Overview
The Associated FT 16mm Pistons 8 x 1.3mm Tapered/Angled (AS81211) are precision-engineered shock pistons designed for serious RC enthusiasts who demand the very best in suspension performance. These CNC-machined components represent the pinnacle of shock tuning technology, allowing you to fine-tune your RC buggy's handling characteristics with surgical precision. Whether you're competing at the highest levels of RC racing in the UK or simply want to elevate your weekend bashing experience, these pistons deliver measurable improvements in how your RC car handles bumps, jumps and landing impacts.
Available as a pair, these Factory Team FT shock pistons are specifically engineered with a tapered profile and angled 1.3mm holes that work together to transform your vehicle's suspension behaviour. The innovative design philosophy behind these pistons recognises that suspension tuning is one of the most critical aspects of RC car setup, influencing everything from grip levels to stability through technical terrain. For RC buggy builders and competitors across the UK looking to extract maximum performance from their RC8B and RC8T series vehicles, these pistons represent an essential upgrade that delivers real, noticeable improvements in handling and jump characteristics.
What sets these shock pistons apart from standard alternatives is the combination of precision manufacturing and clever engineering. The tapered profile works in harmony with the angled holes to improve damping characteristics in a way that conventional straight-hole pistons simply cannot match. This attention to detail is what separates competitive-grade RC components from entry-level alternatives, and it's why serious RC competitors choose Associated Factory Team parts for their builds.
Key Features
- Tapered Profile Design — The carefully engineered tapered profile improves jumping characteristics and handling through bumps by modifying how the shock fluid moves through the piston, resulting in a more consistent and predictable suspension response that translates to better car control in all conditions.
- Angled Holes Technology — Rather than featuring straight holes drilled perpendicular to the piston, the angled holes create a more sophisticated fluid flow pattern that reduces harshness when landing from jumps and improves grip by allowing the use of lower oil weights without sacrificing damping.
- Precision CNC-Machined Construction — Every piston is manufactured to exacting tolerances using CNC machinery, ensuring perfect concentricity with your shock body, which eliminates binding and provides the consistent performance that competitive RC racing demands.
- Hole Diameter Engraving — Each piston is clearly engraved with its hole size (1.3mm in this case), making it immediately obvious which pistons you're holding and preventing installation errors or confusion during setup.
- Superior Fitment and Consistency — The precision manufacturing process ensures that both pistons in the pair are identically matched, providing repeatable, predictable suspension performance across the front and rear shocks for balanced handling characteristics.
- Lower Oil Weight Compatibility — By using angled holes instead of straight holes, these pistons allow you to run thinner shock oil weights while maintaining proper damping characteristics, which generates additional grip and improves the sensitivity of your suspension adjustments.
- Improved Jump Performance — The combination of tapered profile and angled holes helps your RC car jump flatter and land more consistently, reducing the risk of tip-overs and improving control during large jumps or tabletops.
Technical Performance
These shock pistons exemplify the engineering excellence that Associated has built its reputation upon. Manufactured using CNC precision machining, every aspect of these pistons is optimised for performance. The 16mm shock body compatibility makes these pistons suitable for a wide range of modern Associated RC buggies and truggies, whilst the specific 1.3mm hole diameter provides a middle-ground option between the available 1.2mm size for those seeking firmer damping characteristics. The tapered geometry is not merely aesthetic—it serves a functional purpose in controlling fluid flow rates and pressure distribution within the shock, directly affecting how the suspension compresses and extends under load. The angled holes represent a departure from traditional piston designs, allowing shock oil to flow at different rates depending on the direction and speed of piston movement. This creates a more sophisticated damping curve that automotive and motorcycle suspension engineers have known about for decades but which has only recently become practical for RC car components due to precision manufacturing advances. When combined with the correct shock oil viscosity (which can now be lighter thanks to the improved design), these pistons create a suspension system that feels more responsive and predictable. The precision of manufacture means that both pistons in the pair will perform identically, providing the matching front and rear suspension geometry that competitive RC racing demands. For racers in the UK competing in buggy or truggy classes, this level of consistency is often the difference between winning and losing, as it allows drivers to make precise adjustments to suspension geometry knowing that the mechanical components will respond predictably.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What is the difference between 1.2mm and 1.3mm hole sizes on these shock pistons? — The hole diameter directly affects damping stiffness. The 1.2mm version (AS81210) provides firmer damping, whilst the 1.3mm version (AS81211) you're looking at allows more fluid flow, resulting in a softer suspension feel. Choose 1.3mm for bumpy terrain where you need more compliance, or 1.2mm for high-grip surfaces where you want a stiffer response. Many competitors keep both versions in their parts box for different track conditions.
- Which Associated RC vehicles are these pistons compatible with? — These 16mm shock pistons fit the RC8B3.1, RC8B3.1e, RC8T3.1, RC8T3.1e, RC8B3.2, RC8B3.2e, RC8T3.2, RC8T3.2e, RC8B4, RC8B4e, RC8T4, RC8T4e, RC8B4.1 and RC8B4.1e. Always check your vehicle's manual to confirm shock body size before purchasing, as some vintage Associated vehicles used different shock sizes.
- How do angled holes improve suspension performance compared to standard straight-hole pistons? — Angled holes create asymmetrical damping, meaning the suspension responds differently during compression versus extension, and varies based on the speed of movement. This allows engineers to create a more sophisticated suspension tune that improves both grip and comfort. The angled design also reduces shock harshness when landing from jumps, as it controls the initial impact differently than compression damping during cornering.
- Can I use these pistons with different shock oil weights? — Yes, one of the key advantages of the angled hole design is that it allows you to run lower shock oil weights than you would with equivalent straight-hole pistons. For example, if you were running 30-weight oil with standard pistons, you might run 20-weight or even 15-weight with these pistons whilst maintaining similar overall damping. Lower weights provide more grip but require more precise tuning. Consult the Associated setup guide and experiment with different weights to find what works best for your specific track or terrain conditions.
- Are these suitable for beginners to RC? — Whilst these are precision components that will work on any compatible vehicle, they are really designed for racers and serious enthusiasts who understand suspension tuning. Beginners will benefit from the improved performance, but the real advantages only become apparent once you have developed the car control skills and suspension knowledge to tune them properly. If you're new to RC, consider starting with your vehicle's stock pistons and upgrading once you understand how suspension affects handling.
- How often should shock pistons be replaced? — With proper maintenance, CNC-machined pistons like these can last for hundreds of running hours. However, if you notice that your suspension feels less responsive, your shock bodies are leaking fluid, or you've crashed heavily and suspect internal damage, it's time to replace them. Always inspect pistons during routine shock maintenance, and replace them if you see scoring or damage to the sealing surfaces.
- What makes these Factory Team pistons different from standard Associated pistons? — Factory Team (FT) components represent Associated's competition-grade product line, manufactured to tighter tolerances and using more advanced engineering. These pistons showcase features like the tapered profile and angled holes that aren't found on basic pistons. They're designed for racers who want measurable performance advantages at the highest levels of RC competition.
