Overview
The Spektrum SPM 3549-1000Kv Outrunner Brushless Motor is a high-performance brushless motor designed for RC aircraft and scale models that demand reliable, efficient power delivery. This 14-pole outrunner motor represents Spektrum's commitment to quality engineering and performance, making it an excellent choice for hobbyists and enthusiasts looking to upgrade their RC plane UK setups or build ready to run RC aircraft models. The 1000Kv rating provides a balanced combination of torque and speed, making this motor versatile enough for a range of applications across different aircraft types and weight classes.
As an outrunner brushless motor, this unit features a design where the permanent magnets rotate around the stationary windings, creating smooth, efficient operation with minimal vibration. This design philosophy is particularly valued in the RC hobby community because outrunner motors deliver excellent power-to-weight ratios and generate the kind of responsive performance that serious RC enthusiasts demand. Whether you're involved in competitive RC flying, casual weekend flights, or building custom aircraft from plans, this brushless RC motor provides the reliability and performance characteristics that have made Spektrum a trusted name in RC electronics worldwide.
The motor's 14-pole configuration ensures smooth commutation and efficient energy conversion, delivering consistent power across the entire throttle range. This makes it particularly suitable for pilots who want predictable handling characteristics and smooth acceleration curves. The compact size and lightweight construction make it easy to integrate into existing airframes or custom builds, whilst maintaining the structural integrity and balance necessary for safe, enjoyable flight.
Key Features
- 14-Pole Outrunner Design — The 14-pole configuration provides smooth power delivery and efficient commutation, which means you get predictable thrust throughout your flight without the jerky power delivery or cogging that can occur with fewer poles. This translates to better handling characteristics and more enjoyable flights, particularly during precision manoeuvres or tight turns.
- 1000Kv Rating — With a 1000Kv constant, this motor spins at 1000 RPM per volt of applied battery voltage, offering an excellent middle ground between speed and torque. This makes it suitable for a wide variety of aircraft types and weight classes, from smaller sport flyers to larger scale models, without requiring extensive tuning or gearing calculations.
- Brushless Technology — Unlike brushed motors, the brushless design eliminates carbon brush wear and maintenance, delivering consistent performance over hundreds of flight hours. Brushless motors also run cooler and more efficiently, extending flight times and reducing the thermal stress on your electronics and airframe structure.
- Outrunner Configuration — The external rotating design of an outrunner motor provides higher torque at lower speeds compared to inrunner alternatives, making it ideal for direct-drive applications where you need strong initial acceleration and reliable mid-range power without gearboxes or complex transmission systems.
- Spektrum Quality Standards — Manufactured by Spektrum, a recognised leader in RC electronics and authorised dealer support across the UK, this motor benefits from rigorous quality control and engineering excellence. Spektrum products are known for reliability and compatibility with a wide range of RC systems and accessories.
Technical Performance
The SPM 3549-1000Kv motor represents a well-engineered solution for RC aircraft applications, combining efficient brushless technology with the proven outrunner configuration that has become standard in modern RC flying. The 1000Kv rating provides approximately 1000 RPM per applied volt, meaning on a typical 3-cell LiPo battery (11.1V), you'd see motor speeds in the region of 11,100 RPM under no-load conditions. This speed range is ideal for many aircraft types and allows for flexible propeller selection to match your specific airframe and flight characteristics. The 14-pole design ensures smooth, consistent torque delivery throughout the throttle range, which is essential for predictable flight handling and smooth acceleration characteristics that experienced pilots demand. The brushless construction means there are no brushes to wear, no maintenance intervals to track, and no performance degradation over time due to brush dust accumulation. Modern brushless technology also runs significantly cooler than brushed alternatives, which means less thermal stress on your ESC, battery connections, and airframe components. This motor works best with appropriate propeller selection and a compatible electronic speed controller (ESC) rated for the expected current draw of your specific aircraft configuration. The outrunner design provides inherent torque characteristics that make it particularly suited to direct-drive applications where gearboxes would add unnecessary complexity and weight.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What aircraft types is this 1000Kv brushless motor suitable for? — The 1000Kv rating makes this motor versatile across a range of aircraft types, from small-to-medium sport flyers through to larger scale models. The specific aircraft compatibility depends on your desired performance characteristics, propeller selection, and the total weight of your model. Lighter aircraft will achieve higher speeds with the same propeller, whilst heavier models will benefit from the motor's strong torque characteristics. Always consult your airframe manufacturer's recommendations for motor specifications if building from a known design.
- Is this brushless motor suitable for beginners? — Yes, this motor is suitable for beginner RC pilots, particularly those upgrading from brushed motors or building their first electric-powered aircraft from plans. However, you'll need to pair it with appropriate supporting electronics including an ESC, battery system, and radio equipment. If you're entirely new to RC aviation, consider purchasing a ready to run RC aircraft that includes all necessary components, and then use this motor as a replacement when you're ready to upgrade or repair your equipment.
- What battery voltage does this motor require? — The 1000Kv rating means the motor speed scales proportionally with battery voltage. A 2S LiPo battery (7.4V nominal) would produce approximately 7,400 RPM, whilst a 3S battery (11.1V nominal) would produce approximately 11,100 RPM under no-load conditions. Your ESC and propeller selection must be compatible with your chosen battery voltage. Most small-to-medium electric aircraft use either 2S or 3S LiPo batteries, though some larger models may use 4S or higher configurations.
- What size ESC do I need with this motor? — The required ESC current rating depends on your complete system configuration, including propeller type, battery voltage, aircraft weight, and desired performance level. The current draw of a motor increases with load, so a larger propeller or heavier aircraft will draw more current. As a general guide, select an ESC with a continuous current rating that exceeds your expected maximum draw by at least 20 percent. Spektrum offers various ESC options that are compatible with brushless motors and will provide appropriate protection and performance characteristics for your system.
- How does the 14-pole design benefit flight performance? — The 14-pole configuration means there are 14 permanent magnets rotating around 14 electromagnet coils, providing smooth commutation (the switching of electrical current through the motor windings). This results in consistent, predictable power delivery with minimal cogging or jerky behaviour. You'll notice smoother acceleration, better mid-range throttle response, and more refined overall flight characteristics compared to lower pole-count motors. This is particularly noticeable when performing precision manoeuvres or flying in tight areas where smooth control is essential.
