Overview
The Traxxas GT-Maxx Shock Rebuild Kit (TRX8962) is an essential maintenance component for RC enthusiasts who own Traxxas models equipped with GT-Maxx suspension technology. If you're serious about keeping your RC car UK-ready for consistent performance, shock maintenance is absolutely critical. This rebuild kit contains everything needed to refresh and restore two complete shock absorbers to like-new condition, ensuring your suspension delivers optimal damping, control and responsiveness on every run. Whether you're a competitive racer, a weekend basher, or someone discovering the world of RC cars for the first time, understanding shock maintenance is fundamental to getting the most from your Traxxas RC model.
Over time, RC shock absorbers experience wear and tear from repeated compression cycles, impacts, and exposure to dust and moisture. The internal components—particularly the pistons, seals, and bladders—gradually degrade, leading to poor suspension response, inconsistent handling, and reduced overall performance. Rather than replacing expensive complete shock units, this dedicated rebuild kit allows you to revitalise your existing shocks with genuine Traxxas parts, representing outstanding value for money and a smart choice for cost-conscious RC car enthusiasts across the UK. The kit is precision-engineered to Traxxas standards and compatible with a wide range of their most popular models, making it an indispensable addition to any serious RC hobbyist's spares collection.
Maintaining your suspension isn't just about performance—it's about longevity and reliability. By refreshing your shocks with this complete rebuild kit, you're extending the life of your expensive RC model, ensuring consistent handling characteristics, and maximising your enjoyment and investment. This is the kind of preventative maintenance that separates weekend bashers from serious RC enthusiasts who understand that a well-maintained vehicle always performs better.
Key Features
- Complete Dual-Shock Rebuild Solution — This kit renews two complete shocks with all the internal components you need, saving you significant money compared to purchasing new shock assemblies and allowing you to maintain peak suspension performance across your RC model's front or rear axle.
- Genuine Traxxas Components — Every part in this rebuild kit is authentic Traxxas engineering, including lower cartridges, pistons, piston nuts, bladders and assembly screws, ensuring compatibility and reliability with your existing shock towers and mounts.
- Lower Cartridges (2) — The lower cartridges form the core of your shock absorber, housing the internal pistons and damping fluid; replacing these restores the structural integrity and damping characteristics of your suspension system.
- Precision Pistons (2) — High-quality pistons with carefully engineered orifices control the flow of shock fluid and determine damping rates; fresh pistons eliminate wear-related performance degradation and ensure consistent suspension response.
- Piston Nuts (2) — These secure the pistons in place within the shock cartridge; genuine Traxxas piston nuts guarantee proper fitment and prevent piston movement during aggressive driving or jumps.
- Replacement Bladders (2) — Bladders maintain gas pressure inside the shock absorber and prevent fluid aeration; new bladders eliminate any loss of pressure that can occur through normal use and restore proper cushioning.
- Assembly Screws Included — All fasteners required to complete the rebuild are supplied, ensuring you have everything needed to reassemble your shocks without needing to source additional parts.
- Wide Model Compatibility — This kit is compatible with numerous Traxxas models including the Maxx Slash 1/8 4WD brushless short course truck (all colour variants), the Sledge Belted 1:8 4WD brushless electric monster truck (all colour variants), and the WideMaxx monster truck line (all colour variants), making it a versatile spares option for multi-model collections.
- Professional Maintenance Tool — Regular shock rebuilds using genuine parts are a recognised best practice in the RC hobby, performed by competitive drivers and serious enthusiasts to maintain peak vehicle performance and handling consistency.
Technical Performance
The GT-Maxx shock system represents Traxxas's commitment to advanced suspension engineering for their largest and most capable vehicles. This rebuild kit addresses the critical maintenance need for these sophisticated shock absorbers, which are engineered to handle extreme off-road conditions, high-speed runs, and aggressive jumps. The assembled lower cartridges included in this kit are precision-manufactured from durable materials designed to withstand the forces generated by 1/8 scale brushless RC vehicles running on 6S LiPo batteries. The pistons are engineered with specific orifice configurations that control the rate at which shock fluid passes through them, directly affecting how quickly the suspension compresses and extends. Proper piston condition is essential for maintaining consistent damping rates—worn pistons lead to erratic suspension behaviour and unpredictable handling. The bladders function as pressure accumulators, maintaining nitrogen gas pressure that keeps the shock fluid separated and prevents foaming that would compromise damping performance. By including all these critical components in a single rebuild kit, Traxxas enables owners to perform comprehensive maintenance that restores suspension performance to specification without the expense and complexity of complete shock replacement. The inclusion of assembly screws ensures that the rebuild process is straightforward for experienced RC enthusiasts with basic mechanical knowledge, though many prefer to entrust this work to specialist RC shops or experienced community members.

Frequently Asked Questions
- When should I rebuild my GT-Maxx shocks? — Traxxas recommends shock rebuilds as part of regular preventative maintenance, typically after 20-40 hours of running time depending on usage intensity. Signs that rebuilds are needed include reduced suspension responsiveness, inconsistent damping feel, visible oil leakage from shock bodies, or performance changes after impacts. Many competitive RC drivers rebuild shocks every few months as part of their pre-race preparation routine to ensure consistent vehicle handling.
- Can a beginner perform this rebuild? — Shock rebuilds require some mechanical skill and understanding of RC suspension systems. While experienced RC enthusiasts with basic tools can complete this rebuild, many beginners prefer to have professional RC shops perform the work or to learn the process under guidance from experienced community members. The process involves careful handling of small parts, proper assembly sequence, and understanding how to set damping rates, which is why some owners choose to outsource this maintenance task.
- Is this a genuine Traxxas product? — Yes, the TRX8962 rebuild kit is a genuine Traxxas part manufactured to their exact specifications. Purchasing from authorised retailers like RC Model Shop ensures you receive authentic components with full compatibility and warranty protection, rather than aftermarket or counterfeit parts that may not fit properly or perform as designed.
- How long do the components in this kit last? — The lifespan depends on driving style, frequency of use, and maintenance practices. Components typically degrade gradually over 20-40 hours of active running, though gentle driving may extend this period. Using this rebuild kit restores performance to like-new levels. Some enthusiasts rebuild shocks multiple times per season during competitive racing seasons to maintain peak performance.
- What tools do I need to perform the rebuild? — You'll require basic RC tools including small screwdrivers, possibly a small vice or clamp to hold shock bodies during disassembly, and preferably shock spring compressors if you need to adjust damping. Many RC shops sell shock rebuild tool kits specifically designed for this purpose, making the process safer and more efficient.
- Why is shock maintenance important for my brushless RC vehicle? — Modern brushless RC vehicles like the Traxxas Sledge and Maxx Slash are capable of extreme performance, with high-speed running and aggressive jumping that places enormous forces on suspension components. Worn shocks cannot absorb these impacts effectively, leading to unpredictable handling, reduced traction, and potential damage to other chassis components. Proper shock maintenance ensures your brushless RC model performs safely and reliably at the levels it was designed for.
- Can I use this kit on any Traxxas model? — No, this kit is specifically designed for GT-Maxx equipped models. Using it on incompatible shock types may result in poor fitment or performance. Always verify your vehicle's shock system before purchasing. The compatibility list provided includes all models that use GT-Maxx suspension technology.
