Overview

The FTX Mauler 14t 48dp Motor Pinion Gear is an essential replacement and upgrade component for owners of FTX Mauler 2.0 4x4 rock crawlers. This precision-engineered pinion gear is designed to deliver reliable performance in demanding off-road RC applications, whether you're a seasoned RC car enthusiast in the UK or someone discovering the world of electric RC rock crawling for the first time. As a critical drivetrain component, the motor pinion gear plays a vital role in transferring power from your brushless motor to the main gearbox, making it one of the most important parts you can upgrade or maintain on your RC crawler.

FTX has engineered this 14-tooth pinion gear to exacting standards, ensuring compatibility with FTX Mauler 2.0 4x4 rock crawler models whilst delivering the precision fit and durability that serious RC enthusiasts demand. Whether you're replacing a worn gear, experimenting with different gearing ratios to fine-tune your crawler's performance, or building a new Mauler 2.0 from scratch, this pinion gear represents genuine OEM quality from one of the UK's most respected RC manufacturers. The 48dp pitch specification ensures compatibility with standard motor shafts and gearbox arrangements on the Mauler platform, giving you confidence that this component will integrate seamlessly with your existing setup.

Available in stock at RC Model Shop, the FTX Mauler pinion gear offers excellent value for money and represents a genuine investment in your RC rock crawler's longevity and performance. Pinion gears are wear items that benefit from regular replacement, particularly if you're running your RC crawler hard in competitive settings or challenging terrain. Having spare pinions on hand ensures you're never sidelined during a driving session, and changing gearing ratios opens up new possibilities for tuning your crawler's acceleration, top speed, and low-end torque characteristics.

Key Features

  • 14-Tooth Pinion Configuration — This tooth count is specifically engineered for the FTX Mauler 2.0 rock crawler platform, providing the optimal balance between acceleration and top speed for crawling and general off-road use. A 14-tooth pinion represents a proven gearing solution that delivers responsive acceleration without sacrificing reliability or efficiency.
  • 48 Diametral Pitch (48dp) Specification — The 48dp rating ensures precise engagement with standard gearbox teeth on FTX Mauler drivetrains, delivering smooth power transfer and minimising backlash during operation. This pitch specification is the industry standard for 1/10 scale RC vehicles and ensures compatibility across the FTX Mauler platform.
  • 3.2mm Bore Diameter — The precisely machined 3.2mm bore accommodates standard motor shafts found on FTX Mauler 2.0 motors, providing a secure, wobble-free connection that's essential for reliable performance during high-stress rock crawling sessions.
  • Precision Engineering — FTX manufactures this pinion gear to tight tolerances, ensuring consistent mesh quality and long service life. Premium materials and strict quality control mean you're getting a professional-grade component, not a budget alternative.
  • Genuine OEM Component — As an official FTX part, this pinion gear is designed and tested to work perfectly with FTX Mauler 2.0 4x4 rock crawler models, giving you complete confidence in compatibility and performance.

Technical Performance

The FTX Mauler 14t 48dp Motor Pinion Gear represents genuine precision engineering for serious RC rock crawler enthusiasts. With a bore diameter of exactly 3.2mm, this pinion gear delivers rock-solid mounting on standard FTX motor shafts, eliminating any possibility of slipping or wobbling during demanding crawling operations. The 48 diametral pitch specification is the industry standard for 1/10 scale RC vehicles, ensuring perfect mesh engagement with the main gearbox. The 14-tooth count strikes an excellent balance for rock crawling applications, providing sufficient torque multiplication for climbing obstacles whilst maintaining reasonable top speeds on open terrain. This is a wear item that benefits from regular replacement, particularly in competitive or high-frequency use scenarios. Whether you're running on loose gravel, rocky hillsides, or technical course obstacles, a fresh pinion gear ensures smooth power delivery and eliminates any potential for gear slop or missed shifts. The precision manufacturing process employed by FTX ensures consistent tooth geometry across the entire gear face, which is critical for minimising noise, reducing vibration, and maximising drivetrain efficiency. For rock crawlers where control and responsiveness are paramount, investing in genuine OEM pinion gears like this one represents a small but significant investment in your vehicle's overall performance and longevity.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is a motor pinion gear and why do I need to replace it? — The motor pinion gear is a small toothed component that sits on the motor shaft and meshes with the main gearbox. It's responsible for transferring power from your electric motor to the drivetrain. Over time, particularly with regular use or high-stress driving, pinion gears wear down and can develop flat spots or chipped teeth. Replacing a worn pinion gear restores smooth power delivery and prevents potential damage to your gearbox. Additionally, pinion gears with different tooth counts can be swapped to adjust your crawler's gearing ratio for different driving styles or terrain types.
  • Is this pinion gear suitable for my FTX Mauler 2.0 rock crawler? — Yes, this is the genuine FTX OEM pinion gear designed specifically for FTX Mauler 2.0 4x4 rock crawler models in both yellow and red colour options. The 3.2mm bore fits standard FTX Mauler motors perfectly, and the 48dp pitch ensures seamless engagement with the main gearbox teeth.
  • How often should I replace my pinion gear? — This depends entirely on your usage patterns. If you're running your RC rock crawler regularly in competitive settings or challenging terrain, you might want to replace the pinion gear every few months or even more frequently. Weekend bashers who run their crawlers casually might only need replacement every year or so. It's a good practice to carry a spare pinion gear in your pit bag so you're never caught without one during a driving session.
  • Can I change the tooth count to adjust my crawler's performance? — Yes! Different pinion tooth counts will change your gearing ratio and thus your crawler's acceleration and top speed characteristics. A higher tooth count (more teeth) will give you more acceleration but lower top speed, whilst a lower tooth count will reduce torque multiplication but increase top speed. The standard 14-tooth pinion is a balanced choice for rock crawling, but you can experiment with different counts depending on your terrain and driving preferences.
  • How do I install a new pinion gear? — Installation involves removing your motor from the crawler, sliding off the old pinion gear, and carefully sliding the new one onto the motor shaft. You'll want to ensure it sits flush against the motor's shaft shoulder and rotates freely without any wobble. Most users secure it with the original grub screw or fastener. If you're unsure about installation, consult your FTX Mauler manual or seek advice from experienced RC users in the UK RC community.
  • What makes FTX's pinion gears different from aftermarket alternatives? — FTX's genuine OEM components are manufactured to the exact specifications required for perfect compatibility with Mauler drivetrains. They're produced to strict tolerances using premium materials, ensuring consistent quality and long service life. Aftermarket gears might be cheaper initially, but genuine components provide the reliability and performance you can count on.
