Technical Performance

The Corally 48 DP Pinion represents cutting-edge precision gear manufacturing designed specifically for the demands of competitive RC racing. Built from special hardened steel rather than conventional materials, this pinion offers superior wear resistance and durability compared to standard alternatives, particularly important when running at high RPMs or on abrasive outdoor tracks. The 21-tooth configuration sits in the mid-range of pinion options, offering a balanced compromise between acceleration and top-end speed—perfect for mixed-condition tracks or for drivers seeking versatility. The CNC cutting process ensures that each individual tooth is shaped with micron-level accuracy, resulting in perfect involute geometry that minimises friction losses and maximises power transmission efficiency. With a shaft diameter of 3.17mm, this pinion is compatible with the vast majority of modern brushless and brushed motor options available to RC car UK enthusiasts, making it a universal upgrade component. The 4mm teeth width and 9mm overall gear length provide optimal surface contact area whilst maintaining the compact profile necessary for modern, space-constrained motor compartments. The 1.5mm hex key size for the grub screw (if applicable) indicates a precision-grade component designed for reliable, repeatable assembly. The hardened steel material and precision manufacturing process ensure exceptional runout tolerance, critical for vibration-free operation at high speeds. Whether you're upgrading from a standard plastic pinion or replacing worn steel gears, this Corally component will deliver noticeably smoother power delivery, reduced drivetrain wear, and improved overall handling characteristics that discerning RC racers will immediately appreciate.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is a 48 DP pinion and why does the module matter? — DP stands for Diametral Pitch, a measurement that defines how closely spaced the teeth on a gear are. 48 DP gears have 48 teeth per inch of diameter, making them a standard size in modern RC racing cars. The 48 DP specification is critical because it must match your vehicle's spur gear—mixing different DP sizes will result in poor meshing, noise, and drivetrain damage. This Corally pinion is specifically designed for 48 DP systems used in contemporary RC cars across the UK.
  • Will this pinion fit my RC car? — This pinion will fit any RC car equipped with a 48 DP gearbox and a 3.17mm diameter motor shaft. The 3.17mm shaft diameter is one of the most common motor shaft sizes in RC racing, used in both brushless and brushed motors. Before purchasing, verify that your vehicle uses 48 DP gears (check your manual or contact the vehicle manufacturer) and that your motor has a 3.17mm shaft. If you're unsure, contact RC Model Shop's expert team who can confirm compatibility with your specific setup.
  • What is the difference between a short pinion and a standard pinion? — Short pinions are compact versions that take up less space and typically weigh slightly less than longer alternatives, making them ideal for vehicles with tight motor compartments or weight-sensitive builds. Standard longer pinions may offer marginally more surface contact, but modern short designs like this Corally component (with 4mm teeth width) provide excellent durability whilst saving space and weight. For most RC racing applications, the short profile delivers superior performance without compromising durability.
  • Why is hardened steel better than plastic or standard steel? — Hardened steel undergoes a specialised heat treatment process that significantly increases its hardness and wear resistance compared to untreated steel or plastic alternatives. This means the teeth resist deformation and wear far longer, even under extreme loads or high-RPM operation. For serious RC racers, hardened steel pinions maintain their precise geometry throughout an entire season of racing, whereas plastic or softer steel gears can wear noticeably over weeks of use. The investment in a hardened steel pinion pays dividends through longevity and consistent performance.
  • What does CNC-cut mean and why does it matter? — CNC (Computer Numerical Control) cutting means the gear teeth are machined by computer-controlled equipment rather than stamped or cast, allowing for precision accuracy down to microns. This results in perfect involute tooth geometry, which is the theoretical ideal shape for smooth meshing. When your pinion meshes with the spur gear, perfectly shaped teeth distribute loads evenly and minimise friction, resulting in smoother acceleration, less noise, and reduced wear on both gears. CNC-cut gears are the standard in competitive RC racing for this reason.
  • How do I choose the right tooth count? — The tooth count determines your gear ratio. Fewer teeth (lower numbers) provide more torque and acceleration but lower top speed, whilst more teeth (higher numbers) reduce acceleration but increase top-end speed. The 21-tooth configuration in this pinion is a popular mid-range option suitable for mixed-condition tracks. To choose the optimal ratio, consider your motor's KV rating, your track conditions, and whether you prioritise acceleration or top speed. Corally offers this pinion in all standard tooth counts, allowing you to experiment and find your perfect setup.
  • Is this suitable for beginners? — Whilst this is a high-quality precision component, pinion replacement is a moderately advanced task requiring basic mechanical skills and tools (including a 1.5mm hex key). Beginners new to RC cars can certainly use this pinion, but should ensure they understand how to safely remove and install it, and how to properly mesh it with the spur gear. If you're new to RC racing, RC Model Shop's experienced team can provide guidance on installation and setup.
  • How often should I replace my pinion? — The lifespan depends on usage intensity and track conditions. Competitive racers running frequently may replace gears multiple times per season, whilst casual enthusiasts might use the same pinion for several seasons. Hardened steel gears like this Corally pinion last significantly longer than plastic or standard steel alternatives. You should inspect your pinion regularly for signs of wear, chipping, or damage. If you notice unusual noise from the drivetrain or visible tooth wear, it's time to replace it. Having a spare pinion on hand is a good practice for competitive racers.
  • What tools do I need to install this pinion? — At minimum, you'll need a 1.5mm hex key (Allen key) to secure the grub screw that holds the pinion on the motor shaft. You may also find it helpful to have a gear mesh gauge or feeler gauge to ensure proper spacing between the pinion and spur gear. A motor shaft holder or small vice can help stabilise the motor during installation. Most experienced RC enthusiasts have these basic tools already.
