Overview
The CORALLY M1.0 PINION SHORT HARDENED STEEL 13 TEETH SHAFT DIA. 5mm MOD1 (C-72713) is a precision-engineered pinion gear designed for serious RC enthusiasts and competitive racers in the UK who demand absolute reliability and performance from their 1/8 scale RC cars. This is not a generic component — it is a high-performance gear manufactured by Team Corally, a brand recognised for exceptional quality in the RC hobby. Whether you are competing at your local track, bashing with friends, or simply maintaining your ready-to-run RC car UK collection, this pinion gear delivers the concentricity and durability needed for smooth, vibration-free operation across countless hours of driving.
Pinion gears are one of the most critical components in any RC drivetrain, directly affecting acceleration, top speed, and overall performance. The wrong gear ratio can leave your RC car UK sluggish off the line or unable to reach its full potential on the straights. This 13-tooth pinion is part of a complete system that allows you to dial in the perfect gear ratio for your specific track conditions and driving style. By selecting from Corally's comprehensive range of pinion sizes, you can optimise performance whether you are running a tight technical course or a high-speed open track.
What sets this pinion apart from budget alternatives is the manufacturing process and materials. Every tooth is CNC cut on specialised gear machines to guarantee perfect tooth shaping and ultra-true running, which means zero unwanted vibration transferring through your drivetrain. The hardened steel construction ensures this gear will withstand thousands of gear meshes, high-torque launches, and the inevitable contact with spur gears run after run without stripping or wearing prematurely. For anyone serious about RC performance, this is the pinion gear you need.
Key Features
- Special Hardened Steel Construction — The pinion is manufactured from hardened steel specifically selected for its toughness and durability, meaning it will outlast softer alloy alternatives and maintain its tooth profile even under extreme load and repeated meshing with spur gears.
- CNC Cut Teeth with Perfect Concentricity — Every tooth is machined on precision CNC equipment to ensure perfect tooth shape and ultra-precise concentricity, which eliminates runout and delivers vibration-free operation that improves overall RC car handling and reduces drivetrain wear.
- 13-Tooth Configuration — The 13-tooth count is a standard ratio for 1/8 scale RC cars running MOD1 gears, offering a balanced setup that works across a wide variety of track layouts and provides smooth acceleration without sacrificing top speed potential.
- Module 1.0 (MOD1) Specification — This pinion is manufactured to MOD1 specifications, which means it is compatible with all MOD1 spur gears used in 1/8 scale RC buggies and trucks, making it a universal upgrade for your existing setup.
- 5.0mm Motor Shaft Compatibility — The 5mm shaft diameter is the industry standard for brushless and brushed motors in 1/8 scale RC cars, ensuring perfect fit and alignment with your existing motor without the need for adapters or modifications.
- Ultra-Precise Tooth Shaping — Each tooth is shaped with extreme precision to ensure smooth engagement with your spur gear, reducing shock loading and mechanical stress that can cause premature failure and poor power delivery.
- Easy Identification Marking — Each pinion is clearly marked with the tooth number, allowing you to quickly and accurately identify the correct gear ratio during setup, maintenance, and spares management across multiple RC cars.
- Made in Europe — Team Corally pinions are manufactured in Europe to exacting quality standards, meaning you are investing in a product backed by decades of engineering expertise and rigorous quality control rather than relying on mass-produced alternatives.
Technical Performance
This pinion gear represents the culmination of precision engineering applied to RC drivetrain components. The CNC machining process creates teeth that are perfectly uniform in shape and spacing, which means there is zero variation in how each tooth engages with your spur gear. This consistency delivers smooth power transmission and eliminates the micro-vibrations that can accumulate and eventually damage drivetrain components or affect handling response. The hardened steel material is heat-treated to achieve the perfect balance between hardness (which resists wear) and toughness (which prevents brittle fracture), meaning this gear can handle the shock loads generated by aggressive acceleration, landings from jumps, and high-speed cornering without stripping teeth or developing fatigue cracks. The 13-tooth configuration provides a gear ratio that works effectively across most track layouts used in 1/8 scale racing, offering adequate acceleration for tight technical sections whilst maintaining reasonable top speed on open portions of the course. The 6.2mm tooth width ensures sufficient contact area between the pinion and spur gear for load distribution, reducing stress concentration and extending service life. The short profile design (13mm total length) keeps the overall drivetrain compact and lightweight, improving weight distribution and handling. At 2.0mm hex key size, removal and installation is straightforward without requiring specialist tools or engineering knowledge. This is a component engineered for performance, reliability, and ease of maintenance.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Is this pinion gear suitable for beginners starting their first RC car UK? — Whilst this is a high-quality component, absolute beginners are advised to first purchase a ready-to-run RC car that includes a complete drivetrain. Once you have developed basic driving skills and understanding of RC mechanics, upgrading to premium components like this Corally pinion will significantly improve your car's performance and reliability. This gear is ideal for hobbyists transitioning from stock setups to tuned setups.
- What vehicles is this pinion compatible with? — This pinion is compatible with any 1/8 scale RC car that uses MOD1 gears and has a 5mm motor shaft. This includes most 1/8 scale buggies, truggy trucks, and short course trucks from manufacturers like Team Corally, HPI, Losi, and similar brands. You should verify your vehicle's specifications before purchasing to confirm MOD1 compatibility.
- How do I know what tooth count I need? — The tooth count determines your overall gear ratio, which affects acceleration and top speed. A lower tooth count (fewer teeth) provides faster acceleration and lower top speed, whilst a higher tooth count provides better top speed but slower acceleration. Team Corally offers this pinion in multiple tooth counts, allowing you to optimise your gear ratio for your specific track layout. Most racers experiment with two or three different pinion sizes to find the perfect balance for their track.
- Why is hardened steel better than aluminium alloy? — Hardened steel resists wear far better than aluminium, meaning the teeth maintain their precise shape through thousands of meshes with your spur gear. This consistency ensures reliable power transmission and prevents the gradual tooth degradation that causes efficiency loss and eventual stripping. Hardened steel also resists stripping better when subjected to shock loads from aggressive driving or landings.
- How often should I replace this pinion? — With proper maintenance and regular cleaning, a quality hardened steel pinion like this one should last through many competitive seasons or hundreds of recreational driving hours. Replacement is only necessary if teeth become visibly worn, chipped, or stripped. Regular inspection during maintenance will tell you when replacement is needed.
- What tools do I need to install this? — Installation requires a 2.0mm hex key (also called an Allen key) to secure the pinion onto your motor shaft, a small wire brush or cloth to clean the shaft, and optionally a small amount of thread-locking compound to secure the grub screw. The installation process takes less than five minutes and requires no specialist knowledge.
