Overview
The Team Losi Racing Narrow Gear Set, Laydown Idler, Diff (2): 22 4.0 SR is a precision-engineered replacement gear set designed for competitive 1/10 scale 2WD buggy racing. This component is essential for racers and enthusiasts who demand the highest performance from their RC car UK setups, whether competing on carpet or clay tracks. As an optional upgrade part, this narrow gear configuration allows you to fine-tune your vehicle's performance characteristics to suit specific racing conditions and driving styles.
Team Losi Racing is renowned throughout the RC hobby for producing competition-grade components that deliver reliability and performance on the track. This particular gear set represents years of engineering expertise focused on 22-class 4.0 buggy platforms. Whether you're piloting a TLR22 5.0 2WD buggy on an astro carpet track or taking on dirt and clay surfaces, this gear set provides the foundation for consistent, predictable handling and power delivery that serious racers depend on.
The laydown idler configuration combined with the narrow gear arrangement offers specific advantages for drivers seeking to optimise their drivetrain setup. This is not a complete ready to run RC car, but rather a critical replacement or upgrade component for those who already own compatible Team Losi Racing 1/10 scale 2WD buggies and are looking to extract maximum performance from their competitive racing platform.
Key Features
- Narrow Gear Configuration — The narrow gear set design reduces rotating mass and decreases overall friction in the drivetrain, which translates to improved efficiency, faster acceleration response, and better power transfer from motor to wheels for more responsive handling characteristics.
- Laydown Idler Design — The laydown idler component is engineered to maintain optimal gear mesh and alignment, ensuring smooth power delivery without bind or slop in the drivetrain, which is critical for maintaining consistency during competitive racing on both indoor carpet and outdoor dirt tracks.
- Differential (2) Included — This set includes two differentials, providing complete drivetrain components necessary for comprehensive setup tuning and allowing you to experiment with different differential configurations to match your driving style and track conditions.
- 22 4.0 Compatibility — Specifically engineered for Team Losi Racing 22-class vehicles running the 4.0 platform, ensuring perfect fitment and performance integration with your existing race-spec buggy setup.
- Competition-Grade Engineering — Built to Team Losi Racing's exacting standards for precision and durability, these components are trusted by competitive racers worldwide who demand parts that can withstand the demands of serious off-road racing.
- Optional Upgrade Status — Available as replacement or upgrade parts for the TLR03017, TLR03016, TLR03022, and TLR03018 models, giving you flexibility to modify and optimise your specific buggy configuration.
Technical Performance
This gear set represents precision engineering tailored for 1/10 scale 2WD buggy racing, where drivetrain efficiency and reliability directly impact competitive performance. The narrow gear arrangement combined with the laydown idler configuration creates a drivetrain setup that minimises friction and rotating mass whilst maintaining optimal gear engagement and mesh quality. Team Losi Racing's engineering focuses on delivering components that work seamlessly with brushless motor systems typical of modern RC car UK racing platforms, ensuring smooth power application from standstill acceleration through to top-end speed maintenance. The inclusion of dual differentials allows racers to select and configure the exact differential setup that matches their preferred driving technique and track characteristics, whether that's maximum traction on slippery surfaces or reduced traction for more controlled, predictable cornering on prepared clay and carpet circuits. The laydown idler maintains precise alignment between motor pinion and spur gear, preventing the binding and power loss that can occur with worn or misaligned drivetrain components. These components are manufactured to tolerances that meet international racing standards and have been proven through countless hours of competitive racing across multiple continents.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What Team Losi Racing buggies is this gear set compatible with? — This narrow gear set with laydown idler is engineered for the TLR03017 1/10 22 5.0 2WD Buggy AC Race Kit, the TLR03016 1/10 22 5.0 2WD Buggy DC Race Kit, the TLR03022 1/10 22 5.0 2WD DC ELITE Race Kit, and the TLR03018 1/10 22 5.0 2WD Spec Racing Kit. It functions as an optional replacement or upgrade part for these specific models.
- Will this gear set improve my buggy's performance? — Yes, upgrading to a narrow gear configuration with an optimised laydown idler can improve drivetrain efficiency, reduce friction losses, and provide more responsive acceleration and handling characteristics, particularly if you're replacing worn or non-optimal original components on your RC buggy UK setup.
- Is this suitable for beginners? — This is a competition-grade component intended for racers and advanced hobbyists who understand drivetrain tuning and setup optimisation. Beginners should first master their current buggy setup before exploring gear configuration changes, as these components require proper installation and adjustment to realise their performance benefits.
- What tools and skills do I need to install this? — Installation requires mechanical knowledge of RC car drivetrain systems, appropriate hex keys and specialist tools for drivetrain work, and understanding of gear mesh measurement and adjustment. It's recommended that installation be performed by someone with experience working on competitive RC buggies or under guidance from experienced team members.
- How often will I need to replace this gear set? — With proper maintenance, regular cleaning, and appropriate lubrication, this gear set should provide extended service life. Replacement frequency depends on racing intensity, track conditions, and maintenance practices, but competition racers may replace components regularly to maintain optimal performance.
- What is the difference between narrow and standard gear configurations? — Narrow gear sets reduce rotating mass and decrease friction in the drivetrain compared to standard configurations, resulting in faster acceleration response and improved efficiency, though some drivers prefer the characteristics of standard wider gear arrangements depending on track conditions and driving style.
