Overview

The RC4WD 540 Crawler Brushed Motor 80T (Z-E0001) is a purpose-built performance motor designed specifically for rock crawling and scale driving enthusiasts across the UK. Whether you're navigating technical terrain in your RC crawler or enjoying precise, slow-speed control on challenging trails, this 80-turn motor delivers the torque and throttle response that serious RC drivers demand. Built with a custom 540 steel can and chrome-plated finish, this motor represents RC4WD's commitment to creating specialist components that enhance the performance of popular RC crawlers and scale vehicles.

This brushed RC motor is engineered for drivers who prioritise smooth, controllable power delivery over raw speed. The 80-turn configuration makes it ideal for rock crawling applications where low-end torque and precise speed control are essential for navigating obstacles and technical sections. Whether you're upgrading an existing crawler setup or building a new rock crawling machine, the RC4WD 540 80T motor is a recognised choice among UK RC enthusiasts and offers outstanding value for the performance you receive.

Compatibility extends across a wide range of popular platforms, including the Axial AX10, Trail Finder, SCX10 Honcho, SCX10 Dingo, Wraith and Ridgecrest models. The motor's small footprint and custom design mean it integrates seamlessly into crawler builds without requiring significant modifications to your chassis or drivetrain.

Key Features

  • Custom 540 Steel Case with Chrome-Plated Finish — The motor housing is manufactured from premium steel and finished with a protective chrome plate, ensuring durability and a professional appearance that will look at home in any scale crawler setup. This custom design is purpose-built for the specific demands of rock crawling and technical terrain driving.
  • 80-Turn Configuration for Maximum Torque — The 80-turn windings deliver significantly higher torque than higher-KV motors, making this setup ideal for low-speed rock crawling where climbing power and obstacle negotiation are paramount. This turn count also provides the slow, controlled speeds essential for scale driving applications.
  • Built-In Capacitor for Glitch Minimisation — An integrated capacitor helps eliminate electrical noise and glitching that can interrupt smooth throttle response during technical driving sections. This feature ensures reliable, consistent power delivery even in demanding conditions.
  • High-Torque Magnet and Rotor Assembly — The motor's rotor and magnet system are optimised to produce maximum torque at low RPM, providing the pulling power needed for climbing steep grades and navigating rocky terrain without losing control or stalling.
  • Pre-Wired with 3mm Bullet Connectors — The motor comes ready to connect, with 3mm bullet connectors pre-installed for quick integration into your RC setup. Please note that Axial ESCs typically feature 4mm connectors, but these can be crimped up to 3mm connectors if required, ensuring broad compatibility across different crawler builds.
  • Fits All 3mm Pinions — The motor is designed to accept standard 3mm pinions, offering flexibility in gear ratio selection and allowing you to tune the performance characteristics to match your specific crawling style and terrain preferences.
  • Compact 50mm Length — The small footprint ensures minimal intrusion into your chassis design, making installation straightforward in tight motor compartments and maintaining optimal weight distribution in your crawler.
  • Tuned for Rock Climbing and Scale Driving — Every aspect of this motor's design has been optimised specifically for the unique demands of rock crawling and scale RC applications, ensuring that throttle response, torque delivery and overall performance characteristics are perfectly aligned with how you'll drive your crawler.
  • Polished, Non-Replaceable Bushings — The motor features polished bushings that provide smooth, low-friction rotation. Please note these bushings are non-replaceable, so careful maintenance and regular motor spray after trail runs will help keep your motor in peak condition.

Technical Performance

The RC4WD 540 Crawler Brushed Motor 80T delivers impressive performance figures specifically calibrated for crawling applications. At 7.2 volts, the 80-turn configuration produces a no-load speed of 5,500 RPM (±10%) with a current draw of just 0.45A, demonstrating the efficiency of this motor design. At maximum efficiency, the motor runs at 4,450 RPM (±10%) whilst drawing 1.38A, providing the sweet spot where power delivery and current consumption are perfectly balanced for extended trail runs. The motor's compact 50mm length combined with its high-torque magnet and rotor assembly makes it an ideal drop-in upgrade for popular 1/10 scale crawlers from manufacturers including Axial. The design operating temperature range spans from -30°C to +80°C, ensuring reliable performance across UK weather conditions from winter trail sessions to summer rock crawling adventures. Motor end play is carefully controlled to a maximum of 0.50mm, maintaining precise mechanical tolerances that contribute to smooth, responsive throttle control. The noise level remains below 60 dB, ensuring your driving experience isn't marred by excessive motor whine. The chrome-plated steel can construction provides durability and protection against the mud, water and impacts inherent to serious rock crawling, whilst the built-in capacitor eliminates electrical glitching that could compromise control during technical sections. RC4WD recommends applying motor spray after trail runs to maintain optimal internal condition and extend motor life.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Will this RC4WD 540 motor fit my Axial crawler? — Yes, this motor is specifically designed for popular Axial platforms including the AX10, Trail Finder, SCX10 Honcho, SCX10 Dingo, Wraith and Ridgecrest. The compact 50mm length and standard 540 size ensure straightforward installation in these vehicles.
  • What battery does the RC4WD 540 80T motor need? — The motor is designed to operate at 7.2 volts, which corresponds to 2S LiPo or NiMH battery packs. Whilst some users have successfully run this motor on 3S LiPo packs in theory, 2S is the recommended sweet spot for optimal performance and longevity in crawling applications.
  • Is this motor suitable for beginners to RC crawling? — Absolutely. The 80-turn configuration and torque-focused design make this an excellent choice for anyone new to rock crawling. The slow, controllable speeds and strong low-end power help build confidence on technical terrain, and the straightforward installation process means you can upgrade your existing crawler without extensive modifications.
  • What makes the 80-turn motor different from other RC4WD motor options? — RC4WD offers this motor in five different turn counts ranging from 35T to 80T. The higher the turn count, the slower the motor but the higher the torque output. The 80T configuration is the slowest and most torque-rich option, making it perfect for technical rock crawling and scale driving where control and climbing power matter more than top speed.
  • Can I use this motor with an Axial ESC? — Yes, though Axial ESCs typically feature 4mm bullet connectors whilst this motor comes pre-wired with 3mm connectors. The connectors can be crimped to adapt between the two sizes, making integration with Axial electronics straightforward.
  • How do I maintain this motor to ensure long life? — RC4WD specifically recommends applying motor spray after each trail run to keep the internal components clean and protected. This practice will help maintain optimal performance and extend the motor's operational lifespan significantly.
