Axial AXP8 Gilamon 4X4 RC Trail Buggy Overview

The wait is over. With the AXP8 Gilamon 2.2 RTR, Axial introduces the next level in RC rock crawling performance. It’s the most innovative and maneuverable rig you’ve ever seen.

A true rock crawler, the Gilamon isn’t made for overlanding or easy "Sunday" drives. With its 2.2-inch wheel setup and new AXP8 platform, this RC crawler has no match on the most challenging trails and obstacles. Because it’s ready-to-run, you don’t need experience to succeed. But if you have spent a lot of time on the trails, you’ll be blown away by what you can do now that was impossible before.

What’s so revolutionary about the AXP8? Let’s start with its heavy-duty, high-clearance, front and rear AF16P portal axles - and especially the rear-axle ASD (Axial Selectable Drive), a more advanced and highly capable drivetrain version of cutting brakes. While cutting brakes are only as strong as the brakes themselves, ASD physically and completely locks a wheel. It’s better than cutting brakes. And unlike front dig, which locks the entyre axle, ASD can lock either of the rear wheels individually. That gives you an even tighter turning radius and greatly improved maneuvering capabilities.

The AF16P front axle and advanced new AT6 transmission are also designed to accept optional ASD setups, giving you an unprecedented amount of vehicle control. With ASD assigned to a 3-position switch on your transmitter, you can activate locking or constant 4WD functions. Using a 5-position switch, you’ll be able to configure the ASD system to drive, to free wheel, or to lock (option parts and programable Tx required).

No RC crawler has offered this level of sophistication before. Nothing can stand in your way. The AT6 transmission is also equipped with a 30% underdrive to the rear axle that dramatically improves climbing and increases maneuverability.

Further improving the rig’s trail performance are the extreme articulation of its 4-link suspension and the additional clearance of its realistic, new IS10 internal spring shocks. An oversized, high torque Axial Boulder 550 21-turn brushed motor sends power through durable, heavy-duty WB12 driveshafts to officially licensed Raceline Avenger wheels and 5.5-inch tall Mickey Thompson Baja Boss M/T tyres. Surrounding it all is a durable composite cage that offers protection and challenge-ready trail buggy looks.

The included Spektrum DX3 radio and Firma 70A ESC give you the telemetry benefits of exclusive Smart technology. Other high-quality, factory-installed Spektrum on-board electronics include a SR515 5-channel DSMR receiver, S682 metal gear steering servo, and SX117AX metal gear micro servo for the ASD function. Just add your choice of recommended battery and charger - then you’re ready to take on any obstacle that lies ahead.

Get ready to go where no crawler has gone before with the Axial AXP8 Gilamon 2.2 RTR. It’s the king of the hill, the trail, the canyon, the ledge, and everything else off-road!

Technical Performance

The Axial AXP8 Gilamon 2.2 represents a significant leap forward in RC rock crawler engineering and performance capability. At 1/8 scale with dimensions of 508mm length, 320mm width, and 229mm height, the Gilamon presents an imposing and highly capable platform that commands respect on the trail. The complete vehicle weighs just 3.2 kilogrammes, a weight distribution that optimises ground pressure and articulation for maximum obstacle-conquering ability. The 14.5-inch wheelbase provides the perfect balance between stability and manoeuvrability, whilst the 9-inch height allows the crawler to navigate tight gaps and overhangs. The 4WD drivetrain with locked differentials ensures maximum traction regardless of terrain conditions, whilst the brushed motor system paired with the Spektrum Firma 70A ESC delivers smooth, controllable power delivery ideal for precision crawling. Battery compatibility is straightforward—the vehicle accepts 2-3S LiPo batteries with IC3 or EC3 connectors, providing flexibility in power selection and run time. The high-quality Spektrum electronics package, including the Smart-compatible Firma 70A ESC, allows real-time telemetry monitoring when paired with a Spektrum Smart LiPo battery, letting you track voltage levels directly on your DX3 transmitter. The 34-tooth spur gear and 14-tooth pinion combine with the 30% rear-axle underdrive to produce ideal gearing for climbing and technical work. Every component—from the AF16P portal axles with their 32-pitch gears to the WB12 driveshafts—is engineered for durability under extreme rock crawling conditions. The Spektrum electronics feature waterproof construction throughout, making this ready-to-run RC buggy suitable for crawling in muddy, wet, or otherwise challenging weather conditions that would damage lesser equipment.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is the Axial AXP8 Gilamon 2.2 suitable for beginners? — Yes, absolutely. The Gilamon arrives completely assembled and ready to run, requiring only a battery and charger to begin crawling. Beginners appreciate the intuitive Spektrum DX3 radio system and precise control, whilst the innovative ASD system is sophisticated enough that experienced crawlers will be amazed by new possibilities previously impossible on RC trails. You don't need experience to succeed with this ready-to-run RC car UK retailers recommend for both new and veteran hobbyists.
  • What battery and charger do I need for the Gilamon 2.2? — The vehicle requires a 2-3S LiPo battery with IC3 or EC3 connector. A 2S battery suits casual crawling and longest runtime, whilst 3S delivers more aggressive performance. We recommend a quality LiPo charger such as the Spektrum S2100 G2 or equivalent. Always use a proper LiPo charger and never attempt to charge with standard wall chargers.
  • What is Axial Selectable Drive (ASD) and why does it matter? — ASD is Axial's revolutionary advancement beyond traditional cutting brakes. Rather than relying only on brake strength, ASD physically and completely locks individual rear wheels or locks both wheels together. You control this through a 3-position or 5-position transmitter switch, selecting between normal 4WD drive, free-wheel mode, or complete wheel lock. This gives unmatched control and dramatically tighter turning radius than any competing RC trail buggy with cutting brakes alone. Even the front axle and transmission accept optional ASD upgrades for future expansion.
  • How does the Gilamon compare to other 1/8 scale brushed RC crawlers? — The Gilamon stands apart through its ASD drivetrain system, which is more advanced than cutting brakes found on rival vehicles. The heavy-duty AF16P portal axles provide superior ground clearance, whilst the new AT6 transmission with 30% underdrive dramatically improves climbing and manoeuvrability. The 4-link suspension is smoother and more articulate than 3-link designs. Factory-installed Spektrum electronics with waterproof construction and Smart technology compatibility offer telemetry and reliability that justify the investment. Most importantly, the engineering and innovation put ASD capability at the forefront—this is the most manoeuvrable and capable rig at this scale.
  • What is included in the electronics package? — The Gilamon comes with a complete Spektrum electronics suite: the DX3 2.4GHz Smart transmitter with 3 channels, SR515 5-channel DSMR receiver, Firma 70A brushed Smart ESC, S682 metal-gear steering servo (20kg), and SX117AX metal-gear micro servo for ASD control. All on-board electronics are waterproof and pre-installed and tested by the manufacturer.
  • What tyres and wheels does the Gilamon use? — The vehicle rides on officially licensed Mickey Thompson Baja Boss M/T 2.2 tyres that stand 5.5 inches tall, providing authentic scale appearance and aggressive traction. Wheels are officially licensed Raceline Avenger 2.2 with classic 8-spoke design. This combination delivers both realistic trail buggy aesthetics and the grip needed to conquer extreme terrain.
  • Can I upgrade the ASD system to the front axle? — Yes. Axial designed the front AF16P axle to be ASD-compatible, and the AT6 transmission also accepts optional ASD setups. These upgrades allow even greater control and are available separately for those wanting to expand the Gilamon's capabilities beyond its rear-axle ASD setup.
  • Is the Spektrum DX3 radio easy to use? — The DX3 is one of Spektrum's most user-friendly transmitters, with clear menus and straightforward operation. It features Smart technology compatibility so you can monitor battery voltage directly on the screen when paired with a Spektrum Smart LiPo. The radio arrives pre-paired and ready to go—no complex binding procedures required.
  • What is the motor type and what kind of power does it deliver? — The Gilamon features an Axial Boulder 550 brushed motor with 21 turns. This oversized design is longer than typical 540 motors, delivering more torque and greater durability specifically calibrated for rock crawling demands. The brushed system pairs perfectly with the Firma 70A ESC for smooth, controllable power ideal for technical trail work.
  • Are the electronics waterproof? — Yes. All Spektrum on-board electronics are waterproof-rated, making this ready-to-run RC buggy suitable for crawling in wet conditions, mud, and streams. However, avoid full submersion and always rinse with fresh water after wet conditions to preserve electronics longevity.
