Overview
The ARRMA Steel Pinion Gear 13T Mod1 5mm is a premium replacement transmission component designed for ARRMA's range of high-performance brushless RC vehicles. Whether you're running a 1/8 scale speed truck, buggy, or stunt truck, this steel pinion gear delivers the durability and precision engineering that serious RC enthusiasts demand. This is an essential upgrade or replacement part for anyone operating ARRMA brushless RC cars UK-wide, particularly if you're pushing your vehicle to its limits in extreme conditions.
Built from high-quality steel rather than softer materials, this 13-tooth pinion gear is engineered to withstand the tremendous forces generated by modern brushless motors in 1/7 and 1/8 scale RC buggies, trucks, and speed platforms. The 5mm bore diameter makes it compatible with standard motor shafts used across ARRMA's current brushless lineup, including the Kraton, Talion, Typhon, Outcast, Notorious, and Mojave models. This pinion gear is not simply a wear part—it's a critical component that directly affects your vehicle's acceleration, efficiency, and longevity.
For RC hobbyists in the UK seeking reliable transmission upgrades that will handle repeated high-speed runs, wheelies, and aggressive bashing, the ARRMA Steel Pinion Gear 13T represents excellent value and proven performance. It comes complete with all fasteners needed for installation, meaning you can get back on the track quickly without hunting for additional hardware.
Key Features
- Strong and durable steel construction — Unlike plastic or softer alloy alternatives, this pinion gear is manufactured from premium steel that resists tooth stripping, deformation, and wear even under extreme RC racing conditions, ensuring long-lasting performance and reliability.
- Precision manufactured tooth profile — The teeth are engineered with exact modulus specifications to mesh perfectly with spur gears, delivering smooth power transfer, reducing noise, minimising backlash, and improving overall drivetrain efficiency across acceleration and top speed runs.
- Double set screw holes for secure fitment — This innovative design feature includes precision-manufactured holes on both sides of the motor shaft interface, allowing you to install set screws on either side of the shaft for extraordinarily secure retention and preventing slippage during intense driving sessions.
- Compatible with 5mm motor shafts — The bore diameter is precisely manufactured to fit standard 5mm motor shafts used in ARRMA brushless platforms, ensuring a perfect fit without gaps, wobbling, or installation complications.
- 13-tooth Mod1 specification — The 13-tooth count with Mod1 pitch provides the optimal balance between acceleration and top speed for street bashing and racing applications, making this the perfect choice if you're seeking a gearing upgrade from stock setups.
- Direct replacement compatibility — This pinion gear is engineered as a direct replacement for stock ARRMA pinion gears, meaning installation is straightforward and requires no modifications to your vehicle's drivetrain.
Technical Performance
This steel pinion gear represents the evolution of ARRMA's transmission engineering, specifically designed to handle the immense torque and rotational speeds produced by modern brushless motors in 1/8 and 1/7 scale RC buggies, trucks, and speed vehicles. The Mod1 tooth pitch profile is the industry standard for precision RC transmissions, ensuring compatibility with ARRMA's spur gears and delivering efficient power delivery without excessive noise or vibration. With 13 teeth, this pinion provides an aggressive acceleration profile that makes it ideal for racing applications and weekend bashing where quick throttle response is essential. The precision manufacturing process ensures that each tooth is cut to exact tolerances, creating a smooth engagement with your spur gear that minimises wear on both components and maximises drivetrain longevity. Steel construction is absolutely critical in high-performance RC applications: whilst cheaper plastic gears may function initially, they're prone to catastrophic failure under load, resulting in stripped teeth and costly downtime. The ARRMA steel pinion gear resists this failure mode entirely, making it the responsible choice for anyone serious about their RC hobby. The 5mm bore is the standard size for ARRMA's brushless motor line, and the double set screw holes provide unprecedented security against shaft slippage—a problem that plagues lesser-quality pinion gears and results in binding, overheating, and drivetrain damage. Whether you're running a Kraton, Talion, Typhon, Outcast, Notorious, or Mojave platform, this pinion gear will deliver the performance you've come to expect from ARRMA's engineering.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What is the difference between a 13T and 15T pinion gear for my ARRMA RC truck? — Tooth count directly affects your gearing ratio. A 13T pinion (like this model) delivers more aggressive acceleration and quicker throttle response, making it ideal for racing and competitive driving. A 15T pinion offers slightly higher top speed but with reduced low-end punch. Choose 13T if you want maximum acceleration; choose 15T if you prioritise top speed. Most ARRMA users run 13T or 14T as a middle ground for all-around performance.
- Why should I upgrade to a steel pinion gear instead of using the stock plastic gear? — Stock ARRMA pinion gears are adequate for casual driving, but steel pinions are dramatically more durable, particularly if you run high-KV brushless motors, use 6S LiPo batteries, or engage in aggressive bashing. Steel resists tooth stripping, maintains tooth profile integrity longer, and won't deform under sustained high-torque loads. For any serious RC enthusiast, steel is the only sensible choice.
- Will this pinion gear fit my ARRMA model? — This pinion is compatible with ARRMA models featuring a 5mm motor shaft, including all Kraton, Talion, Typhon, Outcast, Notorious, and Mojave variants listed above. Check your vehicle's motor specifications before purchasing. If your model uses a different bore diameter or gear pitch, this pinion will not fit.
- How do I install the set screws on this pinion gear? — The pinion includes two M4x4mm set screws and features double set screw holes on either side of the bore. Slide the pinion onto your motor shaft, then insert one set screw through each hole, tightening them firmly to lock the pinion in place. Using both set screws is essential—they prevent the pinion from slipping during acceleration and deceleration.
- What is Mod1 gear pitch and why does it matter? — Modulus (Mod) is a standardised measurement that determines tooth size and spacing. Mod1 is the industry standard for precision RC transmissions and ensures that your pinion meshes perfectly with ARRMA's spur gears. Using a non-Mod1 pinion will result in poor meshing, excessive noise, increased wear, and potential drivetrain damage.
- How often should I replace my pinion gear? — With proper maintenance and reasonable driving, a quality steel pinion like this one will last for hundreds of run hours. However, if you notice stripped or damaged teeth, grinding noises from the drivetrain, or loss of acceleration efficiency, it's time to replace it. Inspect your pinion regularly if you drive aggressively or run high-power battery configurations.
- Is this suitable for beginners? — Yes, this is an excellent beginner-friendly upgrade. If you're new to ARRMA RC vehicles and want your truck or buggy to be more reliable and durable, upgrading to a steel pinion gear is one of the smartest decisions you can make. It's easy to install with the included set screws and will dramatically improve your vehicle's longevity.
