Overview
The FTX Outback Hi-Rock 17T RC550 Motor is a precision-engineered brushed motor purpose-built for rock crawlers and trail vehicles. This compact yet powerful motor delivers reliable performance for crawling enthusiasts across the UK who demand consistent torque and smooth power delivery on challenging terrain. Whether you're upgrading an existing FTX Hi-Rock or Geo model, or seeking a replacement component for your RC car, this 17-turn motor strikes the perfect balance between speed and control, making it an ideal choice for both experienced bashers and those new to electric RC cars.
Designed with crawler-specific requirements in mind, the RC550 motor size provides ample power for technical rock crawling while maintaining the controlled responsiveness that makes navigation over obstacles both possible and enjoyable. The 17-turn configuration offers a geared-down power curve perfect for low-speed precision driving, allowing you to pick your line carefully without the motor overspeeding and losing traction. This is why the FTX Outback Hi-Rock 17T RC550 Motor has become a go-to upgrade for RC enthusiasts across the UK who refuse to compromise on performance or reliability.
Built to FTX's exacting standards, this motor integrates seamlessly with existing Hi-Rock and Geo chassis setups, requiring no additional modifications or compatibility concerns. The brushed motor design offers excellent value for money whilst delivering the dependable performance that brushed motors are renowned for in RC circles. Stock or modified, this motor will transform your crawling experience with immediate, predictable power delivery and smooth acceleration characteristics that make technical descents and ascents manageable.
Key Features
- 17-Turn Configuration — The 17-turn design delivers a lower KV rating which means slower, more controllable speeds and greater torque output, allowing you to navigate rock crawling terrain with precision and confidence without the motor overwhelming your vehicle's control systems.
- RC550 Motor Size — This compact 550-size motor is specifically engineered for crawler applications, providing the perfect power-to-size ratio that fits seamlessly into FTX Hi-Rock and Geo chassis without requiring extensive modifications or custom mounting solutions.
- Brushed Motor Technology — Brushed motors are proven workhorses in the RC hobby, offering straightforward reliability, excellent torque characteristics at low speeds, and compatibility with most standard speed controllers found in UK RC shops and home garages.
- 4mm Bullet Connectors — The classic crimp terminal connectors ensure secure, reliable electrical connections to your speed controller, reducing the risk of mid-run disconnections and providing the stable power delivery essential for technical crawling.
- 3.2mm Bore — The precisely machined 3.2mm bore diameter ensures tight tolerances and smooth shaft operation, minimising vibration and maximising efficiency throughout your crawling sessions on challenging UK terrain.
- OEM FTX Component — This is genuine FTX original equipment, meaning it meets the exact specifications required for Hi-Rock and Geo models, guaranteeing perfect fitment and performance compatibility without trial-and-error installation.
Technical Performance
The FTX Outback Hi-Rock 17T RC550 Motor represents the ideal marriage of engineering precision and practical performance for rock crawling applications. The 17-turn brushed configuration produces a lower KV output compared to higher-turn alternatives, which translates to better low-speed control and improved torque delivery—critical factors when navigating boulder fields, technical descents, and tight obstacle courses. The RC550 size provides optimal power density whilst maintaining a compact footprint that integrates perfectly into the FTX Hi-Rock and Geo chassis geometry. The 3.2mm bore shaft connects to industry-standard 4mm bullet connectors via classic crimp terminals, ensuring compatibility with the vast majority of speed controllers available to RC enthusiasts in the UK. The brushed motor design excels in rock crawling scenarios where consistent, predictable power delivery matters more than raw speed; this motor has been engineered specifically for the demands of technical terrain and the control requirements of precision driving. The construction quality reflects FTX's commitment to reliability, with smooth shaft operation and balanced rotor design minimising vibration across the entire RPM range. Users report excellent longevity when paired with appropriate speed controllers and batteries, making this motor an outstanding investment for anyone serious about crawler performance.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Is the FTX 17T RC550 motor suitable for beginners to RC crawling? — Yes, absolutely. The 17-turn configuration produces excellent low-speed torque and manageable power delivery, making it ideal for drivers learning rock crawling techniques. The brushed design is straightforward to install and requires no special ESC programming or tuning, making setup simple for newcomers to the RC hobby in the UK.
- What is the difference between 17-turn and higher-turn motors for crawlers? — Higher-turn motors (such as 21T or 25T) produce even more torque but at the cost of further reduced top speed. The 17T offers an excellent balance—more control than lower-turn alternatives whilst maintaining adequate speed for general crawler use. Most UK crawler enthusiasts find 17T to be the sweet spot for trail work and rock gardens.
- Will this motor fit my FTX Hi-Rock or Geo chassis? — This motor is engineered as an original equipment component for FTX Hi-Rock and Geo models, guaranteeing perfect mechanical and electrical fitment. Simply match the motor connections to your existing speed controller connectors, and you're ready to crawl.
- What battery should I use with this motor? — The 17T RC550 motor works with both LiPo and NiMH batteries. The specific voltage depends on your speed controller's rating, but most crawlers run 2S or 3S LiPo setups (7.4V or 11.1V respectively). Check your ESC documentation for precise battery compatibility.
- How does this compare to brushless motors for crawling? — Brushless motors offer higher efficiency and faster speeds but require more sophisticated ESCs and tuning. Brushed motors like this 17T deliver simpler operation, excellent torque at low speeds, and lower cost, making them preferred by many UK crawler enthusiasts for technical terrain work.
- Is installation difficult? — Installation is straightforward. The motor uses standard 4mm bullet connectors and fits directly into Hi-Rock and Geo motor mounts. No special tools or modifications are required if you're upgrading from another 550-size brushed motor.
