Technical Performance
The Traxxas Titan 550 Brushed Motor (21-Turn) is a masterclass in applied engineering for recreational and competitive RC use. Operating at up to 14.4 volts — matching standard 4S LiPo battery configurations — this 550-size motor delivers the kind of sustained power delivery that serious RC enthusiasts demand. The 21-turn configuration strikes an intelligent balance: more turns than radical modified motors mean slightly lower top-end speed but substantially better torque throughout the power band, making acceleration feel responsive and maintaining drive through rough terrain. The motor's bore diameter of 3.2mm ensures precise engineering tolerances and optimal rotor balance for smooth, vibration-free operation. What genuinely sets this motor apart is the engineering philosophy behind its thermal management. The integrated cooling fan isn't merely aesthetic — it's a functional system that continuously extracts heat from the motor housing, keeping operating temperatures down during extended play sessions. This active cooling enables faster sustained speeds because the motor maintains more consistent electrical and mechanical efficiency across a wider temperature range, you'll experience longer runtime per battery because heat-related efficiency losses are minimised, and perhaps most importantly, you'll get extended motor life because sustained high temperatures are a primary cause of bearing wear, brush degradation, and magnet demagnetisation in brushed motors. The 30% longer armature is particularly significant: it increases the magnetic circuit volume and winding capacity, directly translating to more torque available across the entire RPM range. This means your E-Maxx or E-Revo will accelerate harder from standstill, maintain drive better when climbing, and feel more planted and controlled during aggressive manoeuvres. For UK RC car owners running on grass, dirt, or gravel venues, this torque-focused design prevents the frustrating loss of drive on uneven ground that plagues underpowered setups. The brushed motor design brings practical advantages too: brushed motors are inherently simpler electrically, making them compatible with a broader range of ESC units, and they're renowned in the hobby for forgiving operation under varied load conditions — perfect for the real-world chaos of bashing where voltage sag, temperature fluctuations, and unexpected impacts are part of the experience.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What is a 21-turn brushed motor and why does the turn count matter? — The "turn count" refers to how many times the copper wire is wound around each pole of the motor's armature. A 21-turn motor has more windings than a 12-turn modified motor, which increases electrical resistance slightly but dramatically increases torque throughout the power band. For RC users, a 21-turn configuration means better acceleration from standstill, more sustained drive when climbing or traversing rough terrain, and more forgiving operation across varying load conditions. If you want maximum top speed, lower turn counts are faster; if you want maximum usable torque and hill-climbing ability, higher turn counts deliver more practical performance.
- Is the Traxxas Titan 550 suitable for beginners? — The Titan 550 is suitable for beginners who already own a compatible RC vehicle (E-Maxx or E-Revo) and understand the basics of battery, ESC, and motor systems. This is a motor component, not a complete ready-to-run RC car, so you'll need foundational knowledge of RC systems. However, once installed, the motor's virtually maintenance-free operation and forgiving brushed design make it excellent for operators of any skill level — beginners benefit from its reliability and predictable power delivery, whilst experienced bashers appreciate its torque-focused performance characteristics.
- What voltage battery does the Titan 550 need and what's the maximum safe voltage? — The Traxxas Titan 550 is designed to operate safely at up to 14.4 volts, which corresponds to a 4S LiPo battery (4 cells × 3.7V nominal = 14.8V nominal, with a fresh charge reaching approximately 16.8V peak). Traxxas specifically recommends using this motor in single-motor, single-battery configurations, not dual-motor vehicles. The motor is not recommended for use in E-Maxx vehicles, which typically feature dual motors — instead, it's designed for single-motor platforms like the standard E-Maxx configurations or E-Revo models. Always verify your specific vehicle configuration before selection.
- How does the integrated cooling fan improve real-world performance? — During extended play sessions, brushed motors naturally generate heat as friction increases electrical resistance in the windings and armature. Traditional motors without active cooling experience temperature rise that reduces efficiency: the windings develop increased resistance (making the motor work harder), the brushes wear faster (creating more friction and heat), and bearing lubrication can degrade. The Traxxas Titan 550's integrated cooling fan actively pulls ambient air through the motor housing, continuously removing heat. In practical terms, you'll notice your motor staying cooler to the touch between runs, your vehicle maintaining more consistent performance throughout a battery cycle (instead of gradually losing power as temperatures rise), and your motor lasting significantly longer before requiring maintenance or replacement.
- Why is the 30% longer armature significant? — The armature is the rotating component of the motor where the windings sit and where magnetic interaction occurs. A 30% longer armature means more physical space for copper wire windings and a larger magnetic circuit. This translates directly to increased torque across the entire RPM range — your vehicle will feel more responsive from standstill, accelerate harder under load, maintain drive better when climbing obstacles or traversing rough ground, and feel more planted during aggressive manoeuvres. For UK RC bashers running on grass or dirt, this means better grip and less likelihood of losing drive on uneven surfaces.
- What's the difference between a brushed motor and a brushless motor for RC use? — Brushed motors (like the Titan 550) use carbon brushes that physically contact the commutator to deliver electrical power to the rotating windings. Brushless motors use electronic commutation via an ESC to achieve the same effect without brushes. Brushed motors are simpler electrically, compatible with more ESC types, more forgiving under varying load and voltage conditions, and excellent for recreational bashing. Brushless motors offer higher theoretical efficiency and maximum RPM, but require more sophisticated ESC electronics and are less forgiving of voltage sag. For recreational RC use, brushed motors like the Titan 550 offer more practical, dependable performance.
- Is this motor compatible with my E-Maxx or E-Revo? — The Traxxas Titan 550 is specifically designed for use in E-Maxx and E-Revo vehicles. However, Traxxas explicitly does not recommend using Titan 12-turn motors in dual-motor vehicles like certain E-Maxx configurations. Before purchasing, verify whether your specific E-Maxx or E-Revo is a single-motor or dual-motor setup. For dual-motor vehicles, you would need two compatible motors. Always check your vehicle documentation or contact Traxxas support to confirm your exact configuration.
- What connector type does this motor use and will it fit my ESC? — The Traxxas Titan 550 arrives pre-fitted with standard Bullet connectors, which are the industry-standard small-diameter connectors for brushed motors. Bullet connectors are widely compatible with most quality RC ESC units and battery connectors. However, always verify that your specific ESC features matching Bullet connector receptacles. If your ESC uses a different connector type (such as Deans, Anderson, or XT60), you'll need to either replace the motor connectors or use an adapter harness.
