Overview
The CORALLY 48 DP PINION SHORT HARDENED STEEL 24 TEETH 5MM (C-72424) is a precision-engineered motor pinion gear designed for serious RC enthusiasts who demand reliability, durability and exact performance tuning. Manufactured by Team Corally, a recognised leader in high-performance RC components, this 24-tooth pinion represents a critical component in your RC car's drivetrain — allowing you to dial in the perfect gear ratio for your specific track conditions and driving style. Whether you're setting up a competitive race car, fine-tuning a weekend basher, or upgrading your existing RC vehicle, this hardened steel pinion delivers the concentricity and precision that separates winning setups from ordinary ones.
Pinion gears are essential to any RC car's performance equation. They mesh directly with your spur gear to create your overall gear ratio, which in turn determines your vehicle's top speed, acceleration and torque characteristics. The 24-tooth configuration offers a mid-range gearing option that provides balanced performance across most track types — perfect for experimenting with different gear ratios to find your optimal setup. Unlike cheaper alternatives, the CORALLY C-72424 is manufactured from special hardened steel using precision CNC machinery, ensuring exceptional durability even under the extreme stresses of competition or high-speed bashings on rough terrain.
If you're serious about RC performance and want a pinion gear that will withstand thousands of runs without degradation, this is the component you need in your spares box. Available now at RC Model Shop, this is genuine Team Corally stock supplied by an authorised retailer.
Key Features
- Special Hardened Steel Construction — This pinion is manufactured from specially formulated hardened steel rather than standard materials, providing superior toughness and resistance to wear, stripping and damage that can occur during aggressive driving or competition use.
- CNC Cut Teeth for Perfect Geometry — Every tooth is precisely cut using Computer Numerical Control machinery, ensuring perfect tooth shape and concentricity (the accuracy of the gear's rotation around its central axis), which eliminates vibration and noise while maximising efficiency of power transfer from your motor to your drivetrain.
- Ultra-True Running for Vibration-Free Operation — The precision manufacturing process ensures the gear runs with minimal runout, meaning less vibration, less strain on your motor bearings, longer component life, and a smoother driving experience across all RPM ranges.
- Module 48DP Standard — This pinion adheres to the 48 Diametral Pitch standard, a recognised sizing system that allows seamless compatibility with any 48DP spur gear — giving you flexibility to experiment with different tooth counts on the spur side to dial in your ideal ratio.
- 24-Tooth Configuration — The 24-tooth count offers versatile mid-range gearing suitable for most track types and driving styles, serving as an excellent starting point for tuning before moving to higher or lower tooth counts based on your performance needs.
- 5mm Motor Shaft Fitment — Designed for 5mm diameter motor shafts, this pinion is compatible with the vast majority of modern brushless and brushed RC motors commonly used in UK RC cars, making it a practical upgrade or replacement for most setups.
- Short Version Design — The compact short-length design minimises weight whilst maintaining full tooth engagement, reducing unsprung mass and keeping your centre of gravity as low as possible for improved handling characteristics.
- Easy Identification Marking — Each pinion is clearly marked with its tooth number, allowing you to quickly and accurately identify gears in your spares collection without confusion or accidental mis-assembly.
- Made in Europe — Manufactured in Europe to exacting quality standards, ensuring consistent quality control and reliability across every unit produced.
Technical Performance
The CORALLY 48 DP PINION SHORT HARDENED STEEL 24 TEETH 5MM represents the pinnacle of pinion gear engineering for competitive and serious recreational RC drivers. The 24-tooth tooth count places this in the mid-range of the 48DP gearing spectrum — not too low (which would prioritise speed at the expense of torque and acceleration) and not too high (which would sacrifice top-end speed). This makes it an ideal starting point for most track conditions, from tight technical courses requiring aggressive acceleration to faster flowing layouts where speed is important. The special hardened steel construction provides significantly greater durability than standard pinion materials, resisting the tooth stripping and wear that can occur when pushing your RC car to its limits. With a bore diameter of 5.0mm, this pinion accommodates the vast majority of brushless RC motors used in 1/10-scale competition vehicles across the UK. The gear pitch of 48DP ensures compatibility with any 48DP spur gear, allowing you to calculate and dial in your exact desired gear ratio by simply changing the tooth count on either the pinion or spur side. The CNC-cut teeth guarantee perfect concentricity and tooth geometry, meaning minimal backlash and maximum power transmission efficiency — critical factors in competitive racing where every fraction of a second counts. The teeth width of 6.20mm and overall gear length of 13.00mm provide ample contact area for reliable meshing whilst keeping the footprint compact. Installation requires just a 2.0mm hex key, making gear ratio changes quick and straightforward between runs or practice sessions.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What is a pinion gear and why do I need it for my RC car? — The pinion gear is a small gear that attaches directly to your RC motor's shaft and meshes with the larger spur gear in your gearbox. Together, these two gears create your overall gear ratio, which determines how fast your motor spins is translated into wheel speed and torque. By changing pinion tooth count (or spur tooth count), you can tune your vehicle's performance for different track types — lower pinion teeth for more speed, higher pinion teeth for more acceleration and torque.
- Will this pinion work with my RC car? — This pinion is compatible with any RC car that uses a 48 DP gearing system and has a 5mm diameter motor shaft. Most modern brushless 1/10-scale RC buggies, trucks and on-road cars use this standard. However, we recommend checking your vehicle's manual or contacting our team to confirm compatibility before purchasing. The pinion must mate with a corresponding 48 DP spur gear already fitted to your vehicle.
- How do I choose the right pinion tooth count for my track? — Lower tooth counts (like this 24T) prioritise speed and top-end performance on flowing, open tracks. Higher tooth counts provide better acceleration and torque for technical, tight courses with lots of corners. Start with 24T and test — if your motor is struggling to accelerate or you're losing races at the start, try moving to 25T or 26T. If you're bogging down on straightaways, try 23T or 22T. Each tooth count change affects your gear ratio significantly, so test methodically.
- What makes this pinion different from cheaper alternatives? — This CORALLY pinion features special hardened steel construction and precision CNC cutting, resulting in perfect tooth geometry and concentricity. Budget pinions may be cut from softer materials using stamping or lower-tolerance processes, leading to tooth stripping, vibration and shorter lifespan. The hardened steel and precise manufacturing mean this pinion will withstand thousands more runs and deliver better efficiency.
- Is this pinion suitable for beginners? — Absolutely. Whilst experienced racers understand gear ratio tuning intimately, the 24-tooth configuration is a sensible mid-range starting point for any RC car using 48DP gearing. Beginners can start here, then experiment with adjacent tooth counts as they gain experience and develop preferences for their driving style and favourite tracks.
- How often should I replace my pinion gear? — With proper maintenance and the hardened steel construction of this CORALLY pinion, you can expect thousands of runs before replacement becomes necessary. Replace immediately if you notice: teeth chipped or stripped, visible damage, the pinion becoming difficult to remove due to wear, or grinding noises during motor operation. Many UK RC competitors keep several pinions in different tooth counts as spares so they can quickly swap ratios between races.
