Overview

The Corally 32 DP Pinion Short Hardened Steel 18 Teeth Shaft Dia. 5mm (C-72518) is an essential upgrade component for serious RC enthusiasts building or maintaining high-performance electric RC cars and trucks. This precision-engineered pinion gear represents the gold standard in drivetrain components, offering the durability and reliability demanded by competitive racers and dedicated hobbyists across the UK RC scene. Whether you're fine-tuning your RC buggy, truggy, or monster truck for maximum performance, or replacing a worn gear in your existing setup, this hardened steel pinion delivers the performance characteristics that separate winning builds from the rest.

As a specialist RC hobby retailer, we understand that pinion gear selection is critical to your RC car's overall performance. The 18-tooth configuration offers an excellent balance between acceleration and top-end speed, making it suitable for a wide variety of track conditions and driving styles. This particular gear is part of Corally's comprehensive 32 DP pinion range, which includes tooth counts from 11 through to 27 teeth, allowing you to precisely dial in your gear ratio for your specific driving conditions and vehicle setup. The short-length design ensures compatibility with modern RC vehicle architectures whilst maintaining the structural integrity required for reliable, long-term performance.

Corally has earned its reputation as a manufacturer of quality RC components through decades of commitment to engineering excellence and material science. The hardened steel construction of this 18-tooth pinion ensures superior wear resistance compared to standard steel alternatives, translating directly into extended component lifespan and reduced maintenance intervals. For RC enthusiasts in the UK seeking authentic, high-quality replacement parts or upgrade components, the Corally 32 DP Pinion Short Hardened Steel 18 Teeth represents exceptional value and proven performance reliability.

Key Features

  • Hardened Steel Construction — The pinion gear is manufactured from hardened steel, which significantly increases its resistance to wear, deformation, and tooth stripping compared to standard steel alternatives. This superior material specification means your drivetrain will maintain consistent performance through extended use and demanding driving conditions, ultimately saving you money by reducing the frequency of replacement and repairs.
  • 32 DP Gear Pitch — The 32 diametral pitch (32 DP) specification ensures this pinion integrates seamlessly with 32 DP spur gears, a standard specification across the majority of modern 1/10 and smaller-scale electric RC vehicles. This compatibility makes it an ideal upgrade or replacement component for your existing RC car, truck, or buggy without requiring complete drivetrain redesign.
  • 18-Tooth Configuration — The 18-tooth count provides an optimal balance between acceleration response and achievable top-end speed, making it versatile across various track conditions and driving styles. This tooth count is ideal for drivers seeking moderate gearing that works well on both tight technical tracks and more open layouts without requiring extreme low-end or high-end specialisation.
  • 5mm Shaft Diameter — The 5mm shaft diameter is the industry-standard specification for modern electric RC vehicles, ensuring this pinion will fit directly onto the majority of brushless and brushed motor shafts used in contemporary RC cars, trucks and buggies without modification or adapters.
  • Short-Length Profile — The short-length design is engineered to work with modern RC vehicle chassis and motor mount configurations, ensuring proper mesh alignment with your spur gear without interference or clearance issues that can arise with oversized components.
  • OEM Quality and Specification — As a Corally original equipment component, this pinion meets the exact specifications and quality standards required for use in factory-built Corally vehicles, meaning you're benefiting from the same engineering precision and material science that goes into complete vehicle kits.

Technical Performance

This hardened steel pinion gear represents the culmination of precision manufacturing and material engineering focused specifically on maximising drivetrain reliability and performance longevity in high-performance electric RC vehicles. The 32 DP pitch specification ensures smooth, efficient power transmission with minimal backlash when properly meshed with matching 32 DP spur gears. The hardening process applied to the steel construction creates a surface layer of exceptional hardness that resists the microscopic deformation and tooth wear that gradually degrades standard steel gears under repetitive load cycles. This technical advantage becomes increasingly valuable during intensive driving sessions, competition racing, and extended bashing sessions where standard gears might begin showing signs of wear. The 18-tooth configuration delivers a gear ratio that suits a broad spectrum of driving scenarios—providing responsive acceleration suitable for technical tracks whilst maintaining sufficient top-end potential for more open layouts. The 5mm shaft diameter integrates directly with the vast majority of modern brushless motor designs, including those from manufacturers like Hobbywing and Spektrum, making this an accessible upgrade path for builders and maintenance-focused hobbyists. The compact short-length profile ensures this pinion integrates cleanly with contemporary motor mount designs without requiring spacers or modifications, maintaining proper spur gear mesh alignment and gear tooth contact pressure for maximum efficiency and durability.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is a pinion gear and why do I need it for my RC car? — A pinion gear is a small gear mounted directly onto your RC vehicle's motor shaft that meshes with the larger spur gear in your transmission to transfer power from the motor to the wheels. The pinion gear determines your overall gear ratio—choosing the right tooth count allows you to dial in whether your RC car prioritises acceleration or top-end speed. As a wearing component subject to repetitive load cycles during driving, pinion gears eventually require replacement as they wear, making quality replacement gears like this Corally component essential for maintaining performance.
  • What does 32 DP mean and is this compatible with my RC car? — DP stands for diametral pitch and measures the size and spacing of gear teeth. 32 DP is the most common specification across modern 1/10-scale electric RC vehicles and represents a standard that the vast majority of contemporary RC cars, buggies, trucks and truggy platforms use. To confirm compatibility, check your vehicle's documentation or examine your existing spur gear—if it's marked 32 DP, this pinion will mesh correctly with it.
  • Why is hardened steel better than standard steel for pinion gears? — Hardened steel undergoes a heat-treatment process that creates a very hard outer surface layer whilst maintaining toughness in the core material. This combination means hardened steel pinions resist tooth wear and deformation far better than standard steel during extended use, maintaining consistent performance and requiring replacement less frequently. For racers and serious hobbyists putting significant mileage on their RC vehicles, the durability of hardened steel represents excellent value over the longer term.
  • How do I know which tooth count pinion I need? — The tooth count of your pinion gear directly affects your vehicle's gear ratio and performance characteristics. Lower tooth counts (11-14 teeth) provide more acceleration and lower top speed—ideal for tight technical tracks. Mid-range counts like this 18-tooth option offer balanced performance. Higher tooth counts (20-27 teeth) prioritise top-end speed at the expense of acceleration. Your choice depends on your track layout, driving style, and power system. Many RC enthusiasts keep multiple pinion gears on hand to quickly adjust gearing between different track configurations.
  • Is this pinion gear suitable for both brushless and brushed motors? — Yes, this 32 DP pinion is compatible with the vast majority of modern RC motors, both brushless and brushed designs, provided they feature a 5mm shaft diameter—the industry standard. Check your motor specification to confirm the shaft diameter before purchasing.
  • What is the difference between short-length and standard-length pinion gears? — Short-length pinions have a narrower face width and are engineered to work with modern motor mounts and spur gear configurations. Standard-length pinions have a wider face width and are typically used in older vehicle designs. Using the correct length for your vehicle ensures proper gear mesh alignment and prevents premature wear.
