Overview
The Fastrax M1 21T Steel Pinion Gear (5mm) MOD1 is a precision-engineered replacement drivetrain component designed for RC enthusiasts who demand reliability and performance from their models. Whether you're running a crawler, off-road buggy, or specialist RC vehicle, this steel pinion gear delivers the durability and consistency that serious RC hobbyists expect. This is an essential upgrade or replacement part for anyone maintaining their RC car UK collection to the highest standards.
Steel pinion gears are fundamental to the performance of any RC model, transferring power from the motor to the transmission with minimal wear and maximum efficiency. The Fastrax M1 21T version is specifically engineered to provide the ideal balance between acceleration and top speed for a wide range of applications. Whether you're upgrading from stock gears or replacing worn components, this gear represents a cost-effective way to maintain peak drivetrain performance in your ready to run RC vehicle or custom build.
Built from high-quality steel rather than softer materials, this pinion gear resists wear far better than alternative options, ensuring consistent mesh with your spur gear over extended periods of use. The M1 module specification and precise 5mm bore make this gear compatible with a wide range of RC platforms, making it an invaluable addition to any RC car UK enthusiast's spare parts collection.
Key Features
- 21 Tooth Count — The 21-tooth configuration provides an optimised balance between acceleration and top speed, making this gear suitable for a variety of driving conditions and vehicle types across the RC hobby spectrum.
- Steel Construction — Manufactured from durable steel rather than softer materials, this pinion gear resists wear, stripping, and damage far more effectively than nylon or plastic alternatives, extending the life of your drivetrain and reducing maintenance frequency.
- M1 Module Specification — The M1 module (1mm pitch) ensures compatibility with a vast range of RC spur gears and drivetrain systems, making this a versatile choice for users with multiple vehicles or those upgrading existing setups.
- 5mm Bore — The standard 5mm motor shaft bore ensures a secure fit with most brushless and brushed RC motors commonly used in hobby-grade RC vehicles, providing reliable power transfer without slippage.
- Precision Engineering — Every tooth is machined to exacting tolerances to ensure smooth mesh with mating gears, reducing noise, vibration, and drivetrain losses that would otherwise diminish performance and efficiency.
Technical Performance
The Fastrax M1 21T Steel Pinion Gear represents a significant upgrade over standard plastic or softer metal alternatives commonly found in entry-level RC vehicles. Steel's superior hardness and resistance to deformation make it the material of choice for serious RC enthusiasts who run their models frequently or under demanding conditions. The 21-tooth configuration strikes an excellent balance for general-purpose driving; it provides sufficient low-end torque for acceleration and crawling situations whilst allowing for adequate top-end speed without placing excessive strain on the motor or ESC during extended runs. The M1 module specification is the industry standard for RC pinion gears, ensuring compatibility with spur gears from leading manufacturers and guaranteeing that you can find replacement components easily at any reputable RC car UK retailer. The 5mm bore diameter matches the shaft size of virtually all hobby-grade brushless and brushed motors, from small 540-size motors to larger platform-specific units. When properly meshed with your spur gear—typically set to a clearance of roughly the thickness of a sheet of paper—this pinion will deliver smooth, efficient power transfer with minimal noise and maximum responsiveness to throttle inputs. The steel construction means this gear will maintain its performance characteristics over hundreds of runs, making it an excellent investment for anyone serious about maintaining their RC collection to the highest standard.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What vehicles is the Fastrax M1 21T steel pinion gear compatible with? — This pinion gear is compatible with any RC vehicle using an M1 module drivetrain system with a 5mm motor shaft. This includes a wide range of crawlers, buggies, truggies, and specialist RC models. Compatibility varies by vehicle, so check your manual or contact us to confirm fitment before purchasing.
- Why choose steel instead of plastic pinion gears? — Steel pinion gears offer dramatically superior durability compared to plastic alternatives. They resist stripping, wear, and deformation far more effectively, maintaining consistent mesh with your spur gear over extended use. Whilst slightly more expensive upfront, a quality steel pinion will outlast multiple plastic gears, making it more cost-effective and reliable for serious RC hobbyists.
- How do I know if my pinion gear needs replacing? — Signs that your pinion gear requires replacement include visible teeth damage or rounding, grinding or chattering noises from the drivetrain, loss of power transmission efficiency, or visible wear patterns on individual teeth. Regular inspection during maintenance will help you identify wear before catastrophic failure occurs.
- What is M1 module and why does it matter? — Module refers to the pitch of the gear teeth, with M1 meaning 1mm pitch between teeth. M1 is the industry standard for RC car pinion and spur gears, ensuring compatibility across different manufacturers and models. Using correctly matched module specifications ensures smooth mesh and prevents premature wear.
- Is this suitable for beginners? — Whilst this is a genuine quality component, pinion gear replacement is typically a task for intermediate to experienced RC enthusiasts who understand drivetrain maintenance. If you're new to RC, we recommend consulting your vehicle manual or contacting our team for guidance on fitting and setup.
- How often should I replace my pinion gear? — With proper maintenance, a quality steel pinion gear like this Fastrax component should last many hundreds of runs. Replacement frequency depends on driving intensity, terrain conditions, and how well you maintain proper mesh clearance with your spur gear. Heavy use on abrasive terrain may require more frequent replacement than casual bashing on smooth surfaces.
