Overview

The Corally 48 DP Pinion Short Hardened Steel 18 Teeth 5MM (C-72418) is a high-performance replacement pinion gear engineered for serious RC enthusiasts who demand precision, durability and reliability in their RC cars and trucks. This professional-grade component is manufactured by Team Corally, a recognised leader in RC performance parts, and is designed specifically for 5mm motor shafts using the 48 DP (diametral pitch) standard. Whether you're running a brushless RC monster truck, RC buggy, or any other electric RC vehicle on UK tracks, having the right gearing is essential to maximising your performance and protecting your drivetrain from damage.

The C-72418 pinion gear represents the very best in European engineering and manufacturing precision. Every gear tooth is CNC cut with ultra-precise tolerances to ensure perfect tooth shape and concentricity, resulting in vibration-free operation even at high speeds. This level of manufacturing quality is what separates premium RC components from budget alternatives, and it's why experienced RC racers and bashers across the UK trust Corally gearing for competition and recreational use alike. The 18-tooth configuration offers excellent acceleration and torque delivery, making it ideal for high-grip tracks, carpet surfaces, and applications where controlled power delivery matters more than outright top speed.

Available in hardened steel for maximum durability and longevity, this pinion is marked with the tooth number for easy and quick identification, so you'll always know exactly what gear ratio you're running. The short version design fits a wide range of RC cars and trucks, and with Corally's full range of 48 DP pinion sizes available, you can dial in the perfect gear ratio for any track condition, weather, and driving style. Stock your RC workshop with quality components like this C-72418, and you'll enjoy faster acceleration, smoother power delivery, and better reliability during every track session.

Key Features

  • Hardened Steel Construction — This pinion is manufactured from special hardened steel which provides exceptional toughness and durability compared to standard steel or plastic alternatives, meaning your gear will withstand the stresses of high-powered brushless motors without stripping, cracking or premature wear.
  • CNC Cut Teeth with Perfect Concentricity — Every tooth is precision-cut on a special gear machine with ultra-precise tooth shaping, ensuring perfect concentricity and true running for vibration-free operation across all RPM ranges, which directly translates to smoother acceleration, less driveline noise, and longer component lifespan.
  • 48 DP Module Standard — This gear uses the industry-standard 48 DP pitch specification, making it compatible with a huge range of RC cars, trucks, and aftermarket spur gears, giving you maximum flexibility when dialling in your gear ratios for different track conditions.
  • 18 Tooth Configuration — The 18-tooth setup provides aggressive acceleration and strong low-end torque delivery, making this an excellent choice for high-grip surfaces, carpet tracks, and situations where rapid acceleration is more important than achieving maximum top speed.
  • 5MM Motor Shaft Compatibility — Specifically designed for 5mm motor shafts, the standard size used on the vast majority of 1/10 and 1/8 scale RC cars and trucks available on the UK market, ensuring hassle-free installation on most brushless and brushed motor setups.
  • Short Version Design — The compact short version configuration minimises unsprung weight, reduces rotating inertia, and fits into tight spaces on modern RC chassis designs, improving overall handling response and reducing gyroscopic effects during cornering.
  • Tooth Number Marking — Each pinion is clearly marked with its tooth count, enabling you to instantly identify which gear ratio you're running without having to count teeth or refer to packaging, which is invaluable when you're switching between multiple setups or troubleshooting drivetrain issues.
  • Made in Europe — Manufactured in Europe to the highest standards, you can be confident that this component meets strict quality control protocols and represents genuine Team Corally engineering rather than low-cost imitations.
  • European Engineering Excellence — Team Corally is renowned across the global RC hobby for precision manufacturing and performance innovation, so choosing this C-72418 pinion means you're investing in a component from a brand trusted by competitive RC racers and serious hobbyists worldwide.

Technical Performance

This pinion gear represents a significant step up in quality and performance compared to standard replacement gears you might find at budget retailers. The hardened steel material is specifically chosen to resist the intense stresses generated by modern brushless motors, which can deliver tremendous torque and rotational force. With precise CNC manufacturing and ultra-tight tolerances, the C-72418 delivers vibration-free operation across the entire RPM range, from low-speed crawling through to maximum velocity sprints. The 18-tooth count, combined with 48 DP pitch, creates an aggressive gear ratio that emphasises acceleration and torque over top speed—perfect for high-grip carpet tracks, tight technical courses, and any situation where quick off-the-line performance matters more than flat-out speed. The short version design minimises weight and rotating mass, improving throttle response and reducing the gyroscopic effect that can affect handling in quick direction changes. Every detail of this gear—from the perfect concentricity ensured by CNC cutting to the marked tooth count for quick identification—demonstrates Team Corally's commitment to performance engineering. Whether you're replacing a worn pinion, experimenting with different gear ratios, or upgrading from lower-quality components, this C-72418 will deliver noticeable improvements in drivetrain smoothness, reliability, and overall performance characteristics. The 2.0mm hex key size for installation ensures compatibility with standard RC tools, and the 6.20mm teeth width and 13mm gear length make this a genuine drop-in replacement on most 48 DP equipped RC vehicles currently in use across the UK.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is the difference between 48 DP and other gear pitch standards for RC cars? — Diametral pitch (DP) determines the size and spacing of gear teeth; 48 DP is one of the most common standards in 1/10 and 1/8 scale RC, offering a good balance between strength, efficiency and availability. Lower DP numbers (like 32 DP) have larger teeth and are stronger but less precise, whilst higher DP numbers offer finer tooth profiles. The 48 DP standard used here is ideal for modern brushless RC cars and ensures compatibility with most aftermarket spur gears available in the UK.
  • Will this pinion work with my RC car? — This 48 DP pinion with 5mm shaft will fit any RC car or truck that uses a 48 DP drivetrain with a 5mm motor shaft, which covers the vast majority of 1/10 and 1/8 scale electric vehicles. However, you must already have (or separately upgrade to) a compatible 48 DP spur gear; this pinion will not work with stock gearing on vehicles not equipped for 48 DP. Check your vehicle's specifications or contact us if you're unsure about compatibility.
  • What is the advantage of hardened steel pinions over plastic or standard steel? — Hardened steel provides exceptional durability and resists stripping, cracking and wear far better than plastic or standard steel alternatives. Modern brushless motors generate tremendous torque, and hardened steel pinions can withstand this punishment reliably over many hours of use, making them the choice of competitive RC racers and serious bashers across the UK who demand reliability and longevity from their components.
  • Is 18 teeth the right pinion size for my RC vehicle? — The 18-tooth configuration is aggressive, emphasising acceleration and torque delivery over top speed, making it excellent for high-grip tracks, carpet surfaces, and technical courses where rapid acceleration is valued. If you prefer higher top speed over acceleration, you might consider a larger tooth count like 19T or 20T. With Corally's full range of 48 DP pinions available, you can experiment with different ratios to find the perfect setup for your specific track and driving style.
  • How do I install this pinion on my RC motor? — Simply slide the pinion onto your 5mm motor shaft until it reaches the desired meshing depth with your spur gear, then secure it using the grub screw with a 2.0mm hex key. Proper mesh clearance is critical; you want just enough space to slide a thin piece of paper between the teeth. If you're unsure about installation, most UK RC retailers and hobby shops can assist with fitting, or detailed instructions are available in Corally's documentation.
  • Can I use this pinion with a brushed motor or only brushless? — This pinion is suitable for both brushed and brushless motors as long as they feature a 5mm shaft. The hardened steel construction makes it particularly valuable with brushless motors, which generate higher torque and can stress weaker gears, but it will work equally well with brushed setups and offers the same precision and durability benefits.
  • What is meant by 'short version' and why does it matter? — The short version design has a compact profile (13mm length) compared to standard or long pinion versions, which minimises unsprung weight and rotating inertia on your RC vehicle. This results in faster throttle response, better handling characteristics, and reduced gyroscopic effects during cornering, contributing to overall improved performance and driveability.
  • Is the tooth number marking just for identification, or does it affect performance? — The marking is purely for identification purposes, allowing you to quickly and accurately determine your gear ratio without counting teeth or checking packaging. This is invaluable when managing multiple vehicles or experimenting with different setups, as you'll always know exactly what ratio you're running at a glance.
