity and why is it important? — Concentricity refers to how perfectly centred the teeth are around the gear's bore. If a gear's teeth are eccentric (off-centre), the gear will wobble as it rotates, causing vibration and uneven tooth meshing. The Corally pinion is manufactured to ultra-tight concentricity tolerances, meaning the teeth run perfectly true, eliminating vibration and ensuring every tooth engages consistently with your spur gear.
  • Is this pinion suitable for beginners? — This is a specialised replacement or upgrade component rather than a complete beginner package. However, if you already own an RC car with a 64 DP drivetrain and need to replace or upgrade your pinion gear, this Corally unit is an excellent choice regardless of experience level. It's straightforward to install using a 1.5mm hex key, and the quality will improve your car's performance and reliability.
  • What tools do I need to install this pinion? — You'll need a 1.5mm hex key (also called a hex wrench or Allen key) to tighten the pinion onto your motor shaft. Optional but recommended: threadlock compound such as Loctite to prevent the pinion from loosening during operation. No other special tools are required.
