Frequently Asked Questions
- What is a pinion gear and why do I need it for my RC car? — The pinion gear is a critical component that mounts directly on your RC motor shaft and meshes with the spur gear to transfer power from the motor to the wheels. By changing the number of pinion teeth, you can adjust your car's overall gear ratio, affecting acceleration, top speed, and performance across different track surfaces. A smaller tooth count (like this 18-tooth) provides more acceleration, while a larger tooth count increases top speed.
- Will this pinion fit my RC car? — This 48 DP pinion will fit any RC car that uses 48 DP gearing and has a motor with a 3.17mm shaft diameter. This is a standard specification across most modern 1/10 and 1/8 scale electric RC cars available in the UK. Check your car's manual or existing pinion to confirm it uses 48 DP gearing before purchasing. If you're unsure, our team at RC Model Shop can help you determine compatibility.
- What is the difference between this 18-tooth pinion and other tooth counts available? — The number of teeth directly determines your vehicle's gear ratio. An 18-tooth pinion is considered a mid-range option that offers balanced performance. Lower tooth counts (like 16T or 17T) provide more acceleration and easier handling but sacrifice top speed, making them ideal for tight technical tracks. Higher tooth counts (like 19T or 20T) increase top speed and are better suited for fast, flowing tracks but require more power to accelerate. Choosing the right pinion depends on your track layout, vehicle weight, and motor power.
- What makes Team Corally pinions different from cheaper alternatives? — Team Corally pinions are manufactured from specially hardened steel using precision CNC machinery, ensuring perfect tooth geometry and ultra-tight tolerances. This results in superior durability, longer lifespan, and vibration-free operation compared to budget alternatives. The hardened steel resists wear better, maintaining consistent performance over many racing sessions, while the precision manufacturing delivers smooth power transfer and improved handling characteristics that competitive racers in the UK depend on.
- Is this suitable for beginners? — Yes, this pinion is suitable for beginners as well as advanced racers. It's a simple drop-in component that doesn't require special knowledge to install. However, beginners should understand that choosing the correct tooth count for your specific car and track is important for optimal performance. Our team at RC Model Shop can advise you on selecting the right pinion for your particular RC car and usage.
- How do I install this pinion gear? — Installation is straightforward: remove your motor from the car, unscrew the hex setscrew on the existing pinion using a 1.5mm hex key, slide off the old pinion, slide on the new Corally pinion, and tighten the setscrew securely. Ensure the pinion meshes properly with your spur gear before reinstalling the motor. Most RC car instructions include detailed steps for pinion replacement.
- How often should I replace my pinion gear? — The lifespan of a pinion gear depends on usage intensity, track conditions, and maintenance. The hardened steel used in Corally pinions provides exceptional durability, typically lasting many racing sessions or weeks of casual bashing. Inspect your pinion regularly for tooth damage or wear. If you notice the teeth becoming rounded or chipped, it's time for a replacement to maintain optimal performance and prevent damage to other drivetrain components.
- Can I use this pinion with any spur gear? — Yes, any 48 DP spur gear will mesh correctly with this 48 DP pinion, as they share the same diametral pitch specification. However, the specific tooth count combination determines your overall gear ratio. Experiment with different spur gear tooth counts to fine-tune your vehicle's performance for your preferred track conditions.
- What motor shaft sizes are compatible with this pinion? — This pinion is designed specifically for 3.17mm motor shafts, which is the standard diameter used on most modern brushless RC motors. Some older motors or specialty motors may use different shaft sizes (such as 5mm), so verify your motor's shaft diameter before purchasing. If in doubt, contact our team at RC Model Shop for clarification.
- Is hardened steel better than standard steel for pinion gears? — Absolutely. Hardened steel provides superior resistance to wear, deformation, and tooth stripping compared to standard steel. The hardening process increases the material's strength and durability, allowing the teeth to maintain their precise shape even under extreme loads and repeated acceleration cycles. This translates to longer gear life and more consistent performance, which is why serious racers and competitive teams specify hardened steel pinions.
