Technical Performance
This hardened steel 28-tooth pinion represents the convergence of advanced materials science and precision CNC manufacturing to deliver exceptional performance in demanding RC driving applications. The special hardened steel composition undergoes thermal treatment processes that increase material hardness and wear resistance far beyond standard mild steel gears, which is why competitive RC racers consistently specify hardened steel pinions for high-stress applications. The manufacturing process utilises specialised gear-cutting machinery that shapes each tooth with extraordinary precision, creating perfect tooth flank geometry that ensures optimal mesh with compatible spur gears. This technical excellence translates into measurable performance benefits: smoother acceleration without gear noise or mechanical chatter, reduced vibration that improves chassis stability and handling characteristics, and extended component lifespan before wear or tooth stripping becomes evident. The 48 DP module specification aligns this pinion with Corally's entire 48 DP component ecosystem, meaning you can combine multiple tooth-count options to explore different gear ratios for varying track conditions, motor KV ratings and driving styles. The 13mm overall length and 6.2mm tooth width are dimensionally optimised for 5mm motor shafts whilst maintaining sufficient material density to resist bending and maintain accurate tooth engagement throughout demanding driving sessions. Whether you're running a competitive RC racing setup in the UK or upgrading a basher for improved reliability, this pinion delivers the concentricity, durability and performance that serious RC enthusiasts demand from their drivetrain components.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What is a pinion gear and why do I need to upgrade mine? — A pinion gear is the small toothed wheel that mounts on your RC car's motor shaft and meshes with the larger spur gear to transmit power from the motor to the drivetrain. Upgrading to a premium hardened steel pinion like this Corally component improves gear mesh quality, reduces vibration and noise, minimises wear, and ultimately delivers smoother power delivery and more reliable performance during racing or bashing sessions. Stock plastic or soft-steel pinions are often prone to tooth stripping under high torque, whereas hardened steel components like this Corally pinion resist wear and provide years of reliable service.
- What does 48 DP mean and why does it matter? — DP stands for Diametral Pitch, a measurement standard that defines tooth size and spacing on gears. 48 DP is a common specification for 1/10 scale RC cars and buggies, meaning this pinion is compatible with all other Corally 48 DP components. Matching DP ratings across your entire drivetrain is essential for proper gear mesh, correct tooth engagement, and reliable power transmission without grinding, slipping or premature wear.
- How do I know if this pinion is compatible with my RC car? — This pinion features a 5mm motor shaft bore, so it fits any RC car motor with a 5mm diameter drive shaft. You also need to confirm that your RC car uses 48 DP gearing; if your vehicle is currently fitted with 48 DP components, this pinion will integrate seamlessly into your existing drivetrain. If you're unsure about your car's current gearing specification, check the manufacturer's documentation or contact RC Model Shop for technical advice.
- What is the difference between hardened steel and standard steel pinions? — Hardened steel undergoes thermal treatment that increases material hardness, wear resistance and fatigue strength compared to standard mild steel. Hardened steel pinions resist tooth stripping during high-torque acceleration, maintain concentricity longer during extended use, and typically outlast soft-steel alternatives by several times. For competitive RC racing or high-performance bashing, hardened steel is the preferred choice despite the higher material cost.
- Can I use this pinion to change my RC car's gear ratio? — Yes, absolutely. The 28-tooth count represents one position in the available 48 DP range. By selecting different tooth counts, you can adjust your gear ratio to optimise for acceleration or top speed depending on your track conditions and driving preferences. Lower tooth counts increase top speed but reduce acceleration, whilst higher tooth counts do the opposite. Corally manufactures this pinion as part of a complete range allowing you to experiment systematically with different ratios.
- Is this suitable for beginners? — Whilst this pinion delivers professional-grade performance, it's suitable for any RC enthusiast who wants to upgrade their drivetrain quality, regardless of experience level. Installation requires only a 2.0mm hex key and basic mechanical skill. However, beginners should first ensure they understand gear ratios and how tooth-count changes affect performance before experimenting with multiple pinion options. Contact RC Model Shop if you need advice on selecting the appropriate gear ratio for your specific RC car and driving style.
- How do I install this pinion on my RC car motor? — The installation process is straightforward: remove your existing pinion by loosening the setscrew with a 2.0mm hex key, slide the old pinion off the motor shaft, slide the new hardened steel Corally pinion onto the shaft, and tighten the setscrew securely. Ensure the pinion sits flush against the motor shaft collar and that tooth mesh with the spur gear is correct before operating your RC car. Always allow the motor shaft to cool if it's been running before attempting pinion removal, as this makes the job easier.
- What is the difference between short and long pinion designs? — The short-length design of this pinion (13mm overall) is optimised for compact motor installations and vehicles where space is limited. Long-length pinions provide slightly greater tooth contact surface and are preferred in some applications, but short pinions offer adequate durability for 48 DP setups whilst reducing overall motor assembly width. The Corally range includes both options so you can choose based on your specific RC car's geometry and requirements.
- Will this pinion improve my RC car's performance? — Upgrading to this hardened steel Corally pinion will improve drivetrain quality, reduce vibration, ensure smoother acceleration and potentially improve handling characteristics by reducing mechanical noise and wear. However, gear ratio alone doesn't determine performance; motor KV rating, battery voltage, spur gear selection and chassis setup all contribute equally to overall RC car performance. This pinion should be part of a comprehensive tuning approach rather than a standalone upgrade.
- How long does this pinion last before needing replacement? — Premium hardened steel pinions like this Corally component typically outlast soft-steel alternatives by several times under identical usage conditions. Lifespan depends on driving intensity, gear ratio selection, motor KV rating and maintenance practices. Regular inspection for tooth wear and proper gear mesh adjustment will maximise component lifespan. Most competitive RC racers replace pinions seasonally or annually depending on usage intensity, whilst recreational users might expect several years of reliable service.
