Overview

The RC4WD M3/M4 Plastic Short Rod Ends (Z-S1378) are essential spare parts and upgrades for serious RC enthusiasts building or maintaining scale RC vehicles. These precision linkage joints are engineered using an advanced plastic compound combined with a hardened steel ball, making them ideal for builders working on detailed RC crawler builds, RC rock crawlers, and other scale RC models that demand reliable suspension articulation. Whether you're a seasoned RC competitor looking to refresh multiple link points on your rig, or a dedicated hobbyist constructing a complex suspension system, this pack of 20 rod ends provides the quantity and quality needed to complete your project with confidence.

RC4WD is renowned throughout the RC car UK community for manufacturing premium-quality scale RC parts that meet the exacting standards of discerning builders. These M3/M4 plastic short rod ends represent another example of the brand's commitment to innovative engineering and durability. The advanced plastic compound used in their construction has been specifically developed to provide dependable performance in demanding conditions while maintaining the precision tolerances required for smooth, wobble-free linkage movement. Each rod end features a steel ball component, ensuring longevity and resistance to wear even under the stresses of aggressive off-road use.

Supplied as a convenient pack of 20 units, these rod ends eliminate the need to source individual components from multiple suppliers. This bulk quantity makes them particularly valuable for builders tackling comprehensive suspension upgrades or assembling multiple scale RC models simultaneously. The consistent quality across all 20 pieces ensures uniform performance throughout your build, contributing to predictable handling characteristics and reliable mechanical function.

Key Features

  • Advanced Plastic Compound Construction — The housing is manufactured from RC4WD's proprietary advanced plastic material, specifically formulated to balance strength with flexibility, ensuring the rod ends can withstand the demanding forces encountered in RC rock crawling and scale off-road driving without cracking or stripping threads.
  • Hardened Steel Ball Component — Each rod end incorporates a precisely machined steel ball that resists deformation and wear, maintaining smooth articulation throughout the lifespan of your RC model and eliminating the play and binding that can develop with inferior plastic ball designs.
  • Dual Thread Compatibility — The plastic housing accepts M4 threads whilst the steel ball is sized for M3, providing flexibility in linkage design and allowing builders to source rods and arms from a wider range of suppliers and manufacturers.
  • Black Varnish Coating — A protective black varnish finish is applied to the rod ends, offering modest corrosion resistance and providing a professional, finished appearance that complements scale-realistic RC builds.
  • Pack of 20 Units — The generous 20-piece quantity means you'll have sufficient rod ends for comprehensive suspension builds, multiple vehicles, or future upgrades without the inconvenience and cost of ordering repeatedly.
  • Precision Dimensions — The carefully engineered dimensions ensure compatibility with popular RC linkage systems and provide optimal geometry for suspension articulation, contributing to predictable handling and authentic scale movement.
  • Traxxas 5347 Compatibility — These rod ends are similar in size to the Traxxas 5347, opening possibilities for builders looking to mix and match components from different manufacturers or seeking direct alternatives.

Technical Performance

The RC4WD M3/M4 Plastic Short Rod Ends demonstrate engineering excellence through their materials selection and dimensional precision. The advanced plastic compound used for the housing balances material strength with controlled flexibility, ensuring that the rod end can transmit suspension forces without fracturing whilst also absorbing minor impacts that might otherwise damage more rigid components. The integrated steel ball bearing provides the critical articulation point where suspension arms connect to links, and the hardened steel construction ensures this joint remains smooth and precise through thousands of cycles of compression and extension. The dual thread compatibility—M4 for the plastic housing and M3 for the steel ball—reflects careful engineering to accommodate various linkage designs and arm specifications. The black varnish coating provides a degree of corrosion resistance, important for RC vehicles that may be exposed to damp conditions or washed after muddy terrain driving. At a height of 22mm and with an outer diameter of 7mm, these rod ends integrate seamlessly into scale RC suspension geometry, maintaining proper proportions whilst delivering the mechanical performance required for articulate suspension movement. The ball width of 6.92mm and ball lip diameter of 4.92mm are precisely calculated to ensure stability whilst allowing full freedom of movement. For builders and enthusiasts working on RC crawlers, scale RC buggies, and other precision RC models, these specifications represent a refined solution that elevates build quality and reliability.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Are RC4WD plastic rod ends durable for serious RC scale builds? — Yes, RC4WD's advanced plastic compound has been specifically engineered for durability in demanding applications. The combination of the plastic housing with a hardened steel ball provides the resilience needed for active RC crawling and scale driving. These rod ends will perform reliably through extended use, though like all suspension components, they may eventually require replacement after thousands of cycles of articulation and significant impacts.
  • What makes these rod ends superior to standard plastic rod ends? — RC4WD's proprietary advanced plastic formula provides superior strength and flexibility compared to basic plastic designs. The hardened steel ball component resists wear and deformation far better than all-plastic alternatives, maintaining smooth articulation indefinitely. The precision manufacturing ensures consistent dimensions across all 20 units, contributing to predictable handling and suspension behaviour.
  • Will these rod ends fit my RC model if I use Traxxas or other brand arms? — The M3/M4 thread compatibility makes these rod ends suitable for many popular RC linkage systems. They are noted as being similar in size to Traxxas 5347 rod ends, suggesting compatibility with many Traxxas models. However, it's advisable to compare specifications with your specific vehicle's requirements or contact our knowledgeable team for compatibility confirmation before ordering.
  • How many rod ends do I need for a complete RC vehicle build? — A typical RC crawler or scale off-road model might require 4 to 8 rod ends depending on suspension design and the number of separate linkage points. The pack of 20 provides ample quantity for building or upgrading multiple vehicles, or for maintaining spares for future repairs and modifications.
  • What is the difference between the M3 and M4 specifications? — The M4 specification refers to the thread size in the plastic housing, meaning rod ends will accept M4 threaded rods or arms. The M3 specification refers to the diameter of the steel ball component, determining what size ball sockets will interface with this rod end. This dual specification design allows builders to source arms and rods from a range of manufacturers.
  • Are these rod ends suitable for beginners building their first RC model? — These are specialised components best suited to builders with intermediate to advanced experience in RC assembly and suspension design. If you're new to RC building, RC Model Shop's experienced team can guide you through component selection and ensure you choose the right parts for your specific project.
  • How do I know if I need to replace my existing rod ends? — Rod ends should be replaced if you notice excessive play or looseness in suspension articulation, if the ball joint binds or resists smooth movement, or if you observe cracks or stripped threads in the plastic housing. Preventative replacement during comprehensive upgrades is also recommended to ensure uniform performance throughout your linkage system.
