Overview

The Fastrax M1 20T Steel Pinion Gear (5mm) MOD1 is a precision-engineered drivetrain component designed for RC enthusiasts who demand reliability and performance from their RC car upgrades. This hardened steel pinion gear is an essential option part for those looking to fine-tune their RC vehicle's performance characteristics, whether you're a competitive racer, a weekend basher, or someone exploring the world of RC motorsports in the UK. The 20-tooth configuration combined with MOD1 specifications makes this pinion gear suitable for a wide range of RC platforms, offering the durability and precision that serious RC hobbyists expect.

Built with quality materials and manufactured to exacting standards by Fastrax, this steel pinion gear represents a popular choice amongst RC car enthusiasts across the UK who understand that drivetrain components play a crucial role in overall vehicle performance. Whether you're upgrading your existing RC setup or building a new custom configuration, the M1 20T pinion gear provides the compatibility and performance characteristics needed to achieve optimal results. This is the kind of specialist component that separates a casual RC car owner from a true hobbyist who invests in quality option parts to elevate their RC experience.

Key Features

  • MOD1 Specification — The MOD1 designation indicates the gear module, which is a standardised measurement that ensures perfect meshing with compatible spur gears and driveshafts. This precise specification is critical for smooth power delivery and longevity of your RC drivetrain components.
  • 20-Tooth Configuration — The 20-tooth count is a popular middle-ground setting that balances acceleration and top speed characteristics, making it suitable for a variety of RC driving styles and terrain conditions.
  • Hardened Steel Construction — Steel pinion gears offer superior durability compared to softer materials, providing excellent resistance to wear, stripping, and breakage even under high-load conditions typical in competitive RC racing.
  • 5mm Bore Diameter — The 5mm bore size fits standard motor shafts used in many popular RC platforms, ensuring straightforward installation and compatibility with your existing RC vehicle setup.
  • Precision Manufacturing — Fastrax pinion gears are manufactured to tight tolerances, ensuring consistent meshing characteristics and predictable performance across multiple use sessions.

Technical Performance

The Fastrax M1 20T Steel Pinion Gear represents a significant upgrade for RC enthusiasts looking to enhance drivetrain performance and reliability. With its hardened steel construction, this component is engineered to withstand the stresses of competitive RC racing, high-speed running, and aggressive driving styles. The MOD1 specification ensures compatibility with a comprehensive range of spur gears and drivetrain assemblies used across multiple RC platforms. At 20 teeth, this pinion gear provides a balanced approach to power transmission, offering sufficient acceleration whilst maintaining reasonable top-end speed characteristics. The 5mm bore diameter is the industry standard for many brushless and brushed RC motors, making this an accessible upgrade for UK RC car owners operating vehicles across various scales and configurations. The precision-engineered design minimises noise and vibration during operation, contributing to a smoother, more refined driving experience. For competitive racers and dedicated hobbyists who run multiple vehicles or frequently swap components, having quality steel pinion gears in your parts collection is essential for maintaining peak performance and reducing downtime due to drivetrain failures.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is a pinion gear and why do I need it for my RC car? — A pinion gear is a small gear mounted directly on the motor shaft that meshes with the spur gear to transfer power from the motor to the wheels. The pinion gear directly affects your RC vehicle's acceleration, top speed, and overall performance characteristics. By changing the tooth count, you can tune your RC car for different racing conditions or driving styles without upgrading the motor itself.
  • Is the Fastrax M1 20T pinion gear compatible with my RC vehicle? — This MOD1 20-tooth pinion with a 5mm bore is compatible with many popular RC platforms including Traxxas, Team Associated, Losi, and other brands that utilise standard MOD1 gearboxes and 5mm motor shafts. We recommend checking your vehicle's specifications or consulting the manual to confirm compatibility before ordering. If you're unsure, our knowledgeable team at RC Model Shop is happy to help you identify the correct component.
  • What is the difference between MOD1 and other gear module specifications? — MOD1 (module 1) is a standard gear specification that defines the size and pitch of the gear teeth. MOD1 gears will only mesh correctly with other MOD1 gears; mixing modules will result in poor meshing, noise, and potential damage. Always ensure all your drivetrain components use the same module specification.
  • Why choose steel instead of brass or aluminium pinion gears? — Steel pinion gears offer superior durability and wear resistance compared to softer materials. They maintain their tooth profile longer under high-load conditions, experience less stripping, and provide more consistent performance throughout their lifespan. For competitive RC racing and serious hobbyists, steel is the preferred choice despite being slightly heavier than alternative materials.
  • How often should I replace my pinion gear? — The lifespan of a pinion gear depends on your driving intensity, vehicle setup, and maintenance practices. Regular inspection for tooth wear and damage is recommended. If you notice grinding noises, loss of power delivery, or visible tooth damage, replacement is advisable to prevent further drivetrain damage.
