The engineering behind this component ensures smooth power delivery, reduced vibration, and the ability to handle full-range suspension articulation without limitation.
Key Features
- Steel Construction with Black-Oxide Coating — The durable black-oxide coating provides superior rust prevention and protection against the elements, ensuring your driveshaft remains corrosion-free even in wet British weather conditions typical across the UK RC racing scene.
- Constant-Velocity Design for Smooth Power Transfer — The CV (constant-velocity) engineering delivers efficient power transfer to the wheels whilst maintaining consistent torque delivery, which is critical for maintaining traction and control during aggressive driving.
- Splined Telescoping Design for Full Articulation — Traxxas' proprietary telescoping design with splines allows the driveshaft to compress and extend freely, enabling full-range suspension travel without any need to compromise or limit your truck's suspension geometry.
- Bearings Secure Drive Pins on the Axle Side — The integrated bearings prevent back-out of the drive pins, which is essential for maintaining connection reliability during high-torque situations and preventing catastrophic driveline failure.
- Large-Bore Drive Pins with Press-Fit Design — Large-bore drive pins are precision press-fit on the differential side and slot into heavy-duty steel drive cups, creating a robust joint capable of handling brushless motor torque without slipping or damage.
- Rubber-Sealed Bearings Keep Out Dirt — The sealed bearing design protects internal components from dirt, dust, and moisture ingress, extending component lifespan and reducing maintenance requirements during intensive RC driving sessions.
- Heavy-Duty Steel Drive Cups — The substantial steel construction of the drive cups absorbs and distributes stress evenly, preventing weak points and ensuring consistent performance across countless charging cycles and driving hours.
- 96mm Length Specification — This precise 96mm shaft length is specifically engineered for Traxxas UDR compatibility, ensuring perfect fitment and optimal driveline geometry for your short course truck platform.
- Shaft Only Configuration — As a shaft-only component, this allows for quick replacement of just the driveshaft without unnecessary re-purchasing of complete driveline assemblies, saving you money on your RC car UK hobby budget.
Technical Performance
This Traxxas steel constant-velocity driveshaft is engineered to the exacting standards Traxxas applies to all their chassis spares and drivetrain components. The steel material selection provides superior strength compared to aluminium alternatives, allowing the shaft to absorb and transmit the tremendous torque output of modern brushless motors without flex or failure. The black-oxide coating isn't merely cosmetic—it's a functional protection layer that resists rust and corrosion, critical for maintaining structural integrity when your RC vehicle encounters wet terrain or salt-laden environments common in the UK. The 96mm length is precisely calculated to work with the specific suspension geometry and wheelbase of compatible Traxxas UDR models, ensuring optimal driveline angles that prevent binding and maximise efficiency. The constant-velocity joint design means power is delivered smoothly to the wheels regardless of suspension position, eliminating the jerky power delivery and driveline shock you'd experience with inferior driveshaft designs. The splined telescoping mechanism allows the shaft to expand and contract as your suspension compresses over bumps and terrain changes, eliminating the need to artificially limit suspension travel—a design innovation that sets Traxxas apart from competitors. For brushless RC applications where motor power has increased dramatically over the years, this steel CV driveshaft provides the torque handling capacity and reliability demanded by serious enthusiasts pushing their vehicles to the absolute limit.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What vehicles is the Traxxas TRX8550 driveshaft compatible with? — This 96mm steel CV driveshaft is designed specifically for the Traxxas UDR Unlimited Desert Racer Pro-Scale 4WD RTR short course truck models, including both the Fox Racing (TRX85086-4-FOX1) and Rigid Industries (TRX85086-4-RGD1) variants. It fits V.1 narrow Maxx models but does not fit models with WideMaxx suspension installed, so check your specific truck variant before ordering.
- Why would I need to replace my driveshaft? — Driveshafts wear over time due to the intense forces they transmit from your brushless motor to the wheels. Regular bashing or racing will eventually lead to bearing wear, play developing in the joints, or damage from impacts. Replacing the shaft alone rather than the entire driveline assembly saves money whilst restoring your truck's performance and reliability.
- What's the advantage of steel construction over aluminium driveshafts? — Steel provides superior strength and torque handling capacity compared to aluminium, making it the ideal choice for high-power brushless applications. Whilst slightly heavier, the added durability and reliability make steel the preferred material for serious RC enthusiasts who demand maximum longevity from their chassis spares.
- Is the constant-velocity design really necessary? — Yes—the CV design is crucial for smooth, efficient power delivery across the full range of suspension movement. Without CV joints, your driveshaft would bind and slip as your suspension compresses, causing jerky acceleration and potential loss of traction. CV technology keeps power flowing smoothly regardless of suspension position.
- What do the sealed bearings protect against? — The rubber-sealed bearings keep out dirt, dust, water, and other contaminants that would otherwise cause the bearings to wear rapidly and the drive pins to seize. This is especially important for UK drivers who frequently encounter wet, muddy, or dusty terrain.
- Do I need to do anything special to install this driveshaft? — Installation requires compatibility with 8654-series 17mm splined wheel hubs and 7758-series 17mm wheel nuts. As long as your truck is equipped with these components (standard on compatible UDR models), installation is straightforward and can be completed with basic RC tools.
- How long will this driveshaft last? — Longevity depends on driving style, terrain, and maintenance. The steel construction and sealed bearings significantly extend lifespan compared to inferior alternatives. Regular users can expect hundreds of charging cycles before wear becomes noticeable, making this an excellent value spare part investment.
