Overview

The Associated 12mm Big Bore Spring 72mm 2.20Lb (AS91639) is a genuine tuning component designed for serious RC enthusiasts who demand precision handling and responsive performance from their 12mm big bore suspension setups. As an official Associated part, this spring represents the gold standard in suspension tuning for competitive RC car racing and weekend bashers alike across the UK. Whether you're fine-tuning your RC10SC5M short course truck, dialling in your RC10T4.2 off-road buggy, or optimising your RC10T5M for competition, this spring offers the performance adjustability that separates champion setups from standard configurations.

Suspension tuning is one of the most critical aspects of RC car performance, and spring rate selection can make the difference between a loose, unpredictable platform and a well-balanced machine that responds precisely to driver input. The Associated 12mm Big Bore Spring with its 2.20 lb rate provides excellent handling balance and response characteristics for drivers who understand the importance of suspension geometry and spring selection in achieving optimal cornering speed, stability on jumps, and overall driving feel. This is a component for enthusiasts who take their RC hobby seriously and want genuine OEM parts from a trusted manufacturer.

Associated has engineered this spring specifically for vehicles with 12mm big bore suspension architecture, ensuring perfect fitment and reliable performance across multiple platform generations. For RC car UK enthusiasts looking to purchase quality spares and upgrades from established manufacturers, this genuine Associated component delivers exactly what you need for competition-grade tuning and setup optimisation.

Key Features

  • 12mm Big Bore Spring Design — This spring is engineered specifically for 12mm big bore suspension systems, meaning it integrates perfectly with compatible Associated platforms and delivers consistent performance characteristics that have been tested and refined by one of the world's most respected RC manufacturers.
  • 72mm Length — The 72mm length specification ensures precise fitment to your vehicle's suspension geometry, maintaining the correct ride height and suspension travel that the engineers at Associated designed into your platform for optimal handling characteristics.
  • 2.20 Pound Spring Rate — The 2.20 lb rate provides a medium spring softness that balances responsiveness with stability, making this an excellent choice for drivers who want their RC vehicle to feel planted under acceleration and braking whilst remaining responsive through corners and over terrain irregularities.
  • Genuine Associated Component — As an official Associated part (AS91639), this spring is manufactured to the exact specifications developed by the engineering team at Team Associated, ensuring quality, consistency and compatibility with your vehicle across production batches.
  • Fine-Tuning Capability — Spring rate selection is a fundamental aspect of suspension tuning, and having access to genuine parts in various rates allows you to experiment with setup changes and dial in the exact handling characteristics your driving style demands.
  • Broad Vehicle Compatibility — This spring is designed for use across multiple current-generation Associated platforms including the RC10SC5M, RC10T4.2, and RC10T5M, making it a valuable part to keep in your spares box if you own any of these vehicles.

Technical Performance

The Associated 12mm Big Bore Spring represents precision engineering in suspension tuning components. Manufactured from high-quality spring steel and heat-treated for consistent performance, this spring maintains its characteristics across thousands of kilometres of driving without sagging or losing its intended spring rate. The 2.20 lb rate sits in the medium range of associated spring options, making it suitable for drivers of varying skill levels who want predictable, responsive handling without the harshness of stiffer springs or the wallowing feeling of much softer rates. The 72mm length is calibrated to work with the specific shock absorber architecture found in modern Associated competition platforms, ensuring that when installed, your vehicle maintains the proper suspension geometry, correct static ride height, and appropriate suspension travel. The spring works in conjunction with your dampers and anti-roll bar setup to create a complete suspension system, and changing spring rate is one of the most effective ways to adjust your vehicle's handling balance and overall feel. Quality construction means this spring will retain its performance characteristics race after race, practice session after practice session, without degradation. For UK RC car enthusiasts engaged in competition or serious recreational driving, genuine OEM springs like this AS91639 component are essential spares to have available for testing different setup configurations and maintaining backup spares for your vehicles.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What vehicles does the Associated 12mm Big Bore Spring AS91639 fit? — This genuine Associated spring is designed for use on the RC10SC5M short course truck, RC10T4.2 off-road buggy, and RC10T5M competition buggy platform, as well as other vehicles equipped with 12mm big bore suspension architecture. Always verify your specific vehicle model before purchasing to ensure compatibility.
  • Why would I need to change my spring rate on my RC car? — Spring rate directly affects how your RC vehicle handles over terrain, responds to steering input, and balances grip levels between the front and rear. A softer spring rate (lower numbers) provides more grip and comfort but can feel wallowing, whilst a stiffer rate (higher numbers) reduces squat and body roll but can feel twitchy. The 2.20 lb rate offered here provides a balanced middle ground suitable for most drivers and conditions. Experimenting with different spring rates is a fundamental part of RC setup optimisation and allows you to personalise your vehicle's handling to suit your driving style and local track conditions.
  • Is this spring suitable for beginners? — Absolutely. Whilst suspension tuning is an advanced topic, this spring rate is neither excessively soft nor excessively stiff, making it suitable for drivers across the skill spectrum. Beginners will find the handling predictable and responsive, whilst experienced drivers can use it as a foundation for further setup experimentation and fine-tuning.
  • What is the difference between this 2.20 lb spring and other spring rates? — Associated manufactures springs in a range of rates measured in pounds, with lower numbers being softer and higher numbers being stiffer. The 2.20 lb rate sits in the medium range, offering a balance between responsiveness and stability. Softer springs (1.6 lb, 1.8 lb) provide more grip and smoother feel but can cause excessive body roll and loose handling. Stiffer springs (2.4 lb, 2.6 lb) reduce squat and roll, tightening the feel and providing more responsive steering but potentially sacrificing grip on bumpy terrain. Choosing the correct rate depends on track conditions, your driving style, and your vehicle setup preferences.
  • How long does an Associated spring last? — Genuine Associated springs are engineered for durability and consistency. With proper care, springs maintain their rated performance for years of regular use. They don't wear out like damper oil does, but they can lose their rate over extended periods if exposed to extreme heat or stress. Quality springs like this AS91639 component are designed to be reliable, long-lasting spares that represent excellent value for serious RC enthusiasts.
  • Can I mix and match springs from different manufacturers? — Whilst it may be possible to fit springs from other manufacturers, it is not recommended. Associated has engineered this spring specifically for compatibility with their platforms, accounting for shock absorber design, eye-to-eye length, and suspension geometry. Using genuine Associated parts ensures perfect fitment and predictable performance.
