Overview
The Associated FT 16mm Shock Pistons 8 x 1.2mm Tapered/Angled (AS81210) represent precision engineering at its finest for serious RC enthusiasts in the UK. These Factory Team pistons are specifically designed to elevate your RC car's performance whether you're competing at the track or enjoying weekend bashings. The tapered profile and innovative angled hole design work together to transform how your vehicle handles bumps, jumps and rough terrain. If you're looking to upgrade your RC buggy, truck or truggy with high-quality shock components, these pistons deliver measurable improvements in handling consistency and jump characteristics that even experienced builders will appreciate.
These CNC-machined shock pistons fit 16mm shock bodies found on a wide range of Associated RC vehicles including the RC8B3.1, RC8B3.1e, RC8T3.1, RC8T3.1e, RC8B3.2, RC8B3.2e, RC8T3.2, RC8T3.2e, RC8B4, RC8B4e, RC8T4, RC8T4e, RC8B4.1 and RC8B4.1e. Whether you own a buggy or truck platform, these pistons are engineered to work seamlessly with your existing setup. The attention to detail in the manufacturing process ensures optimal fitment and concentricity with your shock body, which directly translates to improved performance consistency and reliability during competitive racing or recreational driving.
What makes these pistons stand out in the RC car parts UK market is the combination of tapered design and angled ports. This isn't just cosmetic engineering—it's functional design that changes how your vehicle behaves dynamically. The angled holes allow you to run lighter shock oil weights, which generates more mechanical grip and gives you greater tuning flexibility. For racers and serious hobbyists, this means you can fine-tune your vehicle's suspension characteristics without purchasing multiple piston sets, making these an investment in both performance and versatility.
Key Features
- Tapered Profile with Angled Holes — The tapered geometry combined with eight angled 1.2mm holes significantly improves jumping characteristics, allowing your RC car to jump flatter and land more predictably on rough ground. This design reduces the impact forces during landing and provides better handling through bumpy sections, which is critical for competitive racing and terrain navigation in the UK.
- Precision CNC-Machined Construction — Each piston is manufactured using precision CNC machinery to ensure the best possible fitment and concentricity with your 16mm shock body. This level of manufacturing consistency improves performance reliability and ensures that every piston performs identically, eliminating variables that can affect handling between your front and rear shocks.
- Lower Oil Weight Capability — The angled hole design allows you to run lighter shock oil weights without sacrificing performance, which generates additional mechanical grip. This feature is particularly valuable for competitive racers who need to squeeze every bit of traction from their setup, and it provides flexibility for adapting to different track conditions and weather.
- Hole Diameter Engraved Identification — Each piston is engraved with its hole diameter (1.2mm in this case) for quick and easy identification, preventing installation errors and making inventory management simple whether you're a weekend basher or serious competitor with multiple RC vehicles.
- Supplied as a Pair — These pistons come as a matched pair, meaning you can use one in your front shock and one in your rear shock with confidence that they've been manufactured to identical specifications for balanced handling characteristics.
- Wide Vehicle Compatibility — Compatible with multiple generations of Associated RC vehicles including the RC8 series, these pistons work with 16mm shock bodies across buggies and trucks, making them a practical upgrade for many builders in the RC car UK community.
Technical Performance
The Associated FT 16mm Pistons represent a significant step forward in shock piston design for competitive and recreational RC racing. The tapered profile is engineered specifically to improve damping characteristics through the middle stroke of the shock, which is where most of the dynamic action occurs during jumps and landing impacts. The eight angled 1.2mm holes are precision-positioned to create flow characteristics that allow lower viscosity oils to perform effectively, expanding your tuning window considerably. This is particularly important for racers who need to adapt quickly to changing track conditions—instead of purchasing additional piston sets with different hole sizes, you can simply switch to a lighter or heavier oil and achieve the desired suspension feel. The precision CNC machining ensures that the piston body maintains perfect concentricity with the shock tube, eliminating binding and inconsistent damping that can occur with lower-quality pistons. This level of manufacturing consistency is essential for competitive racing where every millisecond and every millimetre of suspension travel contributes to overall performance. The pistons are engineered to work flawlessly with your Associated RC vehicle's existing shock system, providing improved jump characteristics that allow your vehicle to land flatter and with better predictability. For off-road RC racing in the UK, where terrain is often bumpy and unpredictable, these pistons help your suspension absorb impacts more effectively whilst maintaining grip and control through the roughest sections.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What RC cars are these pistons compatible with? — These FT 16mm pistons fit 16mm shock bodies on the Associated RC8B3.1, RC8B3.1e, RC8T3.1, RC8T3.1e, RC8B3.2, RC8B3.2e, RC8T3.2, RC8T3.2e, RC8B4, RC8B4e, RC8T4, RC8T4e, RC8B4.1 and RC8B4.1e models. Whether you're running a buggy or truck platform, check that your vehicle has 16mm shock bodies to ensure proper fitment.
- How do the angled holes improve performance? — The angled holes allow you to run lighter shock oil weights whilst maintaining effective damping, which generates more mechanical grip from your tyres. This design gives you greater tuning flexibility and allows you to adapt your setup quickly to different track conditions without purchasing multiple piston sets with different hole diameters.
- Are these pistons suitable for competitive racing? — Yes, these are Factory Team pistons specifically engineered for serious racers and competitive drivers. The precision CNC machining ensures consistency between pistons, and the tapered design with angled holes provides the performance characteristics that competitive racers demand for jump consistency and bump handling.
- What is the difference between the 1.2mm and 1.3mm hole options? — Associated offers these pistons in two hole diameter options: 1.2mm (this product) and 1.3mm. The 1.2mm holes create more resistance to oil flow and are generally used for lighter setups or lower-grip surfaces, whilst 1.3mm holes allow more oil flow and are often used for higher-grip surfaces or heavier setups. Each piston is engraved with its hole size for easy identification.
- How do tapered pistons improve handling? — The tapered profile improves handling through bumps by providing better damping control during mid-stroke compression and extension. This design makes the car jump flatter and land more predictably, which is particularly valuable on rough terrain where suspension travel consistency is critical for maintaining control and speed.
- Can I use just one piston or do I need a pair? — These are sold as a matched pair for good reason—using identical pistons in your front and rear shocks ensures balanced handling characteristics. For best performance, you should use both pistons as intended, with one in your front shock and one in your rear shock.
