Overview

The FTX Mauler High Torque 540 20T Motor is a purpose-built brushed electric motor designed specifically for rock crawling and off-road RC applications. This 540-size motor delivers impressive torque characteristics that make it ideal for crawlers, scale models, and demanding terrain where low-speed power is essential. Whether you're tackling rocky trails, climbing obstacles, or exploring technical terrain in your RC car UK, this motor provides the grunt needed to conquer challenging conditions without sacrificing control or precision.

Built by FTX, a recognised manufacturer in the RC hobby, this motor is engineered to work seamlessly with their range of ready to run RC vehicles and kits. The 20-turn brushed design is optimised for low-speed, high-torque performance—a critical requirement for rock crawlers and other specialist RC models that prioritise power delivery over raw speed. This makes it an excellent upgrade or replacement component for enthusiasts who demand reliability and consistent performance from their electric RC cars.

If you're building or maintaining an RC crawler, upgrading an existing model, or simply need a replacement motor for your FTX Mauler, this motor represents genuine OEM quality at an affordable price point. It's compatible with several FTX rock crawler platforms, making it a versatile choice for those invested in the FTX ecosystem.

Key Features

  • 540 Motor Size — This standard motor size is widely recognised in the RC hobby and offers an excellent balance between power output, physical dimensions, and compatibility with common RC gearboxes and transmission systems.
  • 20-Turn Brushed Configuration — The 20-turn specification indicates a high-torque, low-speed motor design that prioritises pulling power over top-end velocity, making it perfectly suited for crawling applications where controlled, powerful movement is more important than speed.
  • High Torque Output — As specified in the motor's name, this unit delivers substantial torque across the RPM range, enabling your RC crawler to maintain steady pressure on obstacles, climb gradients, and navigate technical terrain without bogging down or losing traction.
  • Brushed Motor Technology — Brushed motors are known for their simplicity, durability, and forgiving nature with varying power sources and load conditions, making them an excellent choice for rock crawlers and scale models that experience variable torque demands.
  • 3.2mm Bore — The precisely engineered 3.2mm bore diameter ensures proper shaft engagement with your vehicle's gearbox and drivetrain components, guaranteeing secure mounting and reliable power transmission without slippage or wobble.
  • OEM FTX Component — As an official FTX motor, this unit is engineered to factory specifications and integrates perfectly with FTX vehicles like the Mauler 2.0 4x4 Rock Crawler RTR, ensuring compatibility and optimal performance without modification or adaptation.
  • Affordable Performance Upgrade — Priced competitively, this motor offers genuine quality and proven performance, making it an excellent value upgrade for hobbyists who want to improve their crawler's pulling power without expensive alternatives.

Technical Performance

This brushed electric motor is engineered to deliver consistent, predictable performance in demanding RC crawler applications. The 540 size and 20-turn configuration create a motor that excels at producing usable torque across the entire operating range, rather than chasing peak RPM figures that have limited application in rock crawling scenarios. The brushed design employs traditional carbon brushes and a copper commutator, time-proven technology that has served the RC community for decades. The 3.2mm bore diameter is precisely manufactured to ensure perfect fit within FTX's gearbox systems, eliminating play and ensuring efficient power delivery from the motor shaft directly to your vehicle's transmission. Performance characteristics make this motor ideal for 2S and 3S LiPo battery systems commonly used in crawler builds, where voltage stability and torque delivery are more critical than raw speed specifications. The motor's internal windings are wound to the 20-turn specification, creating the optimal balance of copper mass and electromagnetic efficiency for low-speed, high-load operations. In practical use, you can expect smooth, linear throttle response that scales predictably with battery voltage and load conditions—exactly what you need when piloting a scale crawler over rocks, logs, and uneven terrain where smooth power application makes the difference between a successful climb and a stalled attempt.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is the FTX Mauler High Torque 540 20T Motor suitable for beginners? — Yes, absolutely. This motor is an excellent choice for beginners and experienced drivers alike. Its brushed design is forgiving and easy to maintain, and the high-torque characteristics provide predictable, controlled power delivery that's ideal for learning crawler techniques. There's no learning curve associated with brushless systems or complex electronic adjustments—simply install it and drive.
  • What vehicles is this motor compatible with? — This motor is specifically designed for FTX rock crawlers and is confirmed compatible with the FTX Mauler 2.0 4x4 Rock Crawler RTR in both yellow and red variants. It will also fit other FTX models that use the same gearbox and motor mount specifications, though you should verify compatibility with your specific model before purchasing.
  • What battery does this motor need? — As a brushed 540 20-turn motor, this unit is optimised for 2S and 3S LiPo battery systems, which are standard in RC crawler builds. The exact battery capacity will depend on your desired runtime and vehicle weight, but most crawlers use 2000–5000mAh packs in either 2S or 3S configuration. Always check your vehicle's manual for the recommended battery specification.
  • How does this compare to brushless motors? — Brushed motors like this one offer several advantages over brushless systems: they're simpler and more affordable, require no programming, tolerate variable loads without complaint, and are easier to maintain. The trade-off is slightly lower efficiency and a lower top-end speed compared to brushless equivalents. For rock crawling, where low-speed torque matters far more than maximum velocity, brushed motors are the traditional and proven choice.
  • Can I use this motor in other FTX models? — This depends on whether your FTX model uses the same motor mounting system and gearbox specifications. FTX manufactures many models, and whilst some share compatible drivetrains, others do not. Always verify the motor bore diameter (3.2mm) and motor mount dimensions match your vehicle before purchase. Contact our customer service team if you're unsure about compatibility.
  • How often will I need to maintain this motor? — Brushed motors benefit from occasional maintenance, particularly the brushes and commutator. In normal use, you should inspect the brushes every 10–20 hours of driving time. If they become worn (less than 5mm), replacement brush sets are inexpensive and easy to install. The commutator should be cleaned periodically with a dry cloth to maintain good electrical contact. Unlike brushless motors, there are no ESC-level adjustments needed.
  • What power controller (ESC) do I need? — This brushed motor requires a brushed ESC, not a brushless ESC. The exact current rating will depend on your vehicle's weight, gearing, and driving style, but most crawler builds use 60–120A brushed controllers. Check your vehicle's documentation for the recommended ESC specification, or contact us if you need guidance on selecting the right controller.
