Overview
The RPM Traxxas Unlimited Desert Racer Trailing Arms (RPM81282) represent a significant upgrade for one of the most popular high-performance RC short course trucks available in the UK. The Traxxas Unlimited Desert Racer is a scale work of art with performance to match, but RPM customers have consistently reported that the stock trailing arms are a weak link in the suspension system. If you're tired of bending and breaking fragile stock trailing arms during aggressive bashing or competitive racing, RPM has engineered the answer with these incredibly tough aftermarket trailing arms. Whether you're a seasoned RC enthusiast running a competition-grade short course truck or a weekend basher pushing your UDR to its limits, these RPM trailing arms deliver the durability and reliability you need to keep your RC car UK running without constant repairs.
RPM's trailing arms are hands down some of the toughest and most innovative trailing arms available on the market today. These aren't minor tweaks to the original design—they represent a fundamental engineering approach to solving the trailing arm weakness that has plagued countless UDR owners. When you upgrade to RPM trailing arms, you're investing in components that have been specifically designed and tested for the demands of aggressive off-road RC driving. The result is a suspension setup that can handle the punishment that comes with serious RC racing or bashing, making these trailing arms an essential upgrade for any Traxxas Unlimited Desert Racer owner who wants reliability without compromise.
RPM Trailing Arms are manufactured in the USA from engineering-grade nylon and come factory-backed with a limited lifetime breakage warranty, giving you confidence in your purchase. These suspension components are sold as a pair and are engineered to work seamlessly with the Traxxas UDR platform, whether you're running the Pro-Scale 4WD RTR version with Fox Racing suspension or the Rigid Industries variant. The durability and performance improvements are substantial enough that experienced RC car enthusiasts across the UK consider these arms a mandatory upgrade rather than an optional accessory.
Key Features
- 40% Increased Wall Thickness Around Shock Mounts — RPM engineers identified the shock mount area as particularly vulnerable to damage and bending, so they increased wall thickness by approximately 40% in these critical zones. This substantial increase in material directly translates to dramatically improved durability and resistance to impact damage, meaning your trailing arms will survive the hard landings and aggressive cornering that destroy stock Traxxas components.
- 12% Additional Material Around Pivot Balls — The pivot ball area, which experiences constant rotational stress and lateral loading, receives an extra 12% more material, using up all available space at the axle mount. This engineering enhancement provides superior strength at the connection points where the arms flex and articulate, reducing the likelihood of stress fractures that commonly occur with stock arms.
- Squared-Off Bottom Design — Unlike the rounded bottoms of stock trailing arms, RPM's squared-off bottom design serves a dual purpose: it provides increased ground clearance and allows for the integration of RPM's unique reversible trailing arm skid plates (RPM #81362, sold separately). This squared-off geometry also contributes to a more rigid arm structure overall.
- Engineering-Grade Nylon Construction — These arms are precision-molded from high-quality engineering-grade nylon, a material selected specifically for its superior impact resistance, flexibility under load, and longevity compared to standard plastics. Engineering-grade nylon provides the ideal balance between rigidity and impact absorption that RC applications demand.
- Compatible with Reversible Skid Plates — The squared-off design enables compatibility with RPM's innovative #81362 Trailing Arm Skid Plates, which are sold separately. These skid plates protect your new arms from abrasion and impact damage, and they're reversible—flip them over to double their service life and maximise your investment.
- Limited Lifetime Breakage Warranty — RPM backs these arms with a limited lifetime breakage warranty, demonstrating their confidence in the product's durability. This factory warranty provides peace of mind and shows that RPM stands behind the quality of their engineering.
- Sold as a Pair — These trailing arms are supplied as a complete pair, meaning you get both rear arms needed for a full suspension upgrade. No need to purchase separately or worry about mixing old and new components.
- Direct Replacement for Stock Traxxas #8544 — These RPM arms are engineered as direct replacements for the original Traxxas #8544 trailing arms, making installation straightforward without requiring frame modifications or additional hardware beyond your standard RC toolkit.
Technical Performance
The engineering behind these trailing arms represents a thoughtful approach to solving real-world durability problems that plague stock Traxxas components in demanding conditions. When you examine the specifications, the differences become clear: a 40% increase in wall thickness around shock mounts combined with 12% additional material around pivot balls fundamentally changes how these arms respond to the stresses of high-speed running, big jumps, and aggressive cornering. The material selection—engineering-grade nylon—is crucial here; this isn't the same plastic used in budget RC components. Engineering-grade nylon offers superior impact resistance whilst maintaining the necessary flexibility to absorb shock loads without becoming brittle. The precision moulding process ensures consistent wall thickness and structural integrity across the entire arm. The squared-off bottom design isn't merely aesthetic; it increases the structural rigidity of the arm by creating additional bracing geometry that resists twisting and bending forces. These arms are manufactured in the USA under quality control standards that ensure each pair meets RPM's exacting specifications. For 1/10-scale short course truck racing and bashing, where trailing arms endure constant articulation and occasional high-impact collisions, this level of engineering excellence translates directly into longer intervals between suspension maintenance and fewer mid-session failures that interrupt your RC fun or competitive running.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Are RPM Trailing Arms better than stock Traxxas arms for the Unlimited Desert Racer? — Yes, definitively. RPM engineers specifically identified the stock Traxxas #8544 trailing arms as a weak point in the UDR platform based on consistent customer feedback. The improvements are substantial: 40% thicker walls around shock mounts, 12% more material at pivot balls, and a squared-off design that increases rigidity. These aren't minor cosmetic changes but fundamental engineering improvements that directly address the durability issues plaguing stock components. Many UK RC enthusiasts consider this upgrade essential rather than optional.
- Will these arms work with my Traxxas Unlimited Desert Racer? — These RPM #81282 Trailing Arms are engineered specifically for the Traxxas UDR Pro-Scale 4WD platform, including both the Fox Racing and Rigid Industries variants (models TRX85086-4-FOX1 and TRX85086-4-RGD1). They are direct replacements for the stock Traxxas #8544 arms and require no frame modifications. Installation is straightforward and compatible with your existing suspension setup.
- Can I use these arms with optional RPM Skid Plates? — Yes, and this is one of the key advantages of the squared-off bottom design. The optional RPM #81362 Trailing Arm Skid Plates are engineered to work exclusively with these RPM #81282 arms. These skid plates provide additional protection against abrasion and impact damage, and they're reversible—once one side is worn, flip them over for double the service life. The skid plates are sold separately.
- How long do these trailing arms typically last? — With proper maintenance and typical UK bashing or racing use, these RPM arms will significantly outlast stock Traxxas components. The engineering-grade nylon construction and thicker walls dramatically extend service life. Many users report years of trouble-free operation, particularly compared to stock arms that often bend or crack after a few months of aggressive use. These arms are backed by a limited lifetime breakage warranty, reflecting RPM's confidence in their durability.
- Are these arms waterproof? — Like all RC suspension components, these nylon arms are water-resistant and can handle wet grass, muddy terrain, and light water crossings typical of outdoor RC running in the UK. However, they shouldn't be submerged for extended periods or exposed to saltwater. Rinse them with fresh water after running in wet or muddy conditions to maintain optimal performance.
- What tools do I need to install these arms? — Installation requires basic RC tools: a socket set or hex wrenches for the fasteners, and potentially a small Phillips head screwdriver depending on your specific setup. No special tools or alignment equipment is necessary. If you're new to RC suspension work, there are numerous installation guides available online that walk through the process step-by-step. Most experienced RC enthusiasts can complete the installation in under 15 minutes per arm.
- Are these a beginner-friendly upgrade? — Whilst these are definitely suitable for all experience levels, they're perhaps most valuable to more experienced RC drivers who push their cars harder and thus experience more trailing arm failures. Beginners benefit from the improved durability, but the advantages become most apparent when running aggressively or competitively. If you're just starting with RC cars, stock arms will work fine initially, but upgrading to these RPM arms is a smart preventative investment.
