Overview
Upgrade your Axial AXP8 Gilamon 2.2 4X4 RC buggy with the AXIAL Steering Axle, Assembled, AF16P portal axle unit. This high-quality assembled steering axle brings genuine four-wheel steering capability to your ready-to-run RC car UK setup, transforming handling characteristics and opening up new possibilities for terrain negotiation and manoeuvrability. Whether you're a seasoned RC enthusiast or discovering the world of RC buggies for the first time, adding true 4WD steering transforms your off-road experience with improved cornering performance and responsiveness across varied terrain.
The AF16P portal axle assembly represents Axial's commitment to quality drivetrain engineering. This is not a basic modification—it's a complete, factory-assembled steering axle unit ready for installation on compatible Axial platforms. Portal axles elevate the chassis height whilst maintaining low centre of gravity benefits, crucial for serious rock crawlers and trail bashers alike. The assembled configuration means you receive a ready-to-install component that's been precision-built and tested by the manufacturer, eliminating assembly errors and ensuring consistent performance from day one.
Four-wheel steering fundamentally changes how your RC crawler behaves. Rather than relying solely on front-wheel steering like conventional two-wheel drive RC cars, 4WD steering allows both front and rear axles to articulate, dramatically reducing turning radius and improving traction in technical terrain. This is particularly valuable for owners of the Axial AXP8 Gilamon 2.2 models who want to maximise their vehicle's capabilities and enjoy advanced trail driving techniques not possible with standard axle configurations.
Key Features
- AF16P Portal Axle Design — This is a genuine portal axle unit featuring elevated mounting geometry that raises the chassis whilst maintaining optimal weight distribution. Portal axles provide superior ground clearance over obstacles and rough terrain, essential for serious RC trail driving and rock crawling where clearance directly impacts your ability to traverse technical sections without damage.
- Four-Wheel Steering Capability — The assembled steering axle enables true 4WD steering functionality when installed on compatible vehicles, allowing both front and rear axles to turn in coordination. This revolutionary handling improvement enables tighter turning circles, enhanced agility through obstacles, and superior performance in confined spaces where standard two-wheel steering would struggle.
- Factory-Assembled Construction — You receive this steering axle completely assembled from Axial, eliminating the need for time-consuming component assembly and ensuring factory-precision fitment. This assembled approach guarantees quality control and means you can install this component with confidence, knowing it meets manufacturer specifications.
- Compatible with Axial AXP8 Gilamon 2.2 Models — Specifically engineered for the Axial 1/8 AXP8 Gilamon 2.2 4X4 RTR Brushed Trail Buggy platforms, this steering axle integrates seamlessly with these brushed electric RC buggies. Whether you own the red or green variant of the Gilamon 2.2, this component is engineered as a direct replacement to add steering functionality to your rear axle.
- Genuine Axial OEM Component — This is an authorised original equipment manufacturer part manufactured by Axial, guaranteeing compatibility, durability and performance consistency with your Axial vehicle. Using genuine OEM parts ensures longevity and maintains the engineering integrity of your RC model.
- Enhanced Trail Performance — Four-wheel steering dramatically improves performance on technical terrain, rock gardens, and tight trail sections where reduced turning radius and improved articulation make the difference between clean runs and getting hung up on obstacles. This is the upgrade serious trail drivers choose.
Technical Performance
The AXIAL Steering Axle AF16P represents advanced portal axle engineering designed specifically for 1/8 scale RC trail buggies and rock crawlers. Portal axles function by mounting the driveline above the wheel hub rather than through the centre, a design that simultaneously increases ground clearance and lowers the overall centre of gravity—a seemingly contradictory benefit that makes portal axles the gold standard for serious off-road RC performance. The assembled configuration means all internal components, bearings, seals, and drivetrain elements are pre-assembled, tested, and ready for installation. This eliminates assembly variables and ensures you receive a component engineered to factory specifications. The AF16P specifically adds steering capability to the rear axle assembly, transforming your Axial AXP8 Gilamon 2.2 from a standard two-wheel steer platform into a genuine four-wheel steer machine. In practical terms, this means both the front and rear axles articulate together, dramatically reducing your vehicle's turning radius—useful not only on rock crawl courses but also when navigating technical trail sections, tight canyon passages, or obstacle courses where manoeuvrability directly impacts success. The portal axle design also provides measurably improved ground clearance over standard axle designs, crucial when traversing rock gardens and technical terrain where bumping into obstacles can cause mechanical damage or loss of traction. The steering functionality adds a layer of driving technique previously impossible with conventional axle designs, allowing experienced drivers to execute precise line choices and recovery techniques that separate skilled pilots from casual bashers. Built using quality materials and precision manufacturing consistent with Axial's reputation in the RC hobby, this assembled axle will handle the demands of serious trail driving, from casual weekend bashing to competitive rock crawl events.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What is four-wheel steering and why is it better than two-wheel steering? — Four-wheel steering means both the front and rear axles turn in coordination, allowing your RC buggy to achieve a dramatically tighter turning radius than vehicles with only front-wheel steering. This is particularly valuable on technical terrain where the ability to point your vehicle in different directions whilst maintaining traction—rather than sliding sideways—gives you precise control over line choice and improves your ability to navigate obstacles. Two-wheel steering RC cars can only turn via the front axle, limiting manoeuvrability in confined spaces and on technical courses.
- Is this suitable for beginners? — The AXIAL Steering Axle is best suited for experienced RC enthusiasts who already own an Axial AXP8 Gilamon 2.2 and want to upgrade to four-wheel steering capability. This is an advanced modification rather than a beginner component—it requires installation knowledge and is most rewarding for drivers who understand rock crawling and trail driving techniques. However, if you own a compatible Gilamon 2.2 and want to unlock advanced capabilities in your ready-to-run RC car, this is the component to choose.
- What vehicles is this compatible with? — This AXIAL Steering Axle is specifically engineered for the Axial 1/8 AXP8 Gilamon 2.2 4X4 RTR Brushed Trail Buggy, available in both red and green variants. These are brushed electric RC buggies, and this steering axle assembly integrates directly with their drivetrain and suspension geometry.
- Do I need any additional parts to install this steering axle? — The assembled steering axle arrives ready to install on compatible vehicles. Depending on your specific modification goals and current setup, you may need additional servo linkage components or steering control electronics to fully utilise four-wheel steering functionality, but the axle assembly itself is complete and self-contained.
- What is a portal axle and why do trail drivers prefer them? — A portal axle is a drive system where the motor and gearbox sit above the wheel hub rather than through the centre. This design simultaneously raises ground clearance (improving obstacle navigation) and lowers the vehicle's centre of gravity (improving stability). Portal axles are preferred by rock crawlers and trail drivers because they deliver superior performance over traditional axle designs, particularly on technical terrain where clearance and stability directly impact your ability to complete challenging courses.
- Is this a genuine Axial part? — Yes, this is a genuine Axial OEM component manufactured by Axial as part of their official parts programme. The part number Z-AXI-2206 and EAN 0660132627270 confirm authenticity, and purchasing from authorised retailers like RC Model Shop ensures you receive genuine Axial components with full manufacturer support.
