Overview
The Fastrax Platinum Glow Plugs No. 4 Medium Hot are essential components for anyone running nitro-powered RC cars and trucks in the UK. Whether you're a seasoned nitro enthusiast or just getting started with your first ready to run RC vehicle, these glow plugs deliver reliable ignition and consistent performance across a wide range of engine sizes. The No. 4 medium hot rating makes these plugs ideal for most standard, factory-fitted RTR engines, providing the perfect balance between easy starting and stable running characteristics that RC hobbyists depend on.
Glow plugs are the ignition system of nitro RC engines, and choosing the right one can make the difference between frustrating start attempts and reliable, first-time firing. The Fastrax Platinum range has earned a strong reputation among UK RC car enthusiasts for delivering excellent value without compromising on quality or durability. These plugs feature platinum-enhanced elements that provide superior heat retention and longevity compared to standard alternatives, meaning you'll get more tanks of fuel from each plug and spend less time troubleshooting ignition problems during your RC sessions.
Available in a warm temperature rating, these glow plugs are specifically engineered to work with .12 to .28 size nitro engines, covering everything from small-scale buggies to larger truggy and truck platforms. If you're building or maintaining a nitro RC setup, stocking spare Fastrax Platinum plugs is a smart investment that ensures you're never caught without a working ignition component when you head to the track or bash spot.
Key Features
- Platinum-Enhanced Element — The platinum content in these glow plugs provides superior durability and heat retention compared to standard copper or nickel alternatives, which means the plug maintains optimal operating temperature throughout your fuel tank and resists fouling during engine break-in periods.
- Medium Hot Temperature Rating — The No. 4 designation indicates a medium hot plug, making it the ideal choice for most standard factory-fitted RTR nitro engines, providing easy cold starts while maintaining stable running characteristics during extended driving sessions.
- Wide Engine Compatibility — These plugs are suitable for .12 to .28 size nitro engines, covering a broad spectrum of RC vehicles from small buggies through to larger trucks and truggies, making them a versatile choice for multi-vehicle RC enthusiasts.
- Standard Head Fitting — The standard head fitting ensures universal compatibility with the vast majority of nitro RC engines on the market, meaning you can confidently use these plugs across different brands and models without adapter requirements.
- Proven Reliability — Fastrax Platinum plugs have earned consistently positive feedback from the UK RC community for starting reliability, longevity across multiple fuel tanks, and overall value for money.
- Fast Heating Characteristics — The platinum element composition enables rapid heat-up when the glow driver is connected, resulting in quicker engine starts and reducing the waiting time before you can begin driving your RC car.
Technical Performance
The Fastrax Platinum Glow Plug No. 4 represents a well-engineered balance between performance and affordability in the world of nitro RC ignition systems. The platinum-enhanced element design is the key to understanding why these plugs outperform cheaper alternatives — platinum conducts heat more efficiently than standard materials and resists the oxidation and fouling that occurs during engine operation. This means the glow plug maintains consistent temperature throughout your fuel tank, preventing the mid-run performance drops that can occur with degraded plugs. The medium hot temperature rating (No. 4) is calibrated to work optimally with standard RTR nitro engines, which are typically tuned to run at moderate needle valve settings without requiring the extreme temperatures needed for racing competition engines. The standard head fitting ensures the plug threads securely into the cylinder head without modification, and the robust construction means it can withstand the thermal cycling of repeated starting and stopping. Users consistently report that these plugs deliver reliable first-time starts even in cooler UK weather conditions, and the durability is exceptional — many RC enthusiasts report getting 5 to 7 litres or more of fuel through a single plug before replacement becomes necessary, which represents outstanding value when you factor in the purchase price.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Is the Fastrax Platinum Glow Plug No. 4 suitable for beginners to nitro RC? — Yes, absolutely. The medium hot temperature rating makes this plug one of the most forgiving options for RTR engines, offering easy starting characteristics that don't require extensive tuning knowledge. Many beginners report first-time starts with these plugs even when using them with factory-standard engines, and the excellent durability means you won't need to replace plugs frequently whilst learning the hobby.
- What size engines does this glow plug work with? — The Fastrax Platinum No. 4 is rated for .12 to .28 size nitro engines, which covers the vast majority of standard RTR RC buggies, trucks, and truggies available in the UK market. This size range encompasses single-cylinder four-stroke engines and two-stroke designs, making it a versatile choice for multi-vehicle collections.
- Why is platinum content important in a glow plug? — Platinum is a noble metal that resists oxidation and maintains consistent heat output over extended use, unlike cheaper materials that degrade and foul during engine operation. This translates to more reliable starts, cleaner burning, and longer plug life — you'll get more tanks of fuel from each plug before needing replacement, which delivers better value despite the slightly higher initial cost.
- How do I know if I need to replace my glow plug? — Signs that your glow plug needs replacement include difficulty starting the engine, requiring extended glow time to ignite, inconsistent running, or fouling (black crusty deposits on the plug element). The Fastrax Platinum plugs typically remain serviceable for 5-7 litres of fuel, though this can vary depending on running conditions and engine tuning.
- Will this plug work in my specific RC engine brand? — The standard head fitting means these plugs are compatible with the vast majority of nitro engines from manufacturers including Traxxas, HPI, Team Associated, Tamiya, Mugen, Team Losi, Axial, and most other brands. The medium hot rating works across these diverse platforms because RTR engines are designed with broad compatibility in mind.
- What is the difference between glow plug heat ratings? — Glow plugs come in cold (used for high-compression racing engines), medium (for standard RTR engines), and hot (for older or heavily worn engines) ratings. The No. 4 medium hot plug is calibrated for stock RTR engines, whilst racing engines might require cooler plugs. Using the correct heat rating ensures optimal starting and running performance.
