Overview

The Traxxas Gear, 27-T pinion (machined, hardened steel) (1.0 metric pitch) (fits 5mm shaft) / set screw TRX6480R is an essential performance tuning component for RC enthusiasts across the UK looking to optimise their Traxxas models. This precision-engineered pinion gear is crafted from hardened steel using a machining process that ensures durability and reliability in demanding racing and bashing conditions. Whether you're running a high-performance brushless RC car, 4WD short course truck, or any Traxxas model with a 5mm motor shaft, this 27-tooth pinion gear gives you the flexibility to fine-tune your vehicle's acceleration and top speed characteristics.

For both seasoned competitors and weekend RC car enthusiasts in the UK, understanding gear ratios is key to maximising performance. The Traxxas pinion gear range allows you to adjust the balance between raw acceleration and maximum velocity, making it an indispensable upgrade for anyone serious about getting the most from their RC model. The 27-tooth configuration provides an excellent all-round ratio that works across a variety of running conditions, from tight indoor tracks to open outdoor bashing courses. If you're looking to swap from a higher or lower tooth count, this pinion gear lets you experiment and discover the perfect setup for your specific needs.

Traxxas has built a reputation for manufacturing components that meet the exacting standards demanded by the RC hobby, and this machined steel pinion gear is no exception. The inclusion of a set screw means you can secure the gear firmly to your 5mm motor shaft with confidence, knowing it will stay in place during high-speed runs and aggressive cornering. This is the kind of quality component that serious RC car UK owners rely on for consistent, dependable performance.

Key Features

  • 27-Tooth Configuration — The 27-tooth count strikes an ideal balance between acceleration and top speed, making this pinion gear suitable for a wide range of running conditions and driving styles across different track and terrain types.
  • Machined Hardened Steel Construction — Every tooth is precision-machined from hardened steel, which means exceptional durability, resistance to stripping, and a long service life even under intense racing or bashing conditions that would wear out softer materials quickly.
  • 1.0 Metric Pitch (Mod 1) — This industry-standard metric pitch ensures compatibility with a wide range of Traxxas spur gears and drivetrain components, allowing you to build custom gear ratios by pairing different pinion and spur gear combinations for your specific performance goals.
  • 5mm Shaft Bore — Designed to fit standard 5mm motor shafts found on most Traxxas brushless and brushed motors, ensuring a secure and reliable fit without modifications or adapter sleeves.
  • Set Screw Included — The provided set screw allows you to lock the pinion gear firmly onto your motor shaft, preventing slippage during acceleration, deceleration, or hard cornering and ensuring consistent drivetrain engagement throughout your run.
  • Performance Tuning Flexibility — By simply swapping pinion gears of different tooth counts, you can completely transform your vehicle's performance characteristics without expensive upgrades, making this one of the most cost-effective tuning modifications available to RC enthusiasts.
  • Genuine Traxxas Component — As an official Traxxas part, this pinion gear is engineered to work seamlessly with genuine Traxxas spur gears and the electrical systems in your model, ensuring optimal meshing, power delivery, and longevity.

Technical Performance

The Traxxas 27-T pinion gear represents a significant step up in performance tuning capability for any RC model enthusiast. Machined from hardened steel using precision manufacturing techniques, this component delivers exceptional strength and consistency compared to cheaper moulded alternatives. The 1.0 metric pitch specification means that every tooth has been engineered to mesh perfectly with compatible Traxxas spur gears, resulting in smooth power delivery and minimal energy loss through the drivetrain. This is particularly important for brushless RC cars, where high-power motors demand precision components that can handle the torque and speed without flex or degradation. The 5mm shaft bore is the industry standard for most Traxxas brushless and brushed motors, including those found in the popular Maxx Slash 1/8 4WD 6S Brushless Short Course Truck series and many other models in the Traxxas catalogue. The set screw mechanism ensures a positive lock that prevents the gear from slipping on the motor shaft even under extreme acceleration or during high-grip track conditions. By selecting the 27-tooth configuration, you're choosing a gear ratio that delivers excellent all-around performance—neither aggressively biased towards raw speed nor excessively geared for launch acceleration. This makes it an ideal choice for general purpose running across multiple scenarios, though experienced tuners can experiment with higher tooth counts (like the 20-T) to increase acceleration, or lower counts to unlock higher maximum velocity. The engineering quality of Traxxas components means consistent, predictable performance run after run.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Which Traxxas models is the 27-T pinion gear compatible with? — This pinion gear is designed for any Traxxas model with a 5mm motor shaft and 1.0 metric pitch compatibility. Confirmed compatible models include all variants of the Traxxas Maxx Slash 1/8 4WD 6S Brushless Short Course Truck (Rock N Roll, Blue, Red, and Green versions). Consult your owner's manual for your specific model to confirm recommended gearing options and whether this tooth count is suitable for your vehicle.
  • How do I change the gear ratio on my Traxxas RC car? — Changing your gear ratio is straightforward: remove the set screw from the current pinion gear using an appropriate hex driver, slide the old gear off your motor shaft, position the new 27-T gear onto the shaft, and secure it with the supplied set screw tightened firmly. Always ensure the pinion and spur gears are properly meshed before running your model, and consult your manual for correct mesh gap specifications.
  • What difference will switching to a 27-T pinion make compared to other tooth counts? — The 27-tooth count represents a balanced mid-range ratio. Compared to the 20-T pinion gear, the 27-T will provide slightly less maximum top speed but better acceleration and torque delivery. If you switch to an even higher tooth count, acceleration improves further while top speed decreases. Conversely, lower tooth counts favour higher speeds at the cost of reduced acceleration. Choose based on your typical running environment: tighter tracks with lots of cornering benefit from more acceleration, while open courses where you can maintain high speeds favour lower tooth counts.
  • Is this machined steel gear better than moulded plastic alternatives? — Absolutely. Machined hardened steel provides superior strength, durability, and longevity compared to plastic gears. Steel gears resist stripping far better under load, maintain precise tooth profiles longer, and are less prone to wear. For serious RC enthusiasts and anyone running high-power brushless systems, a machined steel pinion is a worthwhile investment that will outlast multiple plastic alternatives.
  • Do I need any special tools to fit this pinion gear? — You'll need a hex driver that fits the set screw (typically 2.5mm or 3mm, depending on your motor configuration). Traxxas Speed Bit hex drivers are ideal for this purpose. No other special tools are required—installation is a straightforward five-minute job suitable for beginners and experienced builders alike.
  • Will this pinion gear work with my brushless motor? — Yes, the 27-T pinion gear is fully compatible with Traxxas brushless motors featuring 5mm shafts. The hardened steel construction is actually ideal for brushless setups, which deliver higher power outputs than brushed alternatives and therefore place greater demands on drivetrain components. The machined precision ensures smooth meshing and efficient power transfer from your brushless ESC and motor to the wheels.
  • What is metric pitch and why does it matter? — Metric pitch (Mod 1 in this case) is a standardised tooth profile measurement used in gear manufacturing. Mod 1 means the gears are engineered to work with other Mod 1 components—specifically, Traxxas spur gears marked with the same pitch specification. Using mismatched pitches results in poor meshing, noise, inefficiency, and accelerated wear. Always ensure your pinion and spur gears share the same pitch specification.
