Overview

The Corally 48 DP Pinion Short Hardened Steel 24 Teeth Shaft Dia. 3.17mm (model C-71424) is a precision-engineered motor pinion gear designed for RC enthusiasts who demand reliability and performance in their remote control vehicles. This hardened steel pinion represents the gold standard in RC car UK components, offering exceptional durability and consistent performance whether you're a weekend basher, competitive racer, or dedicated hobbyist. The 48 pitch (48DP) specification makes this gear compatible with a wide range of modern RC cars, buggies, trucks and crawler platforms available in the UK market today.

As a specialist component from the trusted Corally brand, this pinion gear is manufactured to exacting standards using hardened steel construction, ensuring it can withstand the extreme stresses and rotational forces generated by high-performance brushless motors and electric drivetrain systems. The short-profile design is specifically engineered to minimise mesh play whilst maximising gear engagement with spur gears, delivering smoother power delivery and reducing noise levels during operation. Whether you're upgrading an existing RC car or building a complete custom setup from scratch, this pinion gear is an essential component for anyone serious about RC performance.

The 24-tooth configuration provides an excellent balance between acceleration and top speed, making it suitable for a variety of driving styles and track conditions. With a 3.17mm shaft diameter, this pinion is compatible with most standard motor shafts found in modern brushless RC motors, making it one of the most versatile motor pinion options available to UK RC car enthusiasts. Stock availability is excellent, with more than 10 units currently in inventory at RC Model Shop, ensuring you can get your RC car back on the track quickly.

Key Features

  • Hardened Steel Construction — The pinion gear is manufactured from hardened steel, which provides exceptional resistance to wear, deformation and breakage under the extreme rotational forces generated by brushless RC motors, ensuring a long service life compared to standard aluminium or brass alternatives.
  • 48 Pitch (48DP) Specification — The 48 pitch rating indicates a fine tooth profile that ensures precise meshing with compatible spur gears, delivering smooth power transmission with minimal backlash and vibration during acceleration and cornering manoeuvres.
  • 24-Tooth Configuration — The 24-tooth count strikes an optimal balance between motor RPM and wheel speed, providing responsive acceleration whilst maintaining reasonable top speed capability suitable for general RC car driving and competitive racing applications.
  • Short-Profile Design — The short pinion profile minimises the overall width of the gear, reducing mesh play with the spur gear and allowing for tighter drivetrain tolerances, which improves power delivery efficiency and reduces drivetrain noise.
  • 3.17mm Shaft Diameter — This shaft size is the industry-standard diameter for brushless RC motors, ensuring compatibility with the vast majority of modern 1/10 and 1/8 scale RC cars, buggies, trucks and crawler platforms available in the UK RC market.
  • Precision Engineering — Every Corally pinion gear is manufactured to tight tolerances with perfectly balanced teeth profiles, ensuring consistent meshing characteristics and predictable handling characteristics during competitive racing or recreational bashing.
  • Cost-Effective Performance Upgrade — As an individual replacement component, this pinion gear offers an affordable way to fine-tune your RC car's drivetrain performance or replace a worn original pinion without the expense of a complete drivetrain rebuild.

Technical Performance

This Corally 48 DP motor pinion represents the pinnacle of precision gear engineering for RC vehicles. The hardened steel construction undergoes specialist heat treatment processes to achieve a Rockwell hardness rating that far exceeds standard brass or aluminium alternatives, resulting in dramatically extended service life and resistance to tooth stripping or deformation. The 24-tooth configuration combined with the 48-pitch fine-tooth profile creates a precise mechanical interface with modern spur gears, ensuring smooth and efficient power transfer from your brushless motor to the drivetrain. The short-profile design is crucial for minimising drivetrain play, which directly translates to more responsive and predictable handling characteristics in competitive RC racing scenarios. With a 3.17mm shaft diameter, this pinion integrates seamlessly with standard brushless RC motor shafts, making it the ideal choice for anyone upgrading or maintaining their RC car UK setup. The engineering quality matches that found in professional racing components, yet remains affordable enough for recreational RC enthusiasts. Whether you're using this with a high-powered brushless system in a 1/10 buggy, truck or short course racer, or integrating it into a custom 1/8 scale competition build, this pinion delivers consistent, reliable performance lap after lap. The precision-ground tooth faces ensure minimal noise during operation whilst the hardened steel resists the micro-fracturing that can occur with softer materials when subjected to repeated shock loads during aggressive driving or competitive racing.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is a 48DP pinion gear and how does it work in an RC car? — A 48DP (48 Diametral Pitch) pinion gear is a small precision gear that mounts on the brushless motor shaft and meshes with a larger spur gear to transfer rotational power to the drivetrain. The 48DP specification indicates a fine-tooth pitch that ensures smooth, efficient power delivery. The pinion gear acts as a mechanical reduction system, converting the motor's high RPM output into lower wheel RPM with increased torque, allowing your RC car to accelerate and climb obstacles effectively.
  • Will this 24-tooth pinion fit my RC car? — This pinion is compatible with any RC car featuring a standard 3.17mm motor shaft and using 48DP spur gears. However, tooth count selection depends on your specific RC car model, desired gear ratio, and driving preferences. The 24-tooth configuration offers a moderate ratio suitable for balanced acceleration and top speed. We recommend checking your vehicle's manual or consulting with our RC Model Shop experts to confirm compatibility before purchase.
  • What's the difference between short-profile and long-profile pinion gears? — Short-profile pinions, like this Corally model, feature a more compact axial width that minimises mesh play with the spur gear and allows tighter drivetrain tolerances, resulting in improved power transmission efficiency and reduced noise. Long-profile pinions provide increased surface area for power transmission but may introduce slightly more drivetrain play. For modern competitive RC racing, short-profile pinions are preferred.
  • Why choose hardened steel over brass or aluminium pinions? — Hardened steel pinions offer significantly superior durability compared to brass or standard aluminium alternatives. The heat-treatment process increases material hardness and fatigue resistance, meaning hardened steel pinions resist tooth stripping, deformation and wear far more effectively. This results in longer service life, more consistent performance, and better reliability during competitive racing or high-stress driving situations. The minimal performance penalty is negligible for most RC applications.
  • How often should I replace my pinion gear? — With proper maintenance and care, a hardened steel pinion like this Corally model should last through hundreds of hours of RC car operation. However, replacement intervals depend on driving intensity, driving surface (grass, tarmac, carpet), and whether you perform regular maintenance. Inspect your pinion for visible tooth wear, stripped teeth, or excessive play every 10-15 hours of use. If you notice slower acceleration or unusual drivetrain noise, pinion replacement may be necessary.
  • Can I use this pinion with different tooth counts on my spur gear? — Technically yes, but gear ratio changes will alter your RC car's performance characteristics. Using this 24-tooth pinion with different spur gear tooth counts will change the overall gear ratio, affecting acceleration and top speed. Smaller spur gears increase acceleration but reduce top speed, whilst larger spur gears increase top speed but reduce acceleration. Consult your RC car manual or contact RC Model Shop for guidance on compatible gear ratios for your specific vehicle.
  • Is this suitable for beginners? — Whilst this is a precision component designed for performance applications, beginners can certainly use it as a replacement pinion or as part of a custom RC car build. However, installation requires basic mechanical knowledge and proper tools. If you're new to RC cars, we recommend purchasing a ready-to-run (RTR) model first, then upgrading components like this pinion as your skills develop. Our experienced team at RC Model Shop can provide guidance and support.
