Key Features
- Special Hardened Steel Construction — This pinion is manufactured from specially hardened steel that provides exceptional toughness and durability under extreme racing loads. The hardened material resists wear, deformation and tooth breakage far better than standard steel, ensuring your gear ratio remains consistent throughout countless racing hours and multiple competition seasons.
- CNC-Cut Teeth for Perfect Geometry — Every tooth is cut using precision CNC machinery to achieve perfect tooth shape and concentricity. This precision engineering eliminates play, backlash and noise, delivering smooth, efficient power transfer from your motor to the rest of your drivetrain with absolutely no lost motion or vibration.
- Ultra-True Running for Vibration-Free Operation — The exceptional concentricity and precision tolerances ensure the pinion runs perfectly centred on your motor shaft, eliminating vibration that can damage bearings, rob power and compromise handling. Smooth operation means more consistent lap times and better control of your RC car during high-speed corners.
- MOD1 Module Compatibility — This pinion features MOD1 (metric pitch 1.0) gearing, making it compatible with all cars equipped with MOD1 gears. The MOD1 standard is widely used in 1/8 scale RC racing applications, ensuring you can easily find matching spur gears and other drivetrain components from Corally and other leading manufacturers.
- 5mm Motor Shaft Compatibility — The pinion is precisely sized to fit all standard 5mm diameter motor shafts, which are the industry standard for 1/8 scale brushless RC car motors. This universal compatibility means easy installation and the freedom to swap motors without requiring different pinions.
- 21-Tooth Configuration — The 21-tooth design offers an excellent balance of acceleration and top speed for most track conditions. This tooth count serves as a versatile middle-ground option, but Corally manufactures this pinion in multiple tooth counts, allowing you to find the perfect gear ratio for your specific driving style, track layout and motor specifications.
- Easy Identification Marking — Each pinion is clearly marked with its tooth count (21T), making quick and easy identification when you're swapping gears between cars or comparing different ratios during setup sessions. This simple feature eliminates confusion and saves valuable time during race preparation.
- 6.2mm Teeth Width — The substantial teeth width provides plenty of contact surface area between the pinion and spur gear, distributing loads evenly and maximising durability. Wider teeth mean less stress concentration on individual tooth profiles, extending the lifespan of both the pinion and spur gear.
- Compact 13mm Gear Length — The short overall length keeps your RC car's drivetrain compact and efficient, minimising rotating mass and reducing inertia for quicker acceleration and more responsive handling. Shorter gears also fit more easily into tightly engineered RC chassis designs.
- 2.0mm Hex Key Installation — Installation and removal use a standard 2.0mm hex key, making this pinion easy to work with using tools you already have in your RC workshop. The straightforward installation procedure means less downtime between races and simpler maintenance routines.
- Made in Europe — This pinion is manufactured in Europe to exacting quality standards, ensuring consistent production quality and reliability. European manufacturing expertise combined with precision CNC technology guarantees that every pinion meets Corally's stringent specifications.
Technical Performance
The Corally M1.0 21-tooth pinion represents the absolute peak of gear manufacturing technology for 1/8 scale RC cars. This component has been engineered using CNC machines specifically designed for gear production, ensuring every tooth conforms to perfect involute geometry for smooth mesh with your spur gear. The hardened steel material provides superior resistance to the extreme rotational forces generated by modern brushless motors, which can deliver tremendous torque and require gears capable of handling continuous high-load operation. The 5.0mm shaft diameter fits all standard 1/8 scale brushless motors, whether you're running compact 2850KV motors for circuits and carpeted tracks or high-torque 1900KV motors for outdoor gravel and dirt. The MOD1 gear pitch is the industry-standard module for 1/8 scale RC racing, with a circular pitch of 3.14mm, ensuring perfect meshing with matching spur gears. The pinion's 21-tooth count provides an excellent starting point for most track conditions, though Corally manufactures this pinion across an entire range of tooth counts, allowing competitive racers to dial in their specific gear ratios for different venues. The 6.2mm tooth width distributes load across a substantial contact area, whilst the 13mm overall length keeps your RC car's drivetrain compact and responsive. Ultra-precise concentricity ensures that as your motor spins, the pinion runs perfectly true without any radial runout, meaning zero vibration and maximum bearing life. This precision is critical because any runout whatsoever will create rippling loads on your spur gear, accelerating wear and potentially causing catastrophic tooth failure during a race. The hardened steel construction resists the wear patterns that develop over thousands of gear mesh cycles, maintaining your gear ratio's intended performance characteristics throughout a complete racing season.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What is a pinion gear and why do I need to replace mine? — A pinion gear is a small gear attached directly to your RC motor shaft that meshes with a larger spur gear to transfer power to the wheels. Pinion gears wear over time as they engage millions of times during racing, eventually developing tooth damage, chipping or wear patterns that degrade performance and efficiency. Replacing a worn pinion with a fresh Corally hardened steel pinion restores crisp acceleration, smooth power delivery and optimal gear mesh quality. Many racers keep several pinions on hand so they can quickly swap between different tooth counts without removing the motor from the chassis.
- Will this pinion fit my RC car? — This pinion will fit any 1/8 scale RC car equipped with a standard 5mm diameter motor shaft and MOD1 gearing system. Corally manufactures this pinion specifically for 1/8 scale applications, so it is compatible with popular 1/8 buggy, truck and truggy models from Corally and other manufacturers. However, you should verify that your car uses MOD1 gears and a 5mm motor shaft before ordering. If you're unsure about your car's specifications, contact our RC Model Shop team who can help you identify your vehicle and recommend the correct pinion.
- What's the difference between MOD1 and other pinion systems? — MOD1 refers to a metric module 1.0 gear pitch, which defines how the teeth are sized and spaced. Different modules (such as MOD0.6, MOD1.0, MOD1.5) have different tooth sizes and pitches, so gears from different module systems will not mesh together. MOD1 is the standard for most 1/8 scale RC racing cars, particularly popular in Europe and among competitive racers. When selecting a replacement pinion, you must match both the module (MOD1) and the shaft diameter (5mm) of your motor to ensure proper fit and performance.
- How do I choose between different tooth counts? — Pinion tooth count directly affects your gear ratio. A smaller tooth count (like 21T) creates a higher gear ratio, providing faster top speed but reduced acceleration. A larger tooth count creates a lower gear ratio, offering better acceleration but lower top speed. The optimal tooth count depends on your track layout, motor KV rating, battery voltage and driving style. A 21-tooth pinion is an excellent starting point for most conditions, but Corally manufactures this pinion in multiple tooth counts so competitive racers can fine-tune their gear ratio for specific venues and conditions.
- Why is hardened steel better than standard steel? — Hardened steel undergoes a heat treatment process that increases its hardness and wear resistance compared to standard steel. Hardened pinions resist tooth breakage, chipping and deformation under the extreme loads generated by powerful brushless motors. They maintain their precise geometry much longer, preserving your gear mesh quality and drivetrain efficiency throughout a complete racing season. Whilst hardened steel pinions cost more than softer alternatives, they deliver superior durability and performance that justify the investment for serious racers.
- How often should I replace my pinion gear? — Replacement frequency depends on your usage level, motor power, track surface and driving style. Casual bashers might replace a pinion once or twice per year, whilst competitive racers running powerful brushless motors might replace pinions after every few races or at the first sign of tooth wear. Inspect your pinion regularly for chipped teeth, wear patterns or flattening of tooth flanks. The moment you notice visible wear, replace the pinion to prevent accelerated spur gear damage and maintain optimal performance.
- Is this suitable for beginners? — Whilst this Corally pinion is a professional-grade component, it is absolutely suitable for beginners and casual RC enthusiasts. In fact, using quality components like this Corally pinion from the start ensures your RC car performs reliably and smoothly, making the RC hobby more enjoyable. Beginners benefit from the vibration-free operation and smooth power delivery that quality gearing provides. Corally's reputation for precision and durability makes this pinion an excellent choice whether you're a seasoned competitor or just discovering the world of RC racing.
- What tools do I need to install this pinion? — Installation requires a 2.0mm hex key to secure the pinion onto your motor shaft. Most RC enthusiasts already own this size hex key as part of their standard RC tool kit. You may also want a small amount of threadlocker compound on the set screw to prevent accidental loosening during intense racing sessions, though this is optional. No special tools or expertise is required — installation is straightforward and takes just a few minutes.
- Does this pinion come with a set screw? — According to the specifications, this pinion accepts a 2.0mm hex set screw for securing it to your motor shaft, though the set screw may not be included in the package. Most RC enthusiasts have spare set screws from previous motor purchases, but if you need one, they are widely available and inexpensive. We recommend having a small assortment of metric set screws in your RC workshop for exactly these situations.
