Overview

The Traxxas Spur 54-tooth gear (0.8 metric pitch, compatible with 32-pitch) is an essential drivetrain component for RC enthusiasts looking to optimise their vehicle's performance. Whether you're running a Traxxas Slash 4x4 or another compatible model, this precision-engineered spur gear allows you to fine-tune acceleration and top speed to match your specific driving conditions and preferences. For anyone serious about RC car UK performance tuning, spur gear selection is one of the most effective and affordable ways to dramatically alter how your vehicle behaves on the track or trail.

Traxxas spur gears are manufactured to exacting standards, ensuring reliable engagement with your pinion gear and smooth power delivery under demanding conditions. This 54-tooth variant represents a popular middle-ground option that works exceptionally well for balanced running in most conditions. Whether you're a seasoned basher optimising your ready to run RC car or a racer dialling in lap times, understanding gear ratios and how to swap components like this spur gear is a fundamental skill in the RC hobby.

This genuine Traxxas spare part is designed to work seamlessly with the #6814 centre differential, making it an ideal upgrade or replacement for Traxxas Slash 4x4 owners. By changing your spur gear ratio, you can shift the balance of your vehicle's performance profile to prioritise either quick acceleration for tight courses or higher top speed for open-track running. RC Model Shop stocks the full range of Traxxas genuine spares and drivetrain components, so you can always find exactly what you need to keep your model running at peak performance.

Key Features

  • 54-tooth precision spur gear — This mid-range tooth count provides an excellent balance between acceleration and top speed, making it suitable for most driving conditions and the most commonly chosen option for general-purpose RC car tuning in the UK and beyond.
  • 32-pitch compatible design — The gear is manufactured to 32-pitch specification with 0.8 metric pitch dimensions, ensuring perfect compatibility with standard Traxxas drivetrain components and seamless meshing with your pinion gear for smooth, efficient power transfer.
  • Works with #6814 centre differential — This spur gear is specifically designed to function with the Traxxas 6814 centre differential, making it an ideal choice for Slash 4x4 models and other vehicles equipped with this differential unit.
  • Performance tuning capability — By swapping your spur gear, you can instantly adjust the gear ratio of your vehicle, allowing you to balance acceleration and top speed depending on whether you're running tight indoor tracks, open outdoor terrain, or competitive racing courses.
  • Genuine Traxxas quality — As an official Traxxas spare part, this spur gear is manufactured to the same rigorous standards as the rest of your model, ensuring durability, precise tooth engagement, and reliable performance under racing and bashing conditions alike.
  • Easy installation — Replacing a spur gear is straightforward and requires only basic tools, making it an accessible upgrade for RC enthusiasts of all experience levels who want to experiment with gearing options.

Technical Performance

The Traxxas 54-tooth spur gear represents years of engineering refinement in RC drivetrain design. Manufactured from hardened steel, this component is engineered to withstand the constant meshing forces generated during acceleration, cornering, and sustained high-speed running. The 32-pitch specification (0.8 metric pitch) is the industry standard for 1/10 scale RC vehicles, ensuring compatibility with a vast range of Traxxas models and aftermarket components available to UK RC enthusiasts. The tooth profile is precision-cut to maintain consistent engagement with your pinion gear, minimising backlash and maximising power transfer efficiency. When paired with different pinion gear sizes, this 54-tooth spur allows you to create custom gear ratios that directly influence your vehicle's acceleration curve and maximum velocity. For example, a larger pinion gear meshed with this 54-tooth spur will favour top speed, whilst a smaller pinion will prioritise acceleration off the line. Understanding gear ratios is essential for serious RC car UK bashers and racers, and having multiple spur gears in your spares box allows you to quickly adapt your setup to different track layouts, weather conditions, and driving styles. The hardened steel construction resists wear and tooth stripping, ensuring that your investment in drivetrain tuning pays dividends through extended component lifespan and reliable performance.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What does a spur gear do in an RC car? — The spur gear is the main drivetrain component that transfers power from your motor to the wheels through the transmission. By changing the number of teeth on your spur gear, you alter the overall gear ratio of your vehicle, which directly affects acceleration, top speed, and how your motor sounds under load. A larger spur gear (more teeth) gives more torque and acceleration but sacrifices top speed, whilst a smaller spur gear provides higher top speed but slower acceleration.
  • Will this 54-tooth spur gear fit my Traxxas model? — This spur gear is specifically designed for Traxxas models equipped with the #6814 centre differential, particularly the Slash 4x4. Before purchasing, consult your vehicle's owner's manual to confirm compatibility with your specific model. Most modern Traxxas 1/10 scale vehicles use 32-pitch gears like this one, but it's always worth double-checking your current setup.
  • What's the difference between a 54-tooth, 48-tooth, and 60-tooth spur gear? — The tooth count directly determines the gear ratio when paired with a pinion gear. A 54-tooth spur is a middle-ground option. A smaller spur (like 48-tooth) will increase top speed at the expense of acceleration, whilst a larger spur (like 60-tooth) will improve acceleration but cap your maximum velocity. The 54-tooth is perfect for general-purpose running and is the most popular choice for UK RC enthusiasts.
  • How often should I replace my spur gear? — With proper maintenance and reasonable driving, a high-quality steel spur gear like this Traxxas unit should last many hours of running. However, if you notice stripped teeth, grinding noises, or excessive backlash, it's time to swap in a replacement. Regular inspection is part of responsible RC car ownership.
  • What is metric pitch and 32-pitch? — Pitch refers to the spacing between gear teeth. This spur uses 0.8 metric pitch (also referred to as 32-pitch), which is the standard specification for 1/10 scale RC vehicles. You must match the pitch of your spur gear to your pinion gear to ensure proper meshing and performance.
  • Is this suitable for beginners? — Yes, absolutely. Whilst gear ratio tuning can seem technical, the physical act of swapping a spur gear is beginner-friendly. If you're new to RC cars, starting with a 54-tooth spur is an excellent choice as it offers balanced performance. Your vehicle's manual will guide you through the installation process step by step.
  • Where can I find recommended gearing options for my specific model? — Traxxas publishes detailed gearing recommendations in each model's owner's manual. These recommendations vary based on track type, surface conditions, and your driving style. RC Model Shop staff can also provide expert advice on the best gear ratios for your intended use.
