Technical Performance

The Etronix Powerpal Pocket 2 represents intelligent engineering focused on delivering reliable battery charging in the most compact form factor possible. The charger's dual-range input voltage specification of 110–240V AC means it operates safely from any UK mains supply, with internal circuitry intelligently handling the voltage conversion without requiring user adjustment or external transformers. The 800mA output current has been carefully calibrated to provide safe, steady charging suitable for typical NiCd and NiMH battery chemistries commonly used in ready to run RC cars, scale crawlers and competition RC vehicles. At just 12W maximum charge power, the charger generates minimal heat during operation, protecting both the charger's internal components and the battery cells themselves from thermal stress that can reduce battery lifespan. The automatic cell detection feature eliminates the risk of user error when connecting 5 to 8 cell battery packs, making this charger equally suitable for beginners learning proper battery care and experienced competitors who value reliability over complexity. The Tamiya connector has proven itself as the industry standard across countless RC vehicle brands and aftermarket battery manufacturers throughout the UK, ensuring compatibility with the vast majority of hobby-grade RC batteries. Construction quality throughout reflects Etronix's reputation for dependable charging products, with internal electronics protected by a durable plastic housing designed to withstand workshop and field use. The compact 100 x 60 x 35mm dimensions and 180g weight make this charger genuinely pocket-sized without compromising charging performance or safety features.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is the Etronix Powerpal Pocket 2 suitable for beginners? — Yes, absolutely. The automatic 5–8 cell detection removes all guesswork from the charging process, and the simple operation requires no technical knowledge. Simply plug the charger into any UK mains socket, connect your NiCd or NiMH battery via the Tamiya connector, and charging begins automatically. There are no complex menus or settings to navigate, making this an ideal first charger for anyone new to the RC hobby.
  • What batteries does the Powerpal Pocket 2 charge? — This charger is designed for NiCd (nickel-cadmium) and NiMH (nickel-metal hydride) battery chemistries in 5 to 8 cell configurations. The automatic cell detection means you simply connect your battery and the charger handles the rest. It is not designed for lithium-based batteries such as LiPo or LiFe, which require different charging protocols and dedicated chargers for safety.
  • Can I use this charger outside the UK? — The UK plug version is designed specifically for UK mains sockets. However, the charger's internal circuitry accepts input voltage from 110–240V AC, meaning if you travel to other countries, you can use a simple plug adapter to connect it to local mains supplies. An equivalent European plug version is also available separately if you need it.
  • What's the difference between the Powerpal Pocket 2 and other chargers? — The Powerpal Pocket 2 prioritises portability and simplicity over advanced features. Unlike larger workshop chargers with multiple channels and digital displays, this charger is genuinely pocket-sized at just 100 x 60 x 35mm and 180g, making it perfect for carrying to the track or keeping in your kit bag. The automatic 5–8 cell detection and steady 800mA output make it ideal for standard hobby NiCd and NiMH batteries without unnecessary complexity or cost.
  • How long does it take to charge a battery? — Charge time depends on battery capacity and the mAh rating of your specific battery pack. With 800mA output current, a typical 3000mAh battery pack would charge in approximately 3.75 hours. The exact time will vary based on your battery's capacity, chemistry and current state of discharge.
  • Is this charger safe to leave unattended? — Yes. The automatic charging detection and safety features built into the Powerpal Pocket 2 mean it is safe to leave connected overnight or for extended periods. The charger will not overcharge your NiCd or NiMH batteries, making unattended charging practical for everyday battery maintenance.
  • Does this charger work with all RC battery connectors? — This charger features a Tamiya connector, which is the most common connector type across the RC hobby in the UK. If your battery uses a different connector type, you will need either a battery pack with Tamiya connector or an inexpensive connector adapter available from most UK RC retailers.
