Available through RC retailers across the UK, the SG1212MG has become a trusted choice for competitive glider pilots and recreational flyers alike who refuse to compromise on servo quality.

What sets the SG1212MG apart in the crowded servo market is its complete understanding of the specific requirements that glider pilots face. Unlike general-purpose servos, this model was engineered from the ground up with glider applications in mind—something that shows in every aspect of its design, from its ultra-thin 10mm profile through to its precisely calibrated speed and torque specifications.

Key Features

  • High Voltage Digital Brushless Design — This servo operates at 7.4V for maximum performance and uses brushless digital technology to eliminate the mechanical wear associated with brushed motors, ensuring longer service life and more consistent control response across thousands of flight hours.
  • Ultra-Slim 10mm Profile — The exceptionally thin case design makes this servo ideal for installation in the narrow wing cavities of gliders and high-speed models, where space is at an absolute premium and every millimetre of clearance matters for aerodynamic efficiency.
  • 12-Bit Digital Resolution (4096 Steps) — The servo operates with an incredibly high 4096-point resolution, which translates to ultra-precise movement control and superior smoothness during flight, eliminating the stepped movements sometimes seen in lower-resolution servos.
  • Lightweight Aluminium Case — Constructed from full aluminium rather than plastic, the case reduces overall weight while simultaneously providing excellent thermal dissipation to prevent heat buildup during extended flight sessions, keeping the servo cool and maintaining peak performance.
  • Backlash Double Ball Bearing Gears — The servo features metal gears supported by two ball bearings, which virtually eliminate backlash and ensure that control inputs produce immediate, precise responses without any lag or lost motion in the control chain.
  • Exceptional Speed Performance — At 7.4V, this servo achieves a transit time of just 0.12 seconds per 60 degrees of rotation, making it one of the fastest servos available for glider applications and ensuring rapid response to control inputs during dynamic flight manoeuvres.
  • Impressive High-Voltage Torque — Delivering 8.0kg of torque (111.1oz-in) at 7.4V, this servo provides more than sufficient force to operate control surfaces reliably even in turbulent air conditions, whilst the 6.0kg rating at 6V offers flexibility for different power system configurations.
  • Metal Gearing Throughout — All internal gears are metal rather than plastic, significantly improving durability and allowing the servo to handle the cumulative stress of repeated control inputs over years of regular use without stripping or wearing prematurely.
  • 21-Tooth Spline Servo Horn — The included servo horn features a standard 21-tooth spline configuration, providing excellent compatibility with aftermarket linkages, pushrods and control horns commonly used in glider installations across the UK RC hobby community.

Technical Performance

The Savox SG1212MG represents a masterclass in servo engineering for specialist RC applications. At just 27 grams in weight with overall dimensions of 30.0 x 10.0 x 42mm, this is a servo that understands the unforgiving physics of glider flight where every gram counts against altitude performance and wing flutter characteristics. The ultra-thin 10mm depth is the critical specification that makes this servo unique—standard servos typically measure 20mm or more in depth, making them impossible to fit within the structural constraints of modern glider wings without significant modification that would compromise aerodynamic integrity or structural strength. The SG1212MG was engineered specifically to solve this problem without sacrificing performance.

Performance-wise, the servo delivers extraordinary speed and precision. Operating at 7.4V (high voltage mode), it achieves a transit time of 0.12 seconds per 60-degree rotation, which places it amongst the fastest servos available for glider applications. At 6V operation, the speed reduces to 0.15 seconds per 60 degrees, still exceptionally quick whilst also reducing electrical draw should battery constraints become relevant in a particular aircraft design. The torque specification of 8.0kg/cm (111.1oz-in) at 7.4V provides plenty of force to operate even larger control surfaces against aerodynamic loads, pitch loads and the buffeting effects of thermal turbulence. This torque figure is genuinely useful rather than merely impressive—it ensures reliable, slip-free control actuation in all conditions a glider pilot might reasonably encounter.

The construction quality is immediately apparent when handling this servo. The full aluminium case serves multiple purposes: it reduces weight compared to traditional plastic cases, provides structural rigidity that prevents case flexing under load, and crucially allows heat generated by the brushless motor to dissipate quickly into the surrounding air. Heat management is essential in any servo, but particularly important in high-speed digital servos like this one that operate continuously throughout a flight. The backlash double ball bearing gear arrangement demonstrates engineering sophistication—ball bearings reduce friction and wear compared to plastic bushings, whilst the specific focus on backlash elimination means that control inputs translate directly into servo horn movement without any dead zone where the input is absorbed by gear tooth clearance. This is particularly important for glider applications where precise pitch and yaw control directly affects thermal soaring efficiency and flight stability characteristics.

The digital brushless motor technology eliminates the mechanical wear associated with traditional brush-type motors. Carbon brushes gradually wear away through use, causing increasing friction and performance degradation over time. By contrast, the brushless design in the SG1212MG can operate for thousands of hours whilst maintaining identical performance characteristics—something that becomes relevant if you fly your gliders regularly throughout the year. The 12-bit (4096-step) digital resolution represents the cutting edge of servo technology, offering smoothness and precision that analogue servos cannot match. This translates to more natural control feel and reduced jerkiness, particularly noticeable during thermal soaring when subtle control inputs are continuously being made to maintain optimum thermal centering.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is the Savox SG1212MG suitable for beginners or only experienced pilots? — Whilst this servo is fully capable of operating in beginner-level gliders, it is primarily engineered for more advanced applications where its exceptional speed, precision and lightweight characteristics provide tangible benefits. Beginners would find it performs excellently, but its ultra-thin profile makes it most relevant for purpose-built glider wings rather than general-purpose RC aircraft. If you're building your first glider specifically, it's an excellent choice; if you're retrofitting a servo into an existing aircraft, check compatibility first as not all designs accommodate 10mm-profile servos.
  • What power system do I need for the Savox SG1212MG servo? — This is a high-voltage servo designed for 7.4V operation, which corresponds to a 2S LiPo battery configuration (2 cells x 3.7V nominal). The servo will also operate at lower voltages down to 6V, making it compatible with older 6V NiMH battery systems, but performance specifications are optimised at 7.4V. Ensure your receiver and battery system can reliably deliver stable 7.4V power, as the servo's performance is directly dependent on receiving clean, regulated voltage without brownout or voltage sag during peak current draw periods.
  • How does the 10mm depth compare to other glider servos available in the UK market? — The 10mm profile is exceptionally thin. Most standard RC servos measure between 20-24mm in depth, making them impractical for installation in thin glider wings without major structural modification. This SG1212MG is specifically engineered to fit within the dimensional constraints of modern glider wing designs whilst maintaining full performance. If you're building a performance glider and space is critically limited, this is one of the very few servos that can physically fit without compromise.
  • What is the difference between the SG1212MG and other Savox servo models? — The SG1212MG is specifically optimised for glider and thin-profile applications, with its defining characteristic being the ultra-slim 10mm case depth. Other Savox models in their range may offer higher torque figures for heavier aircraft or different applications, but none match the SG1212MG's combination of speed, precision and ultra-thin profile specifically engineered for glider wings. The 12-bit digital resolution (4096 steps) represents their highest precision offering, delivering smoother, more precise control than lower-resolution models.
  • Is the Savox SG1212MG waterproof or weather-resistant? — Whilst this servo is constructed to professional manufacturing standards with quality components, it is not formally rated as waterproof or sealed against moisture ingress. For glider applications this is typically not a significant concern as the servo operates inside the fuselage, protected from rain and weather. However, if your gliders are exposed to wet conditions during transport or storage, ensure proper protection and consider storing the aircraft in dry conditions to prevent potential corrosion of internal components.
  • How many servos can I connect to my glider setup? — This depends entirely on your specific receiver and power system. A typical 2-channel glider setup (aileron and rudder control) requires just one servo. Some gliders include elevator control, requiring two servos. More advanced setups might include flap servos. The SG1212MG is fully compatible with any standard RC receiver; simply ensure your battery and receiver have sufficient current capacity to power all servos simultaneously without voltage sag that would degrade performance.
  • What warranty and support does Savox provide? — All Savox servos, including the SG1212MG, are backed by a comprehensive 1-year warranty from the date of purchase, covering manufacturing defects and component failures. Savox USA provides direct customer support during business hours (Monday-Friday, 8:00-16:00 Mountain Time) via telephone and email for any technical questions or warranty claims. This warranty provides genuine peace of mind that your investment is protected.
