Technical Performance
The Corally 48 DP Pinion represents a masterclass in precision RC component engineering. Built from special hardened steel, this 20-tooth pinion delivers the durability and reliability required by serious RC enthusiasts in the UK and across Europe. The 5mm bore accommodates the standard motor shaft found on high-performance brushless RC motors, whilst the short version design minimises unnecessary rotating mass that could otherwise compromise acceleration response. At just 13mm in overall length and 6.2mm in teeth width, this pinion strikes an excellent balance between strength and compact dimensions. The 2.0mm hex key size indicates a secure grub screw fastening system that prevents any risk of slippage during high-torque situations. The CNC tooth cutting process ensures that each tooth profile is geometrically perfect, which is crucial for smooth mesh with your spur gear and for maintaining consistent power delivery throughout acceleration and cornering. The combination of hardened steel material and ultra-precise manufacturing tolerances means this pinion will maintain its performance characteristics over thousands of operating hours, resisting wear and tooth degradation far better than inferior alternatives. Whether you're running a competitive race setup or enjoying recreational RC bashing, the Corally C-72420 provides the precision and durability that justifies investment in a quality component.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What does 48 DP mean and why is it important for my RC car? — DP stands for Diametral Pitch, which is a measurement that determines the size and spacing of gear teeth. 48 DP is an industry standard specification used in many modern RC vehicles, meaning this pinion will be compatible with most contemporary RC motors, spur gears and drivetrain components. The correct pitch matching between pinion and spur gear is essential for smooth operation and proper power transmission.
- How does a 20-tooth pinion compare to 19-tooth or 21-tooth alternatives? — The tooth count directly affects your vehicle's acceleration and top speed characteristics. A 20-tooth pinion represents a balanced middle ground — fewer teeth (such as 19T) would increase top speed but reduce acceleration, whilst more teeth (such as 21T) would improve acceleration but sacrifice maximum velocity. The 20-tooth configuration is ideal for general-purpose RC driving and works well across most track conditions.
- Why is hardened steel better than standard steel for pinion gears? — Hardened steel undergoes a heat treatment process that significantly increases its hardness and resistance to wear. This means teeth resist stripping and degradation even under extreme loads and sustained use. Standard steel is softer and more prone to tooth wear, especially when paired with high-powered brushless motors. The Corally hardened steel construction ensures your pinion maintains tooth integrity and smooth operation for thousands of hours.
- What is concentricity and why does the Corally pinion emphasise this feature? — Concentricity refers to how perfectly centred the gear teeth are around the motor shaft bore. If a gear has poor concentricity, it will wobble as it spins, creating vibration, noise and inefficiency. The Corally C-72420 is manufactured on specialised machinery with ultra-tight tolerances to ensure perfect concentricity, resulting in vibration-free operation that translates to smoother acceleration, reduced noise and better overall RC performance.
- Is this suitable for beginners? — Yes, absolutely. Whilst this is a high-quality component, pinion gears are universal RC parts and this 20-tooth 48 DP specification is one of the most common in the hobby. Beginners benefit from using quality components like the Corally, as superior build quality means fewer drivetrain failures and a more reliable, enjoyable RC experience whilst learning the hobby.
- What size motor shaft do I need? — This pinion is designed for 5mm motor shafts, which is the universal standard used on virtually all modern brushless RC motors. Before purchasing, verify that your motor has a 5mm shaft — most contemporary high-performance brushless motors use this specification, making the Corally C-72420 compatible with the vast majority of UK RC setups.
- Can I use this pinion with different spur gears? — Yes, as long as the spur gear also uses the 48 DP specification, it will mesh correctly with this pinion. The beauty of using standard specifications is that you can mix and match quality components from different manufacturers, allowing you to build optimised setups using the best components for your budget and performance requirements.
- How do I know which pinion tooth count to choose? — This depends on your motor's KV rating, your battery voltage, track characteristics and driving style. A 20-tooth pinion like the C-72420 provides balanced performance. If you want more top speed, consider a lower tooth count (19T), or if you want better acceleration from a standstill, try a higher count (21T or 22T). Many RC drivers keep several pinions in different tooth counts to adapt to different tracks and conditions.
