Overview
The Associated RC8B3/RC8B3.1/RC8B3.2 FT Pillow Ball in aluminium represents a precision upgrade component designed for serious RC buggy enthusiasts across the UK. This Factory Team (FT) series component is engineered to directly replace the standard steel pillow ball assembly (#81067) supplied with the RC8B3 and RC8B3e kit, offering a measurable performance enhancement that competitive drivers and weekend racers alike will immediately appreciate. Whether you're running on a smooth track UK circuit or preparing your RC buggy for the next big competition, this aluminium upgrade delivers the steering response and handling characteristics that separate winning setups from standard configurations.
Manufactured by Associated Electrics, one of the most respected names in RC buggy racing, the FT Aluminium Pillow Ball is a direct result of factory-level engineering and real-world track testing. This component is not simply a cosmetic upgrade—it's a functional performance enhancement that reduces un-sprung mass in the front steering block assembly, which directly translates to more responsive and aggressive steering characteristics. For drivers who demand precision control and are willing to fine-tune their RC cars for optimal performance, this component offers genuine advantages, particularly on high-grip track surfaces where every millisecond of steering response counts.
Available as a single unit with part number AS81068, the FT Aluminium Pillow Ball is supplied ready to install and maintains full compatibility with a comprehensive range of Associated RC models. From the entry-level RC8B3 platform through to the advanced RC8B4 series, and across both buggy and truck variants, this component integrates seamlessly into existing setups. RC car enthusiasts shopping in the UK will find this to be an excellent investment for upgrading existing buggies or fine-tuning competition-ready platforms.
Key Features
- Factory Team Aluminium Construction — The pillow ball is precision-manufactured from high-grade aluminium as part of Associated's Factory Team (FT) upgrade line, which means you're getting components that have been validated by professional race teams and drivers competing at the highest levels of RC buggy racing.
- Reduced Un-sprung Mass — By replacing the heavier standard steel pillow balls with these lightweight aluminium alternatives, the front steering block assembly experiences a reduction in un-sprung mass, which improves suspension compliance and allows the chassis to respond more quickly to track inputs.
- More Aggressive Steering Response — The weight reduction directly contributes to sharper, more responsive steering characteristics, giving drivers better control and feedback through the transmitter, which is particularly beneficial on high-grip track surfaces.
- Optimised for Smooth Track Conditions — These pillow balls are specifically engineered to deliver maximum performance benefit on smooth tracks with high grip levels, making them ideal for prepared indoor circuits and premium outdoor racing facilities across the UK.
- Direct Replacement Component — This is not an experimental or speculative upgrade; it's a direct replacement for the standard steel version, meaning installation is straightforward and compatibility is guaranteed with no modifications required.
- Broad Compatibility Range — The AS81068 fits multiple generations of Associated RC buggies and trucks, including the RC8B3, RC8B3.1, RC8B3.2, RC8B4, and their electronic (e) variants, as well as compatible T-series truck platforms.
- Single Unit Package — Each order contains one pillow ball assembly (package quantity: 1), allowing you to replace individual components or upgrade one steering block at a time as part of a systematic performance tuning process.
Technical Performance
The Associated RC8B3/RC8B3.1/RC8B3.2 FT Pillow Ball demonstrates the engineering philosophy behind Factory Team upgrades—making measurable performance improvements through material selection and mass optimisation rather than adding complexity. The shift from steel to aluminium in the pillow ball assembly represents a sophisticated understanding of vehicle dynamics in RC buggy racing. Un-sprung mass—the weight that is not supported by the suspension system—has a disproportionate effect on handling characteristics. When this mass is reduced, the suspension responds more quickly to bumps and track irregularities, the wheels maintain contact with the track surface more effectively, and the steering system delivers faster feedback to the driver. This becomes increasingly noticeable as track grip levels increase and driving speeds approach the limits of traction. On high-grip surfaces—such as those found at premium indoor racing venues throughout the UK or well-maintained outdoor tracks—the aluminium pillow balls allow drivers to push harder with greater confidence, as the improved steering response enables quicker directional changes and more precise line selection. The construction quality reflects Associated's 75+ years of RC racing heritage, with precision manufacturing tolerances that ensure smooth operation and consistent performance across multiple runs and long practice sessions. These are not cosmetic upgrades; they are functional components that measurably alter how your RC buggy responds to driver inputs, making them particularly valuable for drivers who are serious about lap time improvement and competitive performance.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Which RC cars does the Associated FT Aluminium Pillow Ball fit? — This component is compatible with the RC8B3, RC8B3.1, RC8B3.1e, RC8B3.2, RC8B3.2e, RC8B3e, RC8B4, RC8B4.1, RC8B4.1e, RC8B4e, RC8T3, RC8T3.1, RC8T3.1e, RC8T3.2, RC8T3.2e, RC8T3e, RC8T4, and RC8T4e models. This broad compatibility makes it an excellent upgrade for anyone running newer or legacy Associated racing platforms.
- What is the benefit of aluminium pillow balls over steel? — The primary benefit is weight reduction, which decreases un-sprung mass in the front steering block assembly. This results in faster suspension response, improved steering feel, and more aggressive handling characteristics—benefits that are most noticeable on smooth, high-grip track surfaces where steering precision is critical for lap time improvement.
- Are these pillow balls suitable for street bashing or off-road use? — These components are specifically designed and optimised for smooth track conditions with high grip levels. While they will function in rougher environments, their performance advantages are realised primarily on prepared racing surfaces, making them best suited for competitive drivers using indoor tracks or well-maintained outdoor circuits rather than casual bashers running on rough terrain.
- Do I need to replace both front pillow balls or just one? — Associated supplies this component individually (package quantity: 1), so you can choose to upgrade one pillow ball at a time or purchase multiples to perform a complete front-end upgrade. Many drivers perform a full upgrade for balanced handling, but some prefer to upgrade incrementally as part of a systematic tuning process.
- How difficult is installation? — As a direct replacement component for the standard steel pillow balls, installation is straightforward for anyone with basic RC maintenance experience. Associated provides detailed pillow ball instructions with part number 81068, which are available as a downloadable PDF document to guide you through the installation process.
- Is this a Factory Team (FT) component? — Yes, this is part of Associated's Factory Team upgrade line, which means it has been validated by professional race teams and is engineered to the same standards used in competitive RC racing. Factory Team components represent the highest level of performance and quality within the Associated product range.
- What is the part number and barcode? — The part number is AS81068 with barcode 784695810686. This information is useful for online ordering, inventory tracking, and verifying authenticity of genuine Associated components.
