Technical Performance

The Corally 64 DP Pinion represents the pinnacle of RC gear manufacturing, combining materials science, precision engineering and manufacturing excellence to deliver a component that performs flawlessly in the most demanding conditions. The hardened steel construction provides superior resistance to the compressive forces generated during acceleration, cornering and hard braking that characterise competitive RC driving. With 17 teeth, this pinion offers a medium-range tooth count that suits a wide variety of track conditions and driving styles, providing balanced acceleration characteristics that work effectively in both high-grip carpet environments and looser outdoor surfaces. The CNC-cut tooth profile ensures every engagement with the spur gear occurs at the optimal contact angle, maximising power transfer efficiency whilst minimising wear rates on both components. The ultra-precise concentricity means the pinion runs perfectly true, eliminating radial runout that could otherwise cause vibration, noise and accelerated wear. The 4mm teeth width is carefully engineered to provide full engagement with standard spur gears whilst the 9mm overall length ensures compatibility with modern compact motor mounts. The 3.17mm shaft diameter (commonly referred to as 3.17mm bore) is the industry standard for contemporary RC motors, making this pinion truly universal across the vast majority of 1/10-scale and smaller RC car platforms available in the UK market. Built to the exacting standards of European manufacturing, this pinion will maintain its performance characteristics through dozens of competitive races or hundreds of casual bashing sessions.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is a pinion gear and why does it matter for my RC car? — A pinion gear is the small gear attached directly to your motor shaft that meshes with the larger spur gear in your RC car's transmission. The pinion is critical because it determines your overall gear ratio, which controls how quickly your motor revs translate into wheel speed. A smaller pinion (fewer teeth) gives you faster top speed but slower acceleration, whilst a larger pinion (more teeth) provides better acceleration but lower top speed. The 17-tooth pinion from Corally offers a balanced middle ground suitable for most track conditions.
  • How does the 17-tooth configuration compare to other tooth counts? — The 17T configuration strikes an excellent balance for general RC car use. Compared to 15T or 16T pinions which favour higher top speed, the 17T provides noticeably improved acceleration and more controllable handling in technical sections. Compared to 18T or 19T options which prioritise acceleration, the 17T maintains better top speed for open track sections. This makes the 17T pinion one of the most versatile choices for UK racers who encounter mixed track layouts with both technical and high-speed sections.
  • What does 64 DP mean and is it compatible with my RC car? — DP stands for Diametral Pitch, a standard measurement that defines the size and spacing of gear teeth. 64 DP is one of the most common standards in RC cars, particularly in 1/10-scale vehicles. You can only use this pinion if your RC car currently uses 64DP gears — mixing different DP gears will result in poor mesh engagement, excessive noise and rapid wear. Check your current pinion or spur gear for DP markings. Most mainstream RC cars from brands like Traxxas, ARRMA, Team Associated and Losi manufactured in the last decade use 64DP, making this pinion widely compatible across the RC car UK market.
  • Why is hardened steel used instead of aluminium? — Hardened steel offers significantly greater resistance to compression, impact and wear compared to aluminium alloys. Whilst aluminium is lighter, hardened steel can withstand the extreme loading forces generated during high-performance driving without permanent deformation or tooth stripping. For a component as critical as a pinion gear that transfers all motor power to the drivetrain, hardened steel is the preferred material for serious RC car setups where reliability is paramount.
  • How do I know if my motor shaft is 3.17mm? — The standard motor shafts on most contemporary RC car motors are indeed 3.17mm in diameter. You can verify this by checking your motor's specifications or by measuring your existing pinion gear. If your current pinion fits a 3.17mm shaft, this Corally pinion will be a direct replacement. If you're uncertain, contact RC Model Shop's expert team who can confirm compatibility with your specific RC car model.
  • How long will this pinion last before needing replacement? — The hardened steel construction and precision manufacturing mean this pinion will outlast standard aluminium gears by a significant margin. With proper maintenance — ensuring correct mesh engagement with your spur gear and keeping the drivetrain clean and lubricated — you can expect hundreds of competitive races or thousands of casual driving hours before wear becomes noticeable. Exact lifespan depends on track conditions, driving style and maintenance practices, but quality Team Corally components are renowned for exceptional longevity.
  • Do I need any special tools to install this pinion? — Installation is straightforward and requires only a 1.5mm hex key (Allen key), which is included in most basic RC tool kits. You'll need to remove your motor from the car, slide off the old pinion and slide on the new one, then secure it with the set screw using your hex key. The process typically takes less than five minutes and requires no special knowledge or training.
  • Is this suitable for beginners? — Whilst this is a quality component suitable for all skill levels, pinion gear selection is an intermediate-level concept that beginners may not need to understand immediately. If you're new to RC cars, your vehicle will come with a pinion already installed in the correct size for general use. As you progress and want to fine-tune your car's performance for specific track conditions, upgrading to a quality Corally pinion like this one becomes worthwhile. Beginners can safely use this component once they understand basic RC car maintenance.
  • What is the advantage of the CNC-cut tooth design? — CNC (Computer Numerical Control) cutting ensures every tooth is cut to exact specifications with perfect geometry. This precision results in consistent mesh engagement with the spur gear across all tooth positions, eliminating any spots where the gears might bind or create vibration. The result is noticeably smoother operation, reduced noise and significantly extended gear life compared to standard gears manufactured with less precise methods.
  • Can I use this pinion with spur gears from other manufacturers? — Yes, any 64DP spur gear will mesh correctly with this 64DP pinion, regardless of manufacturer. However, for optimal performance and durability, Team Corally recommends using matching spur gears from the same product line, as the tooth profiles are designed to work together perfectly. Mixing gears from different manufacturers may result in slightly different engagement characteristics and noise levels.
