Overview
The Traxxas Rebuild kit for GTX shocks is an essential maintenance component for serious RC enthusiasts who own X-Maxx, XRT, or Funco Motorsports Pro Scale vehicles. This comprehensive shock rebuild kit allows you to restore your GTX shocks to like-new performance, ensuring your RC monster truck or sand car maintains optimal suspension responsiveness and handling characteristics. Whether you're a weekend basher enjoying the latest RC car UK has to offer, or a dedicated racer pushing your brushless RC monster truck to its limits, this rebuild kit represents an affordable way to extend the life of your suspension components and keep your model performing at its best.
Traxxas GTX shocks are precision-engineered components featuring hard-anodised aluminium bodies with friction-fighting PTFE-coated bores and titanium-nitride (TiN) coated shafts. Over time, the seals that hold the oil inside these shocks become consumable parts requiring periodic replacement. The TRX7762X rebuild kit provides everything needed to refresh two complete shocks, making it an economical choice for maintaining your high-performance RC suspension. This kit is specifically designed for GTX shock systems found on larger-scale Traxxas models, offering the assembled components needed to bring worn shocks back to factory specifications.
Regular shock maintenance is key to maintaining consistent handling and performance in your RC off-road vehicle. Shocks subjected to harsh terrain, dusty and gritty surfaces, or intensive racing schedules will wear seals out more rapidly than those operating in smoother conditions. This rebuild kit makes maintenance straightforward and affordable, allowing any RC enthusiast to perform professional-level shock service without specialised equipment or expertise.
Key Features
- Assembled Lower Cartridges — The kit includes pre-assembled lower cartridges, eliminating the need to source multiple individual components and significantly reducing assembly time. This means you can complete your shock rebuild more efficiently whilst maintaining precision engineering standards.
- Complete Piston Set — New pistons are included in this kit, allowing you to replace worn or damaged pistons that may have developed excessive wear or lost their original fitment. This ensures smooth, consistent suspension action without binding or sticking.
- Piston Nuts — Proper piston retention is critical for shock performance, and this kit includes all necessary piston nuts to secure your components. Using fresh piston nuts ensures reliable retention and eliminates the risk of piston movement during aggressive driving.
- Bladder System Components — The bladders included in this kit maintain proper air charge within your shocks, which is essential for consistent spring rate and rebound characteristics. Fresh bladders eliminate the risk of slow leaks that can compromise suspension performance.
- Refreshes Two Complete Shocks — This single kit contains all components needed to rebuild a pair of shocks, making it economical when maintaining the full suspension of your X-Maxx or XRT. It's best practice to rebuild all shocks together to ensure equal performance across your suspension setup.
- Compatible with Multiple Traxxas Models — This kit works with X-Maxx, XRT, and Funco Motorsports Pro Scale vehicles, providing compatibility across Traxxas' premium monster truck and sand car lineup.
- Factory Traxxas Quality — As an official Traxxas rebuild kit, every component meets original equipment manufacturer specifications, ensuring your suspension performs exactly as Traxxas engineered it.
Technical Performance
Traxxas GTX shocks represent the pinnacle of RC suspension technology for large-scale vehicles. These shocks feature hard-anodised aluminium bodies that provide exceptional durability whilst keeping weight to a minimum. The friction-fighting PTFE-coated bores significantly reduce seal friction and heat generation, allowing shocks to absorb impacts smoothly across a wide range of terrain conditions. The titanium-nitride coated shafts resist corrosion and scoring, maintaining their mirror-like finish which is essential for preventing oil weeping and maintaining consistent damping. When properly maintained with regular rebuild kits like the TRX7762X, these shocks deliver the responsive, controlled suspension action that serious RC racers and bashers demand. The performance of your shocks directly impacts your RC car's handling characteristics, bump absorption, stability during cornering, and overall ride quality. By maintaining fresh seals, pistons, and proper oil charge through periodic rebuilds, you ensure your suspension delivers peak performance every time you take your Traxxas out for a session. The sealed design of the GTX system protects internal components from dust and water, making these shocks suitable for aggressive off-road driving conditions encountered by UK RC enthusiasts tackling everything from dusty tracks to wet terrain.

Frequently Asked Questions
- How often should I rebuild my GTX shocks? — There is no fixed service interval as seal life varies with surface type and terrain. Shocks subjected to harsh terrain and dusty, gritty surfaces will wear seals out more rapidly than those operating in smoother terrain and cleaner conditions. Regular inspection is key; rebuild if you discover any shocks are very wet where the shaft exits the body, have leaked oil, have scored, scratched, or bent shafts, or feel rough, lumpy, or otherwise not smooth when compressed with the spring removed. It's good practice to rebuild all shocks together even if only one or two seem to need rebuilding.
- Can a beginner perform this shock rebuild? — Yes, this rebuild is suitable for RC hobbyists of all skill levels. Whilst the process requires attention to detail and proper technique, Traxxas provides comprehensive guidance and the components are straightforward to install. The most important techniques involve protecting the shock shaft from damage when removing the rod end—using side cutters or padded pliers—and properly bleeding air bubbles when refilling the shock with oil. Taking your time with each step ensures successful results.
- What shock oil should I use? — Traxxas recommends silicone shock oil, with 30 weight being standard for most driving conditions. The Traxxas 5038X shock oil set includes seven different weights (20 to 80) allowing you to tune shock performance to match your specific terrain and driving style. Lighter weight oils provide softer suspension response, whilst heavier weights provide firmer damping.
- Do I need to replace the piston and shaft every rebuild? — No. Plastic pistons sliding against PTFE-coated aluminium in an oil bath do not create significant wear, and titanium-nitride coated shafts should outlast many seals. However, if the piston fit becomes sloppy, if you want to change from 2-hole to 3-hole pistons for different handling characteristics, or if shafts become damaged or scuffed and lose their shine, then replacement is recommended as dulled shafts become prone to weeping oil.
- What is the difference between GTX shocks and other Traxxas shock types? — GTX shocks are mid-range performance shocks featuring hard-anodised aluminium bodies with PTFE-coated bores. They offer excellent performance for high-speed off-road driving on models like the X-Maxx and XRT. Traxxas also manufactures Ultra Shocks and GTR aluminium-body shocks, each with specific applications. The GTX system offers an optimal balance of performance, durability, and value for serious RC enthusiasts.
- How do I know if my shock rebuild was successful? — After completing the rebuild and refilling the shock with proper technique, compress the shock fully and release it. The shaft should extend to between one-third and one-half of full extension on its own. If the shaft extends too far or not at all, or if you feel or hear air bubbles in the oil, the oil level needs adjustment. Too much oil causes excessive rebound extension; too little oil causes weak rebound or leaves air bubbles in the system.
- Can I use this kit on other Traxxas models? — The TRX7762X GTX rebuild kit is specifically designed for GTX shocks found on X-Maxx, XRT, and Funco Motorsports Pro Scale vehicles. It is not compatible with other Traxxas shock systems such as Ultra Shocks or GTR shocks, which use different internal components and sealing systems.
