Technical Performance
The Corally 64 DP Pinion Short Hardened Steel 18 Teeth represents the culmination of precision engineering and material science specifically optimised for RC car performance. Manufactured from special hardened steel using advanced CNC machinery, every aspect of this pinion has been engineered to deliver consistent, reliable performance. The 64 DP module specification places this pinion in the fine-pitch category, which is ideal for RC cars requiring precise gear ratios and smooth power delivery. The 18-tooth configuration offers a moderate gear ratio that strikes an excellent balance between acceleration and top speed, making it versatile enough for both circuit racing and recreational bashing. The 3.17mm motor shaft diameter accommodates standard brushless outrunner motors and many brushed motor configurations, making this pinion compatible with the vast majority of modern RC car drivetrain setups available in the UK hobby market. The 4mm teeth width provides ample contact surface for power transmission whilst maintaining the compact profile necessary for modern gearbox designs. At just 9mm in overall gear length, this short pinion design fits perfectly within standard RC car gearboxes without requiring modifications. The hex key size of 1.5mm means installation and removal uses standard RC hobby tools, and the marked tooth number ensures you always know exactly which gear ratio you have installed, eliminating costly setup errors. The ultra-precise CNC-cut tooth profile guarantees vibration-free operation, which is absolutely critical for maintaining handling consistency and ensuring your RC car performs predictably whether you're chasing lap times at the track or enjoying high-speed runs across open terrain. This level of precision is what separates premium gears from budget alternatives, and investing in Corally pinions means you're investing in reliability, performance consistency, and long-term durability.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What is a 64 DP pinion gear and why does the module matter? — DP stands for Diametral Pitch, which defines the tooth size relative to the gear's diameter. A 64 DP pinion has very small, fine teeth compared to lower DP numbers like 32 DP or 48 DP. This fine pitch is ideal for RC cars because it allows precise gear ratios, smooth operation, and compact gearbox designs. The 64 DP specification means this pinion is compatible with all other 64 DP gears, spur gears, and gearboxes designed for this module, making it a universal choice across many RC platforms available in the UK.
- What is the difference between this 18-tooth pinion and other tooth counts? — The tooth count directly affects your RC car's gear ratio, which determines acceleration and top speed characteristics. An 18-tooth pinion paired with a smaller spur gear provides faster acceleration but lower top speed (numerically higher gear ratio), whilst an 18-tooth pinion paired with a larger spur gear provides higher top speed but slower acceleration (numerically lower gear ratio). The 18-tooth configuration is a popular middle-ground choice that works well across various track conditions and driving styles. To find the perfect pinion tooth count for your needs, consider the specific spur gear you're using and what driving characteristics you prefer.
- Is this pinion suitable for beginners and casual RC enthusiasts? — Absolutely. Whilst this is a high-quality competition-grade component, it's equally suitable for beginners and weekend bashers. In fact, purchasing quality gears like the Corally 64 DP Pinion from the start means you'll spend less time troubleshooting drivetrain issues and more time enjoying your RC car. The durability of hardened steel means your investment will last through countless runs, making it excellent value for money whether you're racing competitively or enjoying casual recreational driving.
- What motor shaft sizes are compatible with this pinion? — This pinion features a 3.17mm bore diameter, which is the standard shaft size for most brushless outrunner motors and many brushed motor configurations used in modern RC cars. Before purchasing, verify your motor's shaft diameter is exactly 3.17mm. If your motor has a different shaft size (such as 5mm, which is common on larger RC cars), you'll need a different pinion. Always check your motor specifications and existing gearbox components to ensure compatibility before ordering.
- How do I install this pinion gear on my RC car? — Installation typically involves loosening your motor or motor mount, sliding the pinion onto the motor shaft until it reaches the correct mesh position with your spur gear, and then tightening the set screw using the provided 1.5mm hex key. Proper mesh is critical — your spur and pinion should have a small amount of play between them (typically a sheet of paper's thickness), with no binding or excessive gap. Consult your RC car's manual for specific installation instructions and mesh adjustment procedures, as exact methods vary between different RC platforms.
- Why is hardened steel better than other pinion materials? — Hardened steel provides superior durability, wear resistance, and strength compared to softer materials. It resists tooth stripping, maintains precise tooth geometry through extended use, and dramatically extends the service life of your pinion. This is especially important in competition settings or aggressive bashing where drivetrain components experience high loads. Whilst hardened steel pinions cost slightly more than alternatives, the extended lifespan and reliable performance make them excellent value for any serious RC car enthusiast.
- Can I use this pinion with different spur gears to change my gear ratio? — Yes, absolutely. The beauty of having a quality pinion like the Corally 64 DP is that you can pair it with different 64 DP spur gears to achieve various gear ratios. For example, pairing this 18-tooth pinion with a 73-tooth spur gives you one ratio, whilst pairing it with an 85-tooth spur gives you a lower ratio with higher top speed. By maintaining the same pinion and swapping only the spur gear, you can quickly optimise your RC car's performance for different track conditions without replacing the pinion every time.
- Is this pinion made in Europe and what quality standards does it meet? — Yes, the Corally 64 DP Pinion is proudly manufactured in Europe to exacting quality standards. Corally is known throughout the UK RC hobby community for precision engineering, quality materials, and rigorous quality control. Every pinion is produced on specialised CNC gear-cutting machinery and inspected for tooth shape perfection, concentricity, and overall dimensions. This European manufacturing heritage means you're investing in components that meet strict tolerances and deliver consistent, reliable performance.
