Overview
The Team Associated 16mm Front Springs in black are engineered for competitive 1:8 scale RC racing and serious bashers who demand precision suspension tuning. These front springs represent a significant advancement in suspension technology, developed directly from Team Associated's championship-winning RC8B4.1 platform. Whether you're racing at the Desert Nationals Challenge (DNC), Silver State events, or tackling ungroomed local tracks across the UK, these springs deliver the consistent grip and bump handling that separates winners from the rest. The 1.5D (1.50mm wire diameter) construction marks a departure from traditional 1.6mm springs, offering a fundamentally different approach to how your RC car handles variable terrain.
For RC enthusiasts in the UK looking to upgrade their suspension geometry, the AS81660 represents genuine Team Associated engineering at an accessible price point. These aren't generic springs—they're purpose-built components that address real-world performance challenges observed during extensive track testing. If you're running an RC8B4.1, RC8B4.1e, RC8B4, or comparable 1:8 scale Team Associated buggy, upgrading to these 1.5D front springs could transform how your car feels on anything from smooth racing circuits to rough, unprepared terrain.
RC Model Shop stocks genuine Team Associated components, and these 16mm front springs are an ideal upgrade for anyone seeking to fine-tune their suspension package. Whether you're a club racer, a competitive driver, or simply passionate about getting the best performance from your RC car in the UK, these springs deliver measurable improvements in traction and handling consistency.
Key Features
- 1.5D Wire Construction (1.50mm Diameter) — The thinner 1.50mm wire diameter compared to traditional 1.6mm springs delivers a different natural frequency and reduces wire stress, allowing the spring to compress more readily and conform to low-grip track surfaces. This compliance is crucial for maintaining consistent traction on ungroomed terrain where conventional springs struggle.
- 4.65 lb/in Spring Rate — This specific spring rate sits within the new softer range developed for the RC8B4.1, offering compliance for low-grip surfaces whilst maintaining enough support for aggressive cornering and jumps. The rate is part of a complete front spring lineup ranging from 4.45 to 5.05 lb/in, allowing precise tuning to match track conditions.
- 68mm Free Length (L68) — Shortened from the previous 70mm standard, this 68mm length optimises compatibility with the lower RC8B4.1 shock towers, lowering the centre of gravity and improving aerodynamic efficiency whilst maintaining proper geometry.
- 8.25 Coil Count — The precise coil count contributes to the spring's natural frequency characteristics and ensures consistent performance across the full compression and extension range, critical for maintaining grip through repeated bump cycles.
- Colour-Marked Identification — Both ends of each spring feature colour marking to instantly distinguish 1.5D springs from traditional 1.6D versions, eliminating confusion during setup changes and ensuring you're using the correct springs for your intended tuning package.
- 0.25 Coil Variation Tolerance — Team Associated groups these springs with extremely tight tolerances, with only 0.25 coil variation between springs of the same rate. This precision allows experienced racers to fine-tune by mixing and matching springs, gaining microscopically adjusted stiffness to perfectly balance front and rear grip.
- Proven Race Development Pedigree — These springs were developed through extensive testing at DNC and Silver State, world-recognised desert racing events where suspension performance directly impacts lap times. The engineering represents Team Associated's commitment to competitive excellence.
- 16mm Shock Compatibility — These springs fit 16mm diameter shocks, a standard fitting across Team Associated's modern 1:8 scale range including the RC8B4.1, RC8B4.1e, and RC8B4, ensuring broad compatibility with popular platforms used throughout UK racing clubs.
Technical Performance
The development of 1.5D springs reflects sophisticated understanding of suspension dynamics in competitive racing. Team Associated engineers observed that whilst 1.6mm wire springs perform excellently on high-grip, well-prepared racing surfaces, they exhibited inconsistent grip on low-grip, ungroomed terrain. The root cause lies in spring mechanics: thinner wire alters the natural frequency and stress distribution, creating a spring that compresses more readily and can follow track imperfections without losing contact. The 4.65 lb/in rate paired with 1.5D wire construction produces superior bump compliance, allowing the suspension to absorb track irregularities whilst maintaining consistent tyre contact patch pressure. The 68mm length is engineered specifically for the RC8B4.1's lower shock tower geometry, optimising the suspension's mechanical advantage and keeping the chassis centre of gravity as low as possible. Quality engineering throughout: springs are manufactured to exacting standards with 0.25 coil variation across batches, meaning these springs respond identically from one to the next. The colour marking on both ends serves practical purposes during pit stops and setup adjustments—critical when managing multiple spring rates. Compared to older 70mm springs, the 2mm length reduction contributes meaningfully to handling characteristics, especially on vehicles that have been lowered or modified with lower shock mounting. These springs represent the culmination of Team Associated's 1:8 scale development programme and are suitable for both competitive track racing and high-performance recreational bashing where suspension response directly impacts enjoyment.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What is the difference between 1.5D and 1.6D springs? — The 1.5D designation refers to 1.50mm wire diameter, compared to 1.6mm on traditional springs. The thinner wire creates a different natural frequency and stress characteristic, allowing the spring to compress more readily and provide superior compliance on low-grip, ungroomed surfaces. Both 1.5D and 1.6D springs are colour-marked on both ends for easy identification, though 1.6D springs are only marked on one end.
- Which RC cars do these springs fit? — These 16mm front springs are designed for Team Associated 1:8 scale vehicles with 16mm shocks, specifically the RC8B4.1 and RC8B4.1e, but are also compatible with earlier RC8B4 models and other Team Associated 1:8 scale platforms using 16mm shock absorbers.
- Are 1.5D springs suitable for beginners? — These are performance suspension components designed for experienced racers and serious enthusiasts who understand suspension tuning. Beginners may find that mastering these springs' characteristics requires practice, though they're no more difficult to install than standard springs. For entry-level users, consulting experienced RC racers or staff at RC Model Shop is recommended before selecting spring rates.
- What track conditions are these springs best suited for? — Team Associated developed these 1.5D springs specifically for low-grip, ungroomed surfaces like those found at Desert Nationals Challenge and Silver State events. The 4.65 lb/in rate sits in the softer range of the 1.5D lineup (4.45-5.05 lb/in), making it ideal for rough terrain and loose surfaces. If you primarily race on high-grip, well-prepared tracks, the standard 1.6mm spring lineup may provide better performance.
- Can I use these springs with my older RC8B4? — Yes, the 16mm diameter is compatible with RC8B4 and other older Team Associated models using 16mm shock absorbers. However, these springs are optimised for the lower RC8B4.1 shock tower geometry. If your RC8B4 uses original shock tower height, you may need to adjust your setup or consider the previous 70mm spring length for optimal geometry.
- What makes these springs better than aftermarket options? — These springs carry the stamp of Team Associated's factory development team, tested extensively in competition conditions. The 0.25 coil variation tolerance and colour marking represent manufacturing precision rarely found in third-party suspension components. Using factory springs ensures you're running the exact specifications Team Associated engineers intended for your platform.
- Do I need to buy springs in pairs? — This product contains one pair of front springs. Many racers purchase multiple pairs in different rates to build a tuning library, allowing quick setup changes between track sessions or different events.
- How often should I replace front springs? — Springs don't wear out like tyres or bushings, but after extended use they can lose preload or become damaged from impacts. If your car feels less responsive or springs become visibly bent or discoloured, replacement is recommended. Regular inspection during maintenance is good practice.
