Technical Performance
The Hobbywing Skywalker 40A V2 is engineered to deliver exceptional performance across a range of RC aircraft applications. With a continuous current rating of 40 amps and peak current handling of 60 amps, this ESC is well-suited to mid-range electric RC planes, training aircraft, and sport flyers looking for reliable, responsive control. The unit accepts 3S to 4S LiPo battery inputs (11.1V to 14.8V), making it compatible with the most popular battery configurations among RC aircraft builders across the UK. The built-in BEC (Battery Eliminator Circuit) provides regulated 5V output at 5 amps in linear mode, delivering sufficient power to operate servos, receivers, and auxiliary systems without requiring a separate battery.
Construction quality is evident in every detail. The ESC features premium 14 AWG red and black input wires at 100mm length, terminated with 3.5mm gold connectors for secure, low-resistance connections to your flight battery. Three output wires in 16 AWG thickness at 75mm length connect directly to your brushless motor with reliable 3.5mm bullet connectors. The compact dimensions of just 60 x 25 x 8mm and lightweight 36-gram construction make this ESC ideal for weight-conscious aircraft designs where every gram counts. The unit's small footprint allows easy integration into fuselages, wing pods, or nacelles without compromising aerodynamics or balance.
The Skywalker 40A V2 operates at speeds up to 300,000 RPM with 2-pole motors, providing the range and flexibility needed for everything from leisurely cruising aircraft to more spirited aerobatic performers. The combination of DEO Technology and active freewheeling ensures that energy from your battery is used efficiently, translated directly into longer flight times and reduced operating temperatures that enhance overall reliability. Whether you're operating in calm conditions or handling moderate wind, the responsive throttle characteristics and stable power delivery of this ESC provide the control and confidence needed for enjoyable, safe flights.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Is the Hobbywing Skywalker 40A V2 suitable for beginners learning to fly RC planes? — Yes, the Skywalker 40A V2 is an excellent choice for beginners. The straightforward programming via LED Program Card or transmitter makes setup simple, whilst the multiple protection features including throttle signal loss detection (Fail Safe) and low voltage cutoff provide important safety safeguards. The smooth, responsive throttle characteristics help new pilots develop good flying technique and build confidence. If you're just starting with brushless RC aircraft, this ESC will serve you reliably as you develop your skills.
- What battery does the Skywalker 40A V2 require, and how many cells? — The Skywalker 40A V2 accepts 3S and 4S LiPo batteries, meaning you can use either 3-cell (11.1V) or 4-cell (14.8V) lithium polymer battery packs. The 40-amp continuous rating means you should select a battery with sufficient discharge capacity (measured in C-rating) for your motor size. For most mid-range aircraft applications, a 2200-5000 mAh battery with at least 25C discharge rating will provide good flight duration and reliable performance.
- How does the Skywalker 40A V2 compare to other ESCs in the Skywalker V2 range? — Hobbywing manufactures several versions of the Skywalker V2 with different current ratings. The 40A model sits in the mid-range: it's more powerful than the 30A version for larger or faster aircraft, but less expensive and physically smaller than the 50A, 60A, 80A, or 100A variants. The 40A model is also rated for 3-4S batteries, whilst larger variants accept up to 6S. Choose the 40A if your motor requires between 25-40 amps continuous current; step up to higher ratings only if your specific aircraft design demands more power.
- What does DEO Technology mean, and why should I care? — DEO stands for Driving Efficiency Optimization. This proprietary Hobbywing technology improves how the ESC converts electrical power from your battery into mechanical rotation of your motor. Benefits include smoother throttle response (important for stable flight), better energy efficiency (meaning longer flight times from each battery charge), and lower heat generation (improving reliability and extending component life). In practical terms, aircraft equipped with Skywalker V2 ESCs featuring DEO Technology fly longer, more smoothly, and more reliably than older ESC designs.
- Can I programme the Skywalker 40A V2 myself, or do I need specialist equipment? — The Skywalker 40A V2 can be programmed in multiple ways. The easiest method is using the included LED Program Card, which allows you to adjust key parameters like rotation direction, throttle response, and brake settings. Alternatively, you can programme the ESC directly through your RC transmitter if your transmitter supports ESC programming. For advanced features, Hobbywing offers the optional LED Program Box (sold separately) which provides more comprehensive programming options. You do not need a computer to programme this ESC.
- What is the Search Mode feature, and when would I use it? — Search Mode is an innovative feature that helps locate aircraft that have crashed or landed in difficult terrain. When activated, the ESC causes the motor to pulse and beep at regular intervals, creating audible and tactile signals that make finding your aircraft much easier, especially in long grass, vegetation, or low-light conditions. This can literally save hundreds of pounds by preventing permanent loss of valuable aircraft. The feature can also be set to automatically disconnect the battery after a period of non-use, protecting your LiPo from over-discharge damage.
- Are there any safety protections built into this ESC? — Yes, the Skywalker 40A V2 includes comprehensive safety features: abnormal input voltage protection safeguards against battery connection errors, ESC thermal protection shuts down the motor if the ESC overheats, throttle signal loss detection (Fail Safe) reverts to a safe throttle position if your RC signal is lost, and low voltage cutoff prevents over-discharge of your LiPo battery which would damage the cells. These protections work together to keep you, your aircraft, and your equipment safe.
- What size aircraft and motor is this ESC suitable for? — The 40-amp rating makes the Skywalker 40A V2 suitable for a wide range of aircraft from small park flyers (under 1kg) through to larger trainer and sport aircraft (up to roughly 3-4kg depending on motor choice). The ESC's maximum 300,000 RPM capability on 2-pole motors means it pairs well with inrunner motors up to roughly 5000KV, or outrunner motors in the 2000-4000KV range, though specific pairing depends on your individual aircraft design and performance goals.
- Is this ESC waterproof or suitable for outdoor flying in wet conditions? — Whilst the Skywalker 40A V2 features solid construction and quality components, it is not specifically rated as waterproof or submersible. The electronics should be protected from direct water immersion; however, light rain exposure during normal outdoor RC flying should not cause problems if the ESC is mounted in a reasonably protected location within your aircraft fuselage. For seaplane or water-based aircraft applications, consult Hobbywing directly regarding waterproofing options.
- How much do replacement parts cost, and where can I find them? — The Skywalker 40A V2 is a repairable component, and Hobbywing supplies the unit with standard connectors (3.5mm gold connectors for battery, 3.5mm bullets for motor output) that are widely available across the UK RC hobby market. If you damage the ESC beyond repair, replacement units are readily available from authorised UK retailers like RC Model Shop at competitive prices.
