Key Features
- Custom 540 Steel Case with Chrome-Plated Finish — The motor housing is constructed from quality steel and finished with a durable chrome plating, providing corrosion resistance and a professional appearance whilst maintaining structural integrity through demanding off-road use.
- Built-In Capacitor to Minimise Glitches — A capacitor is integrated into the motor design to reduce electrical interference and glitching, ensuring clean power delivery to your ESC and providing more stable, predictable performance during technical rock crawling sequences.
- High-Torque Magnet and Rotor — The motor features a high-torque magnet assembly paired with a precision rotor, delivering the responsive torque characteristics essential for low-speed control and the ability to power through obstacles without losing traction or stalling.
- Pre-Wired with 3 mm Bullet Connectors — Installation is straightforward with factory-installed 3 mm bullet connectors, allowing for quick connection to compatible ESCs and reducing the need for soldering or crimping (though Axial ESCs with 4 mm connectors can be adapted).
- Fits 3 mm Pinions — The motor shaft accepts standard 3 mm pinion gears, offering compatibility with a wide range of gearing options and allowing you to fine-tune your crawler's performance characteristics to suit your driving style and terrain.
- Compact 50 mm Length — The motor's space-efficient design minimises installation complications and weight distribution concerns, making it suitable for both transmission-mounted and mid-mounted configurations across various crawler platforms.
- Tuned for Rock Crawling and Scale Driving — Every aspect of this motor's design has been optimised specifically for the demands of scale crawling, prioritising low-speed control, smooth power delivery, and reliability over raw racing performance.
- Polished Bushings for Smooth Operation — The motor utilises polished bushings (non-replaceable) to ensure smooth shaft rotation and minimal friction, contributing to the motor's longevity and consistent performance throughout the life of the component.
Technical Performance
The RC4WD 540 Crawler Brushed Motor 35T delivers exceptional performance characteristics specifically engineered for crawling applications. At 7.2 volts with no load, this motor produces 12,500 RPM (±10%) whilst drawing only 1.25 amps, demonstrating excellent efficiency and low power consumption during idle or light-use situations. When operating at maximum efficiency at 7.2 volts, the motor delivers 10,400 RPM (±10%) whilst drawing 4.62 amps, representing the sweet spot for real-world crawling where you're placing consistent load on the motor. The 35-turn configuration positions this motor as a mid-range option within RC4WD's lineup; choosing a lower turn count (such as the 35T over 45T or 55T alternatives) results in higher RPM and faster speeds, whilst higher turn counts sacrifice speed for increased torque output. Operating temperature range spans from ?30°C to +80°C, providing reliable performance across UK seasonal conditions and allowing use in cold winter months as well as heated summer driving sessions. Motor end play is controlled to a maximum of 0.50 mm, ensuring tight tolerances that prevent excessive wear and maintain smooth rotation. The noise level remains below 60 dB, making this motor suitable for club venues and events where noise restrictions may apply. This motor is compatible with popular RC crawler platforms including the RC4WD Bully and Trail Finder ranges, as well as Axial platforms such as the AX10, SCX10 Honcho, SCX10 Dingo, Wraith, and Ridgecrest models, demonstrating broad compatibility across the scale crawling community.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Is the RC4WD 540 Crawler Brushed Motor 35T suitable for rock crawling beginners? — Yes, this motor is an excellent choice for crawling enthusiasts of all experience levels. Its smooth low-speed control and dependable torque delivery make it forgiving and predictable, allowing beginners to focus on driving technique rather than wrestling with unpredictable motor behaviour. The pre-wired connectors also simplify installation for those less experienced with soldering.
- What voltage and battery type does this motor require? — The motor is designed for 7.2V operation, which corresponds to a 2S LiPo battery (2 cells at 3.7V each) or a 2S NiMH battery pack (6 cells at 1.2V each). The performance specifications provided (12,500 RPM and 4.62A current) are based on 7.2V input.
- Can I use this motor in an Axial crawler even though it has 3 mm connectors and Axial ESCs use 4 mm connectors? — Yes, the motor's 3 mm bullet connectors can be crimped up to fit 4 mm connectors on Axial ESCs, allowing compatibility with the SCX10 Honcho, SCX10 Dingo, Wraith, and Ridgecrest models. However, you may wish to have a local hobby shop perform this modification if you're unfamiliar with crimping connectors.
- How does the 35T version compare to other turn counts in the RC4WD range? — RC4WD offers this motor in multiple configurations: 35T, 45T, 55T, 65T, and 80T. The 35T produces the highest RPM (12,500 no-load) and fastest speed, whilst the 80T produces the lowest RPM (5,500 no-load) but the highest torque. For general rock crawling, the 35T offers excellent versatility; for extreme slow-speed technical crawling, consider the 45T or 55T; for maximum torque and ultra-low speed, the 65T or 80T are preferable.
- Is this a brushless or brushed motor, and what are the practical differences? — This is a brushed motor, meaning it uses carbon brushes and a commutator to deliver power to the rotor. Brushed motors are simpler, more affordable, lower-maintenance, and deliver smooth controllable power ideal for crawling. Brushless motors offer higher efficiency and less heat but require specific ESCs and don't provide the same intuitive low-speed control characteristics that make brushed motors preferred for scale crawling applications.
- What's the noise level like, and will it be suitable for club events? — At below 60 dB, this motor produces minimal noise pollution, making it suitable for venue-based competitions and club driving events where noise restrictions typically cap at 82-85 dB. You'll find this motor operating well within acceptable parameters at virtually all UK RC venues.
- Can I fit this motor to my RC4WD Trail Finder or Bully? — Yes, this motor is specifically designed for RC4WD platforms and will fit seamlessly into the Trail Finder and Bully models. The compact 50 mm length ensures proper fitment without modifications, and the 3 mm pinion compatibility aligns with RC4WD's standard gearing systems.
- What maintenance does this motor require? — The motor features polished bushings that are non-replaceable, so routine care focuses on keeping the exterior clean. After off-road use in dusty conditions, use motor spray or compressed air to remove dust and debris. Avoid submerging the motor in water, and store in a dry location. The built-in capacitor reduces glitching, but ensure your ESC is properly tuned for consistent, smooth performance.
