Overview

The Team Associated 16mm Front Springs in brown (4.45 lb/in) represent a significant advancement in suspension tuning for competitive 1/8 scale RC car racing in the UK and beyond. These springs form part of Team Associated's exciting new 1.5D wire diameter lineup, specifically engineered to deliver superior performance on ungroomed and bumpy track surfaces where grip is at a premium. Whether you're competing at domestic events or preparing your RC8B4.1 for challenging conditions like those encountered at DNC and Silver State races, these precision-engineered springs offer the fine-tuning capability that serious RC racers demand.

Team Associated's engineering team identified a genuine performance gap during their ongoing 1:8 scale development programme. Whilst the previous generation of 1.6mm wire diameter springs performed exceptionally well on higher grip, well-maintained fast layouts, they struggled to maintain consistent grip when transitioning to ungroomed surfaces with variable traction. The solution lay in reducing the wire diameter to precisely 1.50mm (1.5D), a seemingly small change that fundamentally alters the spring's natural frequency and stress characteristics. This innovative approach allows the suspension to compress and conform more easily to track surface irregularities in low-grip conditions, translating to improved traction and more predictable handling when you need it most.

These brown-coded front springs are supplied as individual pairs and are an essential component for anyone serious about optimising their RC buggy's suspension for variable track conditions. Perfectly suited to competitive RC enthusiasts across the UK who demand championship-level performance, these springs showcase Team Associated's commitment to providing racers with the tools they need to succeed on any surface.

Key Features

  • 1.5mm Wire Diameter (1.5D) — The reduced wire diameter changes the spring's natural frequency and stress distribution, allowing it to compress and conform more easily to track surface variations in lower grip conditions, providing superior traction and bump compliance compared to traditional 1.6mm springs.
  • 4.45 lb/in Spring Rate — This soft spring rate is part of the new brown-coded lineup that sits below the standard kit 5.1 lb/in white spring, offering additional tuning options for drivers working with lower-grip track conditions where softer suspension geometry is essential.
  • 68mm Free Length (L68) — The front springs have been shortened from the previous 70mm specification to optimise the suspension package with the RC8B4.1's new lower shock towers, ensuring correct ride height and suspension geometry with zero modification required.
  • 8.5 Total Coils (8.5T) — This specific coil count is precisely calculated to deliver the desired spring rate and natural frequency characteristics needed for ungroomed track performance.
  • Dual-End Colour Marking — Both ends of each spring are colour-marked brown to clearly distinguish 1.5D springs from the previous generation 1.6D springs (which feature colour marking on one end only), eliminating any risk of mixing different spring generations during suspension setup.
  • Tight Coil Variation (±0.25 Coils) — Each spring in the lineup is tightly grouped with only 0.25 coil variation across the range, enabling fine-tuning of your suspension rate to match specific grip levels and delivering more consistent and predictable handling characteristics.
  • Designed for RC8B4.1 Platform — These springs are engineered specifically for Team Associated's flagship RC8B4.1 competition buggy and are fully compatible with 16mm shock absorbers, making them a direct, no-modification installation.
  • Part of Comprehensive Spring Lineup — The 1.5D front spring range spans 4.45 to 5.05 lb/in, providing multiple tuning options below the standard 5.1 lb/in white spring, giving RC racers the flexibility to dial in the perfect suspension for their specific track conditions.

Technical Performance

These Team Associated 16mm front springs deliver the engineering precision that competitive RC car racing demands. The reduction from 1.6mm to 1.5mm wire diameter is not simply a cosmetic change—it fundamentally alters the spring's mechanical properties. The thinner wire diameter reduces the stress concentration on the material, allowing the spring to compress more progressively and conform more readily to track surface irregularities without losing its ability to support the vehicle's weight. This is particularly valuable on ungroomed surfaces where traditional stiffer springs fail to maintain consistent contact with the track, resulting in reduced grip and unpredictable handling. The 4.45 lb/in rate represents a softer tuning option, complemented by the companion 4.65, 4.85, and 5.05 lb/in options within the 1.5D range, allowing racers to make precise adjustments to their suspension geometry to match changing track conditions throughout a competition day. The springs are manufactured to exacting standards with tight coil variation (±0.25 coils), ensuring that each spring in your suspension system delivers identical characteristics and won't introduce handling inconsistencies. The shortened 68mm length is specifically designed for the RC8B4.1's new lower shock tower geometry, optimising the suspension's effective travel range and maintaining the correct ride height without the need for modification. Each spring is individually colour-marked on both ends, making spring identification during maintenance and setup changes quick and foolproof. For UK-based RC racers preparing vehicles for competition or simply looking to improve their RC buggy's handling on variable surfaces, these springs represent an investment in proven performance technology backed by Team Associated's reputation as a leader in 1:8 scale off-road racing.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is the difference between 1.5D and 1.6D springs for RC buggies? — The 1.5D springs feature a reduced 1.50mm wire diameter compared to the traditional 1.6mm (1.6D) found on previous Team Associated kits. This seemingly small change has significant performance implications: the thinner wire changes the spring's natural frequency and how stress is distributed through the wire, allowing 1.5D springs to compress more easily and conform better to track surface irregularities. This makes 1.5D springs ideal for ungroomed, low-grip surfaces where maintaining traction is challenging. The previous 1.6D springs still perform excellently on high-grip, well-maintained tracks. You can easily identify which type you have because 1.5D springs are colour-marked on both ends, whilst 1.6D springs have colour marking on one end only.
  • What track conditions are these springs best suited for? — These brown 4.45 lb/in springs are specifically engineered for ungroomed and bumpy track surfaces where traction is variable. They excel in low-grip conditions and are ideal for outdoor racing venues where the track surface cannot be perfectly maintained. If you primarily race on well-groomed, high-grip indoor or outdoor tracks, you may prefer stiffer spring rates or the traditional 1.6D springs. The 4.45 lb/in rate is the softest option in the 1.5D front spring lineup, making it the best choice for maximising traction in very low-grip situations.
  • Will these springs fit my RC8B4 or older RC8 models? — Yes, the 68mm front springs are designed to fit 16mm shock absorbers found on the RC8B4.1, RC8B4.1e, RC8B4, and older RC8 models. However, you should note that Team Associated has optimised these springs specifically for the RC8B4.1's new lower shock towers. If you're installing them on older models with higher shock tower geometry, your ride height and suspension geometry may differ from the intended setup, and you may need to adjust your vehicle's geometry accordingly. For maximum performance and ease of installation, these springs are best suited to RC8B4.1 and RC8B4.1e platforms.
  • How many springs do I need, and do they come in pairs? — This product is supplied as one pair of front springs. A complete front suspension setup requires two springs (one for each front shock), so this purchase will give you the complete front spring set needed for your vehicle. If you also want to upgrade your rear suspension, Team Associated offers matching 1.5D rear springs in rates ranging from 3.40 to 3.75 lb/in, shortened to 83mm to match the RC8B4.1's new geometry.
  • What makes these springs suitable for competitive racing? — Team Associated developed this 1.5D lineup specifically for competitive 1:8 scale RC racing. The team identified performance gaps during development for demanding racing venues like DNC and Silver State races, where ungroomed surfaces are the norm. Each spring is manufactured with tight coil variation (±0.25 coils), meaning all springs in the range deliver consistent rate characteristics without the unpredictable handling variations that loose manufacturing tolerances create. This precision is essential for competitive racing where consistency lap after lap determines results. The availability of multiple rates (4.45, 4.65, 4.85, and 5.05 lb/in) allows you to make fine adjustments to match grip levels and track conditions throughout a competition day, which is exactly what winning racers need.
  • How do I identify which spring rate I have? — Each Team Associated 1.5D spring is colour-coded on both ends to clearly indicate its rate: brown springs are 4.45 lb/in. This dual-end marking makes identification quick and easy, and eliminates any confusion when changing springs during a race meeting or maintenance session. The colour coding is printed clearly and is visible at a glance without needing to measure or calculate spring rates.
