Technical Performance

The Corally 48 DP Pinion Short Hardened Steel 35 Teeth represents the absolute pinnacle of modern pinion gear engineering, combining material science, precision manufacturing, and decades of RC racing expertise into a single critical drivetrain component. The hardened steel material selection is crucial; standard mild steel pinions wear rapidly under high-torque conditions and produce excessive noise, whilst Corally's specially formulated hardened steel resists micro-wear, maintains dimensional stability, and absorbs shock loads that occur during aggressive acceleration and cornering. The CNC cutting process produces teeth with flank angles and dedendum curves that are mathematically optimised for smooth meshing with spur gears, reducing backlash and ensuring that every ounce of motor torque translates directly into forward motion without energy loss to friction or vibration. The 48 DP pitch specification means the pinion has a module of approximately 0.529mm, making it compatible with a vast range of modern electric RC cars, buggies, and touring cars that have adopted this standard as the industry norm for competitive racing. The 35-tooth configuration delivers a specific gear reduction ratio that, when paired with appropriate spur gears, provides the balance between acceleration and top speed that competitive racers require; this tooth count is particularly popular on 200mm touring car chassis and off-road buggies where precision handling and consistent power delivery are paramount. The 3.17mm shaft diameter matches the standard motor shaft size found on most modern brushless and brushed motor designs used in ready-to-run and competition RC cars throughout the UK market. Built to exacting tolerances and marked for easy identification, this Corally pinion is the choice of discerning RC enthusiasts who refuse to compromise on quality or performance.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is a 48 DP pinion gear and why does it matter for my RC car? — A 48 DP pinion is a small motor gear that meshes with your car's larger spur gear to create the primary gear reduction in your drivetrain. The DP (diametral pitch) specification determines tooth size and spacing; 48 DP is the modern standard for many electric RC cars. Choosing the correct pinion tooth count directly affects your car's acceleration, top speed, and overall driveline efficiency, making it one of the most important tuning variables for competitive racing across the UK.
  • Will this 35-tooth pinion work with my RC car? — This pinion will work with any RC car designed around 48 DP gearing that features a 3.17mm motor shaft. Most modern brushless-powered electric RC cars, including popular touring cars, buggies, and truggy platforms, use these specifications. Check your vehicle's manual or contact our team at RC Model Shop to confirm compatibility before ordering.
  • What is the difference between this pinion and cheaper alternatives? — This Corally pinion is manufactured from hardened steel with CNC-cut teeth that maintain precise concentricity and perfect tooth geometry. Cheaper pinions are often made from softer metals or use less precise cutting methods, resulting in runout, vibration, premature wear, and noise. The Corally difference is immediately noticeable in smoother operation, reduced drivetrain noise, and significantly longer service life, making it a false economy to choose inferior alternatives.
  • How do I install this pinion gear on my RC car? — Installation is straightforward: remove your motor from its mount, slide off the old pinion gear using a 1.5mm hex key, and slide the new Corally pinion onto your motor shaft, aligning the drive key or slot. Secure it according to your motor's specifications and remount your motor. The process takes just minutes and requires only basic RC maintenance knowledge.
  • Will changing to a 35-tooth pinion make my car faster? — Pinion tooth count affects gear ratio; a 35-tooth pinion compared to a different tooth count will change your acceleration and top speed characteristics. Generally, more teeth equals higher top speed but slower acceleration, whilst fewer teeth provides quicker acceleration with lower top speed. The 35-tooth configuration is the popular choice for balanced performance across varied track conditions in competitive RC racing throughout the UK.
  • Is this suitable for beginners? — Whilst this is a high-quality component, pinion gear selection and replacement is typically an intermediate to advanced skill requiring understanding of gear ratios and drivetrain mechanics. Beginners may be better served by keeping their car's original gearing or consulting with experienced RC enthusiasts at RC Model Shop before making changes.
  • How long will this pinion last? — The hardened steel construction and precision CNC manufacturing mean this pinion will deliver thousands of kilometres of reliable service when properly maintained. Actual lifespan depends on driving intensity, track surface conditions, and maintenance practices, but Corally pinions are recognised as delivering exceptional longevity compared to budget alternatives.
  • Can I use this pinion with different spur gears? — Yes, the beauty of the 48 DP standard is its compatibility with the entire range of 48 DP spur gears available. Different spur gear tooth counts will change your overall gear ratio, allowing you to fine-tune performance for specific track conditions or racing formats throughout your RC hobby activities.
